gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 We hold all the cards and this is what Ross did?
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 In his best year he puts up a .745 OPS. Not a big fan right now. Especially if also gave up Lourdes You trade your best catching prospect for a 108WRC hitter lol. And both guys you traded project for higher.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 Varsho had 4.6 WAR in 2022 Played at the same pace in 2021 Destroyed AA at 22 without striking out much They get his four prime seasons Perfect roster fit. Left handed CF who is also the emergency catcher so you can DH Kirk all the time. Could be more upside I don’t think it’s set in stone that he will have whiff issues like in his short career so far
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Of all the Outfielders discussed this off-season Daulton Varsho was probably near the bottom of the list. Sure left-handed power but no ability to get on base. Expect a lot of wild swings and frustrating at-bats. Kinda shocked he cost that much. Tough to trade an Athletic Catcher with that much upside with the bat and keeping a fat Kirk. Diamondbacks did very well here.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Ross Atkins is a f***ing moron.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 I'd love to see Varsho trim that K rate a bit and take a few more walks, but there's nothing really to hate in his batted ball metrics. Jays now have 3 CFs in the OF with Merrifield/Biggio as the defacto backups when they're not playing the infield. There's some promise that he has an above average barrell rate, but the plate discipline....needs a lot of work.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 I'm not even really sure Toronto considers Gurriel a loss. Springer/Varsho/Kiermaier/Merrifield is clearly their OF rotation and there's a ton of positional flexibility there. 5.4M for Gurriel isn't a good fit.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Terminator was wrong That is all
MON4NHLTOR4MLB Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Varsho sucks but so does this front office. Overpay and panic deal because they had to react to Conforto going elsewhere. If they do nothing else, this has been a disaster offseason
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Really like the player, unique and very useful. The price is giving me pause. Is this the best player you can get for a top 10 prospect (+) ?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Panic move? Definitely seems like a deal that could’ve been made already. Seems like go home with the fat chick but whatever, deal is done.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 RUN PREVENTION is our focus apparently
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 Gurriel is worth basically nothing. Horrendous defender in left and not an impact bat despite teasing it at time. I think his swing is too mechanical / rigid or something.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Maaannn... you cant trade Moreno + Gurriel without getting a no doubt Superstar in return. This is a total panic move in an attempt to get a Left Handed OFer.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 I would have been happier with the trade if it was Kirk instead of Moreno. I just can’t see Kirk holding up.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 RUN PREVENTION is our focus apparently Then why the hell is Bo still our starting SS? Dude blows defensively and plays a super premium position.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 RUN PREVENTION is our focus apparently So how does Moreno not fit that narrative?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 So probably: RHP Springer LF Kiermaier CF Varsho RF Kirk/Jansen C LHP Springer LF Varsho CF Merrifield RF Kirk/Jansen C With Varsho the 3rd C Doesn’t corner OF make Varsho less valuable?
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Varsho had 4.6 WAR in 2022 Played at the same pace in 2021 Destroyed AA at 22 without striking out much They get his four prime seasons Perfect roster fit. Left handed CF who is also the emergency catcher so you can DH Kirk all the time. Could be more upside I don’t think it’s set in stone that he will have whiff issues like in his short career so far Varsho is underrated here. Every year teams give like 300+ PA to washed geezers like Kurt Suzuki and Yan Gomes, because nobody has 3 competent catchers. Toronto's 3rd catcher is an above average defensive CF with plus speed and 30-HR power from the left side. The flexibility is beautiful.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Really like the player, unique and very useful. The price is giving me pause. Is this the best player you can get for a top 10 prospect (+) ? This is almost the opposite of a typical Atkins deal: In a vacuum, it's a really steep price to pay for Varsho. But in the context of the lineup and defense, it makes some more sense. The Jays have almost an elite defensive lineup aside from SS.
lovemyjays Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Gurriel is worth basically nothing. Horrendous defender in left and not an impact bat despite teasing it at time. I think his swing is too mechanical / rigid or something. This seems like a copium type comment. Not an impact bat? His numbers don't lie. Gurri was a very good hitter. Durability was his biggest concern. He was still young and was improving.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 Varsho 7.1 WAR is basically 1.66 seasons 4.4 per season If Arizona wasn’t trading Corbin Carroll then there may not have been a better CF trade target out there
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 So how does Moreno not fit that narrative? Varsho has shown to be an excellent defensive OF, Moreno hasn't.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 I would have been happier with the trade if it was Kirk instead of Moreno. I just can’t see Kirk holding up. I would have been fine with Jansen. I just think there's way too much upside with Moreno. He can easily outwar Varsho next year and is younger. So I am trying to figure it out, they are a better team with Moreno + Gurriel than with Varsho. This is a great trade for Arizona though, sold high on Varsho.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 He was still young and was improving. lol, he's 29
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Maaannn... you cant Moreno + Gurriel without getting a no doubt Superstar in return. This is a total panic move in an attempt to get a Left Handed OFer. Lol where do people get this idea that Gurriel has considerable value?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Outfield defense is insane now after being a clown show.
lovemyjays Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 lol, he's 29 Look no further than his brother - Yuli.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Varsho has shown to be an excellent defensive OF, Moreno hasn't. You have him for a corner spot, could have just signed Conforto or get a better return than Varsho back.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 This seems like a copium type comment. Not an impact bat? His numbers don't lie. Gurri was a very good hitter. Durability was his biggest concern. He was still young and was improving. Is it good when your left fielder hits five homers? He’s a good hitter but he’s never been worth even two wins because the defense is so bad, he’s slow, and he’s never put it all together with the stick. He’s worth a few million in surplus value at the most so he doesn’t move the needle much in this trade.
