Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Yankees aren’t getting anybody for one year. He will be cemented there for the next decade punishing the division. That might also work out well for the Jays. They'd already be in luxury tax territory until 2030 with just 5 guys (Judge, Cole, Rodon, Soto, Stanton).
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Mike Elias is lucky. Offseason work done until he signs Chris Flexen to a MiLB deal in February.

Yankees, Padres Nearing Juan Soto Deal By Steve Adams | December 6, 2023 at 2:42pm CDT 2:42pm: The two sides are still sorting out minor details and reviewing medical information, but Heyman tweets that a deal is expected to be finalized sooner than later. Soto and Grisham are both expected to go to the Yankees.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 f*** I hate the yankees. As if Judge pushing our s*** in multiple times per year wasn't enough, now we get him stacked with a prime Soto??
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Grisham is a solid get as 2nd piece. He's not too much different than Varsho and could be a guy who does well with the short porch. Not really sure why the Yankees got Verdugo though, Grisham is a better fit in CF.

Probably counting on Stanton spending a lot of time on the IL. Their most common configuration will probably Soto in LF, Grisham in CF, Verdugo in RF, Judge DH.

Yeah the starting lineup is bad defensively (stay because of the Verdugo acquisition) but over the course of the season there will be plenty of ABs for the 4 of them and Grisham will get plenty of time in CF.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Imagine trying to spin that the Yankees getting Soto for the longterm is a bad thing for them while blowing your load waiting on Ohtani lol. Soto being off the board before Ohtani makes his decision is our worst case scenario.

He's actually pretty good defensively. Soto in that huge LF isn't a great fit defensively either.

If anything I would think Soto DH's a lot more than Judge unless they're babying him in an attempt to keep him relatively healthy for a full season.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I wonder if the rumours of the Jays shopping Varsho was because the Jays were thinking about a plan of Soto and Grisham. Grisham could have replaced him in CF without much of a dropoff.

Unless Judge or Soto want to learn 1B.

Who knows if he finds a fountain of youth. Its not like you're going to gain anything from buying him out now than waiting for it later.

Orioles 108 wins, Rays 99 wins Jays 84 wins (sign Teo back and combined with Varsho they hit .220 with 39 homers) Ohtani to Dodgers Jays Bo/Vlad years = 0 playoff wins and so much sadness, but so much joy for the Yankee fans... they do not every have more than 1 down season.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Judge? If anything I would think Soto DH's a lot more than Judge unless they're babying him in an attempt to keep him relatively healthy for a full season. Just assuming they start giving him more and more days at DH with his size and injury history. He's clearly a better OF than Soto, but Soto is still healthy enough to play there every day and those days might be over for Judge.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Padres did pretty damn well man. They got Soto for 1.5 years and while it didn't workout, they're getting back a lot of what they gave in the first place. Respect them for taking the swing.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I don't think it's really bad for NY. Vasquez and Brito probably suck and Higashioka is a backup C in his last year of team control. Spare parts. It's two years of King + Thorpe for Soto.

I still think you bring him to ST and then evaluate then. Never know what injuries will happen either.

They have to sign him to a long term extension first which is far from a given.

Grisham could have replaced him in CF without much of a dropoff. Can't say I particularly agree with this. Up to this point of his career Varsho has been a 4 win center fielder in his time spent there (basically a full season worth of plate appearances). Bluejays Nation had a recent article outlining how Varsho would have been a 4 win player in 2023 if he'd spent all of his time in center field as well (based on the assumption that his defensive metric rates would have held up over a full season).
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 That's a pretty meh return for SD but I guess we would have had to give up Tiedemann to beat it. Penciling in King as a good SP is way too precarious for me and he only has 2 years anyway. Thorpe is nice though. But like I said, they would have asked for Tiedemann They should have got Warren as a 3rd piece at least. Then again the Red Sox got nothing for Betts.

A defensive OF of Soto and 110-120 games of Springer with no Varsho and no KK would be a pretty horrible defensive downgrade unless they got Bellinger too or something

Seems they placed a big premium on getting volume MLB-ready arms, even though two of them aren't particularly good. I bet they asked for Tiedemann + Manoah
