connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 LOL What a joke Pretty much every NFL or NBA game they have to reset the game clock. I’m sure they’ll make all the changes that make sense

While I accept the idea of a pitch clock, putting more subjectivity into the umpires hands will only lead to never ending controversy.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 Only thing is pitchers will do this all the time if this is all they have to do to restart the clock There are multiple instances per game where a new ball will be necessary. There's no arguing that point. Who decides when those times are? Will they inspect the ball if the manager protests?

Why not just make them have to be in the box with 8 seconds left? Why does it matter where their focus is? Let the pitcher throw the pitch from second 9 to 15. If the pitch comes and the batter is not ready then that's on them. Some of these umps are going to make terrible judgement calls based off of that. They don't give a s*** what a catcher is doing as long as he's in the box so why care about how ready a hitter is?

I can picture some health and safety concerns being raised if a pitcher were to throw when then the batter is not ready.

MLB and the Umpires have proven time and time again that they’re extremely incompetent

philly30 Verified Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Maybe a rule where in the ninth inning and extras no pitch clock so the games can't end on a violation, that would be horrible a playoff game ending like that

That ruins the playoff experience for everyone.

That may be the case for a couple of hitters and pitchers, but I'm willing to watch an extra 10 minutes of playoff baseball if it means that we get a real baseball game and not some controversial win on a technicality like the superbowl and countless other big games.

Even today i didn’t even notice Agreed, although if the pitch clock isn't visible to the TV audience, then I don't even think it will take until June for people not to notice, it might be sometime in April. People in general dislike change, but they'll get used to it. I bring this up a lot, but look at the NBA in the early 2000's and compare it to today. It's like a different game. The NBA had to make rule changes because fans were tuning out of the games that ended with a 79-72 score. Scoring might be a bit absurd today but whatever, it's a more appealing product. In a few years all of these MLB rule changes will be considered normal and no one will long for the days of 4.5 hour games that had 45 seconds of players scratching their balls in between every pitch.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Nobody wants to watch a game end on time clock violations. Extend or eliminate time from the 7th inning on where the highest leverage typically takes place
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 if the rule is not the same at all times in the game it might actually lead to more infractions, as players won't be as firmly conditioned you might see a batter screw up during a high leverage AB in the 6th inning that "feels" like it's late you'll probably almost never see these calls late in games. the players will be alert and quick, to avoid disaster.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 In October I wanna see the cat and mouse between Romano and Judge or Hader and Freeman. I like the change but would still tinker with it
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Just make the clock reviewable, so if there's a technical glitch, like we saw the other day (with the clock not restarting) it can be caught and corrected. If you start messing around with the rule (the clock only matters sometimes) then it loses credibility. Everyone knows what the rules are. If you break them, you get penalized. The only time I would have an issue is a technical issue with said clock.

I like the change but would still tinker with it Can you elaborate? You want to see Judge and Freeman have more time to scratch their balls or "think" about what's coming? Or you want to see Romano or Hader have more time to rub down the ball and 'recover' between pitches? Or you just want to see players step off or step out to throw off timing? I will agree that in tight situations, the time between pitches helps build the suspense - is that what you mean?

I enjoy this part of the game especially in a big game situation. Maybe it’ll still feel the same. Hopefully it will.

Maybe it’ll still feel the same. Hopefully it will. I mean - didn't we always hear about how awesome it was to watch Greg Maddux, Mark Buehrle and Doc pitch? Didn't people love how much more pace the game had because these guys would just get it and throw it and you could have games complete in just over 2 hours? I know we're talking about 3 great pitchers, but I think that's the type of pace we're hoping to get. It keeps the defense on their toes more too. Maybe it's easier to put it this way. I never heard someone complain that the games those guys started "went too fast". I certainly hear LOTS of people complain when the Yankee/Red Sox playoff games go 4+ hours (I complained about those also) and while I know they increase the commercials and such in those games - they still f***ing took forever. Is that the type of game you'd rather see? I sure don't. I fully expect once players adjust, it will be a huge positive for baseball.

It was Spring trainning and the game was tied, had that been the regular season the game would still go to extra innings. Now, had the violation been on the pitcher... sure the game could have ended. But it could end on a balk already, so... just dont f***ing balk and there's no problem. I swear people just love to rage about the dumbest s*** at any opportunity

Don't we all remember the people who were losing their minds when we eliminated take out slides at 2nd base? Did they all quit watching baseball? I don't hear anyone talk about that rule change anymore - it all died within a couple of months (except for the s*** at home plate, which I think they could fix really easily - can't ever block any bag - problem solved).
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 I share the sentiment that I don't want to see a game end on a stupid technicality, even if the pitch clock is 90% positives right now. Instead of extensions and similar ideas, maybe something in the vein of fouls to give like in the NBA. For the first 7 innings, the violation comes with a penalty. After the 7th, you have three "violations to give". If your team messed up four times, you kind of deserve to lose the game on a technicality.
