Just like Stanton did. Boras doesn't do extensions. They have no guarantees that they'd even re-sign him.

If you think the Yankees are making this trade without supreme confidence he’s part of their long term future… you’re smoking that good s***.

Well, 28, which is not old as pitchers go. 2 yrs control I believe and making $ 1.3 M. He sure did look like a #2, #3 for the most part this year.

I dunno, I just find 'young controllable SP2-3' to be a bit aggressive for a guy entering his age-29 season with two remaining years of team control and only 9 starts last year and 0 the year before. Logan Gilbert and Kyle Bradish are young, controllable SP2s. King is a talented arm that SD will hope to squeeze 40 starts out of before his arm falls off.

Grisham and King might have similar values so it comes down to Thorpe for Soto....

Hmm I can see what you're saying but I think you could also frame it like this:

Higashioka, Vazquez and Brito have a similar value to Grisham. Then it comes down to King and Thorpe for Soto.

Higashioka and Grisham are actually similar players. Very good defensive players at premium positions with serviceable bats relative to their position. Higa only has 1 year of control left and Grisham has 2. But the Padres get a couple of young depth arms to make up that difference.

Then the Padres are getting a mid-rotation starter (he's volatile but I think most playoff contenders would have a hard time finding a #3 or #4 pitcher better than him?) who is pretty cost controlled for two years. They also are getting a legit prospect who also adds to the depth this year. Yankees are getting a star player but one who is going to make 33 million bucks this year.

On a strictly WAR per dollar basis the Padres likely come out ahead. They need to cut costs and fill out the roster with depth which is what they need and they added a legit prospect in doing so. But the Yankees get a star player (at a star's salary) which is something they need and these 5 WAR types provide some "hidden" extra juice in that they provide all that WAR from just one roster spot.

Pretty good trade for both sides given their goals.

Vasquez has a little upside. The other 2 seem like orgfiller. Like Higashioka kills LHP that's great but how often will they play him over Campusano

Grisham is really not that bad. Pretty stable 2 win player with room for more IMO

Only fair that we take Ohtani from them since they're taking Cimber lol

I can see the Yankees dropping their "no Facial Hair" policy before spring

If I recall correctly the Blue Jays essentially ended the Angels season when Manoah plunked Taylor Ward in the face so the Jays owed them a solid and let them have Cimber for a song.

Great move for the 2024 season for the Yankees... we'll see beyond that if it's still great or a disaster.

Regardless, our life has just gotten harder for next season. Seeing Soto and Judge back to back isn't fair.

Eduardo Rodriguez 80/4 with DBacks

That's a really good signing. They needed the rotation depth.

I don't think it's really bad for NY. Vasquez and Brito probably suck and Higashioka is a backup C in his last year of team control. Spare parts.

It's two years of King + Thorpe for Soto.

And Grisham, pretty nice deal both ways. Toronto could've beat that easily, but not sure I'd like the price. :P

That's how I see it, it would've cost Manoah and RT, plus a couple Van Eyk's.

How could we beat that easily..? I assume your assuming they value Manoah over King and RT much more than Thorpe??

I don't think that is the case...

Soto is the type of guy you keep Moreno for... not to trade him for Varsho's scrubby ass.

I'm sure there were a bunch of the same people talking about how great of a trade that was when most thought it was ridiculous right away lol.

Yes.

I'm glad Ed-Rod worked his way back to relevance again, that's a sweet deal for both sides.

Don’t agree with you on this one Sir.

King is a controllable young #2-#3 SP and Grisham is a $4.5 million defensive replacement 4th OF at the moment. Thorpe close enough to Tiedemann so basically like us giving up Berrios, RT plus, plus..

Oh my...

Does it really matter? lol

If the Jay's had given up similar value in prospects etc to make that deal I wouldn't be happy. Sucks the Yanks have.him for a year but that is a price I'm glad the Jay's didn't pay.

I agree... I'm just more upset that he ended up in our division for the year and possibly longer. Soto/Judge will be the scariest 1-2 combo in the league unless Ohtani goes back to Trout.
