Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Wow... a pitcher saying this is awkward. lol I'd love to know how many successful pickoffs there are after a 2nd attempt. I suspect it's a VERY low amount (especially from RHP). It feels like 80% of pick off attempts are a waste of time. They are just token throws over to let the runner know you can see him (like he'd forgotten) and/or is a stall tactic for the pitcher to re-group or recover before the next pitch. I certainly know that sometimes pitchers start off with their "C" move to 1st and are trying to setup that runner - I just don't think that happens enough to matter. Maybe this was more relevant back in the early 2000's when stealing was more common? Recently it just seems there are way too many pickoff attempts when everyone knows that runner isn't going anywhere. Maybe it will become more relevant again now with the larger bases? I don't know - but I can do away with pickoff throws. I never had a great move and didn't throw over often when I pitched, so maybe that's skewing my view.

A pickoff move is more an attempt to reduce the runner's jump, IMO. And yes, more relevant in the days of Raines and Henderson. I wonder if we will see someone hit 50 SB this season.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 50 is possible for someone based on MiLB data people are expecting a 2012 SB environment in 2022 the league leader had 41 steals and only six guys had 30+ in 2012 the league leader had 49 steals and twenty one guys had 30+ Expect the bigger percentage bumps to come from guys with "okay" speed as their success rates go from borderline to green light ranges. The guys with top end speed might see a smaller increase in percentage terms... they could already make it almost every time if they don't stub a toe or fall down.

There was a 59 and a 60 that year.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 2014-17 Billy Hamilton with these rules would have been fun to watch. Prime Jarrod Dyson too. Not sure if there are many players like that in the league currently. I have no idea who the Jays internally view as the best option for the last bench spot, but curious to see if someone like Wynton Bernard with elite sprint speed gets a much longer look. A late inning guy like him will have value, especially with guys like Belt, Kirk, etc, potentially clogging up bases late in games.

Corbin Carroll maybe. 80 grade speed, and 100 percentile sprint speed. 33 SB with 4 CS last year. Hopefully the D-back let him loose. Edited March 2, 2023 by The Cats Ass

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Whit Merrifield 60 SB season incoming Hmm interesting. That would tie him with Dave Collins as the team's single season SB leader. I wonder if any other team has two white guys battling it out for the franchise stolen base record? Not only was Dave Collins a white guy, he was a white guy with glasses. Imagine Tom Henke running the basepaths alongside Vince Coleman and Willie Wilson. That was the Jays in the mid-80's.

Berrios, Espinal, Vlad, Garcia and Kirk are all we have left. Lopez might need to make the bench just to help offset the whiteness. Oh and Kikuchi... does he count?

And Vlad comes from money. Whitest team since the pre-Jim Rice Red Sox.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 For pointing out racism the Jays blatant whitewashing of the roster? Yes. The Toronto Blue Jays hired me as a social media PR rep to try and sweep this under the rug as much as possible.
