BTS Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 The Phillies have no organizational depth at all. Classic Dombrowski. If the Rockies were a real team they’d be trying to move CJ Cron to them, but they aren’t so they won’t.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Darick Hall is about to break out. So much so that the Phillies will let Hoskins walk this offseason.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Problem is they don't really have other decent options for 3B (Bohm) or OF (Castellanos). Their top MLB ready prospect is a CF, Johan Rojas. He is a light hitting player with elite speed/defense. If he slides into the OF it's probably the left fielder who gets bumped (I guess that's Jake Cave or a platoon?). Schwarber can probably play 1B but he has surprisingly few MLB games there. Darick Hall probably sucks but showed some power and will get a shot. If Hall doesn't work out I wonder if we see Realmuto go to first more frequently and Rafael Marchan on the roster. They could cycle through like 5 different 1B options this year, lol. Oh yes - depth is a terrible issue for the Phillies. Timing sucks too as there were some cheap options they could have explored earlier in the offseason (Edwin Ríos, Dom Smith, Luke Voit, etc.). Voit's on a minor league deal, so maybe he ends up in Philly. They are certainly hoping to find someone with a dead cat bounce. I see nobody picked up Miguel Sano this offseason - maybe Phillies give him a chance now.

The 1B with the 110 wRC+ in AAA the last two years as a 25/26 year old? Phillies are going to need more than that from 1B if they want to make the playoffs.

He and Schwarber are gonna be battling for the NL HR title this year.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Rogers has the shadiest accounting in the league lol. No way the Jays lost money I have to defend Rogers even if I don't want to. They likely have the LEAST shady accounting in the league, given that they are a publicly traded company. That being said, the Jays are 100% being used as a loss leader, but honestly it would be difficult to quantify exactly how much of a benefit the team is to their other segments. As a guy who spent several years in corporate finance in telecom, I know a 1% change in input variables can change an outcome by $10's of millions. And those impact variables are either educated guesses or taken from some co-worker "expert" who is some 55 year old dude who has worked for the company for 25+ years and cares way more about his pension than anything he's doing (not saying that's the wrong attitude, that's the RIGHT attitude actually - but not conducive to getting accurate numbers). If all teams were a publicly traded company where the franchise value is proxy for the market cap, I'm definitely buying the A's.

It would be interesting to see how much the Rogers TV section of the company actually pays the Jays section of the company for their broadcasting rights. It's difficult to imagine that it's fair market value given the Jays "local" TV market is probably the biggest in MLB by a huge margin. I mean it's not like any other broadcaster even gets the chance to bid on their broadcast rights either.

The_DH Verified Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 It's not shady accounting, it's just cost-allocation and it's very legal to do. The shadiest accounting is done by the teams with salary caps. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to mess around with those.

I don’t think anyone is thinking creative accounting means anyone should be locked up or something. It’s just simply rolling eyes that they “lost money” If any of us are super rich, we’re going to want our CPA to exploit any loophole there is
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Some people say to only look at the stock value to see if they lose money. I say they didn't.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 The # thing would be look at their tv deal and see how much sense it made. I’d assume it’s probably undervalued
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Not to mention I’m sure they can just give any crazy figure on stadium depreciation too. Can always find someone to jack it up

If Rogers didn't have the Jays, The 800 Sportsnet channels would be airing darts, billiards and poker all day. The Jays provide Toronto's largest billboard to Rogers as well. A lot of the major benefits that the Jays bring to Rogers aren't actually shown on a balance sheet.

Not on the Jays balance sheet anyways, but i think Dick knows that given his statements about them being a loss leader. It's probably the most brilliant thing Rogers has done in the last 30 years.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Keston Hiura won't make the Brewers. I'm not sure I'd pay him 2 million, but if he gets released the he'd be a really nice fit. An experienced right handed bat that can PH for Belt or Kiermaier is exactly what we need for our last bench spit.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 1000 PAs of virtually all bench role time isnt exactly what I'd call "experienced" You aren't going to find many players with 4 full years of experience, including playoff at-bats, at this point in the season. What are your suggestions?

What are your suggestions? In house options are fine for now. Hiura isnt so much better than Lopez with the bat that it would move the needle in any meaningful way, not to mention a pretty big downgrade with defensive utility Something to monitor though for sure. RH power off the bench wouldn't be a bad thing to have.

So really he’d be PH for like Espinal or Merrifield who started against a lefty. Career splits: vs RHP: 122 wRC+ vs LHP: 65 wRC+ He’s a lefty platoon masher in a right hander’s body.
