Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 Elon is proof one can be smart in one area, and utterly stupid in another. He certainly was smart at being born into wealth and using that wealth to buy things that smart people built...

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 Have to be the least sexiest 20 million dollar a year Free Agent signing. But if we can give us 8-9 WAR over the next 3 years I would be thrilled. Consistently good is all my expectations are.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 If Berrios bounces back to 3-4 WAR and they somehow miraculously unlock Kikuchi we should have a pretty damn good rotation. Everybody needs to stay healthy too I guess, because the depth is still not very good, or at least not very proven. White/Zulueta/Tiedemann does have potential to be solid depth though.

I think the depth is fine. You've also got Bowden Francis who might be a decent #5 or swingman. And maybe Ryu in the second half. Juenger perhaps as a 3 inning guy? Maybe Pearson for the same role. Sem Robberse will be in AA/AAA so could come up. Seems like a better situation than last year but I dunno.

Well, except for Ryu but he'd still be probably the biggest question mark out of all of them at this point.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 just reading an article on The Athletic and guess who had the #1 rated curveball in baseball last year? Chris Bassitt Curveball @ 74 MPH 178.4 When faced with the fact that this was his best pitch by Stuff+, at the time, Chris Bassitt didn’t think that necessarily meant he should throw it more. “If I throw it more, then they’ll sit on it,” he said when we spoke about it in 2021. Well, Bassitt threw it twice as often in 2022 than he did in 2021, and was using it nearly a fifth of the time by the end of the season. His whiff rate went down, yes, but his slugging percentage also went down, all the way to .205 last season. He only gave up three doubles on 421 curves thrown — sounds like a pretty good pitch even if it reads as a lollipop on the GIF machine. If you’re still skeptical, you have a right to be. An experimental newer version of Stuff+, which has been trained on more recent data, and has a slightly different approach to defining the primary fastball, has Bassitt’s curve as above-average but not elite.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 25, 2022 Posted December 25, 2022 Ok so I was just reading about the International Free agency signing period starting on Jan 15/23 and Bassitt's signing wont affect that. It will be Jan '24 that it will affect I believe. Also, I didn't realise that when a team forfeits cash because they signed a player, That allowance is then redistributed to the other clubs. So when Jays signed Bassitt every teams spending allowance goes up $17,000 + https://www.mlb.com/news/the-top-international-prospects-for-2022-23 International signing rules, spending These are the international bonus pools for the 2022-23 signing period: Clubs that received a Competitive Balance Pick in Round B of the Draft (Athletics, Brewers, Mariners, Marlins, Rays, Reds, Tigers and Twins) received a pool of $6,366,900 while clubs with a Competitive Balance Pick in Round A (D-backs, Guardians, Orioles, Padres, Pirates, Rockies and Royals) received $5,825,500. The base signing pool for the Astros, Blue Jays, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Giants, Mets, Nationals, White Sox and Yankees is $5,284,000. The Angels, Phillies and Red Sox each forfeited $500,000 from their pools for signing players who had rejected qualifying offers -- Noah Syndergaard, Nick Castellanos and Trevor Story, respectively -- last offseason, so each has a pool of $4,644,000 . The Dodgers and Rangers each forfeited $1,000,000 from their pools for signing players who had rejected qualifying offers to lower their pool to $4,144,000. The Dodgers surpassed the luxury tax threshold the previous season and had to forfeit $1,000,000 for Freddie Freeman. The Rangers forfeit $500,000 each for Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. The forfeited monies are redistributed to the other clubs. Teams will be allowed to trade international bonus slots during this signing period starting Jan. 15. There are guidelines for signing prospects. An international player is eligible to sign with a Major League team between Jan. 15 and Dec. 15. He must turn 16 before he signs and be 17 before Sept. 1 the following year -- in practical terms, that means players born between Sept. 1, 2005, and Aug. 31, 2006, will be eligible to sign in the upcoming signing period. Players have to be registered with Major League Baseball in advance in order to be eligible to sign.
