Laika Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Silver lining - cant hit into a double play if there's nobody on base. So at least they're getting on base a lot. Yeah that's actually part of it. I guess.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Author Posted October 12, 2022 I abstain from voting on this s***. Wow buddy who pissed in your Cheerios this morning?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Wow buddy who pissed in your Cheerios this morning? He didn't need someone to piss in his cheerios
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Here is a fun exercise. Double Play Adjusted Batting Average We are pretending to be a Bill James wannabe in the early 1990s and making up dumb stats. For this one we take away a single for every double play a guy hits into. Of course everybody gets worse but the colour shading should help you appreciate who holds up more. Kirk is interesting, you would expect him to be a GDP monster but he is not. Vladdy dripping 40 points. Yikes. Then again he came to bat with a runner on first more than anyone else is likely.

I am pretty sure that is not Vlad's main problem. The main problem is that he hits the ball hard on ground more than anyone in baseball.

Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Also fat and slow Really he could set a GIDP record some day He has the talent! While it is true that he is slow and fat, I doubt being slim and fast would change much given how often he hits ground balls and how hard they are.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Vlad may be fat, but he's not slow. Not really.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Vlad may be fat, but he's not slow. Not really. Just looked it up. He is 38 percentile in 90 ft sprint time. I would say he is pretty slow.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Vlad may be fat, but he's not slow. Not really. After Schneider got in his face, Vlad started to hustle and move down the baseline!
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 What contract do you sign him to for 10 years Best case .330 avg 52 homeruns 90 walks 18 double plays That is an awesome historic season and only a very, very small step from 2021 Worst case .263 avg 20 homeruns 51 walks 32 double plays That is a useless season but only a very small step from 2022
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Just looked it up. He is 38 percentile in 90 ft sprint time. I would say he is pretty slow. So if 38 percentile is slow, this means you are saying close to half of MLB players are slow. Really??
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 So if 38 percentile is slow, this means you are saying close to half of MLB players are slow. Really?? More like close to third? 62% of players would beat Vlad in a race. Vlad is clearly on the slower side in MLB. Just curious... are you trolling?

Just curious... are you trolling? No. So if the threshold between average and slow is not 38 percentile, what percentile is it at?
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 No. So if the threshold between average and slow is not 38 percentile, what percentile is it at? I see your point. Slow is a weasel word. I will rephrase my statement to "Vlad is slower than 62% of MLB players".
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 How is that evaluated, the sprint speed? Is it his max speed on bases that is being ranked or his average speed? Cause if its average speed, well... dude jogs literally 90% of the time. Even when he is on 1st base and someone lines a single, he puts no pressure on defense - jogs to 2nd base. Only times he turns it on is when he's running from 2nd to home and to 1st when he hits a dribbler.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 No. So if the threshold between average and slow is not 38 percentile, what percentile is it at? Vlad is slow when compared to the average MLB runner which would be 50th percentile. So in the context of MLB, he is slower than most. It’s kinda like saying Tapia sucks at baseball, but the reality is he’s better than the majority of the planets population, just s***** compared to other professionals in MLB.

Sprint Speed is Statcast’s foot speed metric, defined as “feet per second in a player’s fastest one-second window” on individual plays. For a player’s seasonal average, the following two types of plays currently qualify for inclusion in Sprint Speed. The best of these runs, approximately two-thirds, are averaged for a player’s seasonal average. * Runs of two bases or more on non-homers, excluding being a runner on second base when an extra base hit happens * Home to first on “topped” or “weakly hit” balls. The Major League average on a "competitive" play is 27 ft/sec, and the competitive range is roughly from 23 ft/sec (poor) to 30 ft/sec (elite). A Bolt is any run above 30ft/sec. A player must have at least 10 competitive runs to qualify for this leaderboard Pretty much only includes only the plays you said about when Vlad runs hard.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Interesting; I didn't think he was 38 percentile slow if those are the qualifiers. He makes it pretty close on weakly hit balls when he chugs but I suppose I'd feel different if I watch Rays/Guards on those very same type of plays. He also loves going to Halifax when turning 3rd adding extra distance to reach home.

And the guy at 49 percentile is "slower than most" also. Doesn't mean he's slow. Vlad falls within 0.5 standard deviations from the mean, this is within the range of what would be considered average speed.

Vlad probably has poor acceleration and stuff though because he's a blob. That's why he can be 38th percentile or whatever in sprint speed but 5th percentile in BsR.

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 jim i'm sorry but your 35th percentile peen is decidedly small

That's why he can be 38th percentile or whatever in sprint speed but 5th percentile in BsR. BsR takes into account GIDP and baserunning blunders, both of which Vlad is quite proficient at. It only indirectly and poorly relates to speed.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 For all the "Contenders don't give players like Tapia 500 PA" people. Tapia: 433 PAs, 0.2 WAR Y Gurriel(Astros): 584 PAs, -0.9 WAR Castellanos(Phillies): 558 PAs, -0.8 WAR I guess they're technically right, they give them more than 500.

Wow - I never realized that Gurriel and Castellanos fell off a cliff this year. Gurriel is old, so not surprising, but Castellanos just signed that massive deal. Barf.
