Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Really bad pitching from the bullpen all around though. And bad decisions by Schneider. But yeah they played fairly clean ball other than that Springer/Bo collision. Scored 9 runs. Weren’t swinging at junk (maybe George was). Even at the end against Kirby they looked good/comfortable. 99% win probability in the 5th. Mariners just have that magic this year. Were the Mariner bloop hits falling (1) bad luck bad (2) bad fielding or (3) bad managing? Probably a mix of all 3. Tapia let a fly ball drop in the 6th that had a 55% catch rate and another one in the 8th that had a 30% catch rate. Springer's collision ball had a 75% catch rate. If any of those three balls are caught the Jays likely win the game. JBJ was riding pine this entire time, even after one of our OF left the game with an injury.

Why roster a defense-first OF if you aren’t gonna bring him into the game when you have a 7 run lead. And Springer probably should have been out after his AB in the 6th. (Assuming the Mariners don’t score 4 off that Santana situation) Dude was clearly hurting.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I just got back to my hotel after attending the game. Not even really sure what to say but I think it would be therapeutic to at least share something. 1. Atkins traded for Bass at the deadline and the Mariners traded for Luis Castillo. Gabriel Moreno didn't log any playing time during the series while Jansen and Kirk, two talented Catchers in their prime, both played well. 2. Schneider rode Mayza like he was Munoz or something. Puzzling decision to turn Santana around like that. At this point in his career he's basically a platoon bat that should only face lefties. It put them right back in the game. 3. A lot of this was just dumb luck by the Mariners as their bloop hits fell but I feel like the Jays OFers could have caught some of them and they didn't. Both Tapia and Springer had a shot on some flyballs and they both failed. JBJ rode pine up until the point the game was tied at which point we needed his bat. He should have went into the game for Merrifield. If he does we probably win. Another odd choice by Schneider. 4. I'm blaming Schneider a lot and it's mostly the fault of the relievers (even Romano who let Adam Frazier and his .311 SLG line a double off him) but he did make some bad decisions and his post game comments were infuriating. He looks more no-nonsense than Montoyo but it's barely the case. He's another laid back player's manager. I think we should pay for a veteran manager with playoff experience. We have a talented core but we keep pissing away our chances. 5. I'm not really sure what the team sees in Tapia. He logged a ton of playing time this year and continued to do so in the playoffs. As much as they play him it seems like offering him arb is a possibility but I really hope they don't. He's a jack of no trades who does everything below average which makes him a terrible bench player. Agree with everything you said. A lot of blame can fall on Schneider in this one. The more I'm reading posts on this forum and watching the highlights, the more and more he should be held accountable for this loss. Pulling Gausman in the 6th after getting two outs was a huge mistake. He had an 8-1 lead, he's your ace, he's getting paid $100+ million and he just got two batters out. No need to go to Mayza against Santana. As well, given the situation with Game 3 tomorrow, you wanted Gausman to go deeper to save some important bullpen arms in a do-or-die game. Like even using Romano for two innings today, would have he been available for tomorrow after throwing 30 pitches or more? Also, considering the Jays don't have an elite bullpen, you need to get more from your starters especially when you have your ace on the mound. Big time fail by Schneider. Tapia is the other problem. He could have caught two balls that dropped in front of him in left field. I was even saying to myself off the bat these are catchable, though Tapia comes sliding in like he's making an extremely difficult catch. Again, some accountability needs to be taken by either this front office or management staff on why they kept playing Tapia so much and especially in the Postseason. Just awful. Put JBJ or Zimmer, and likely they catch one of those balls that drop. Like you said, the trade deadline for the Blue Jays was very meh. Yes they made some nice acquisitions though none of those players took this team to the next level.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Why do the Jays keep Zimmer and JBJ on the playoff roster if it's not to use as defensive replacements when ahead in the game? That is the only reason they are on the roster. What the actual f***? When they were ahead 8 -1 Tapia was then the opposite of what they needed. Mind boggling...

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Yay or nay "Yay". Mentally I combine yesterday in totality with missing the playoffs by 1 game in '21, in large part due to the pen. I watched '87. Slow moving demise of strung out pain. Watched some rough post season losses to KC in George Brett days and to OAK. We saw Nelson behind the plate vs KC in 2015 Gm 6 and what he did. That hurt. But yesterday was calamitous. It felt self inflicted. Tops it all. How it went down with Vlad's last AB GB and Tapia making the last out was fitting for '22. Tapia is exactly the type of depth this team didn't need for 500 PAs of chase and horrible D. Putting him and his 9th percentile jump in LF when we had JBJ to move around out there at 8-1, is inexcusable. Our pen was ok with Pop and Bass adds but really....it's still comparatively mediocre for a deep run. It comes into clear light when you flip around watching all the post season games and the flaming filth most teams are rolling out routinely juxtaposed against Romano at times struggling to top 96 and flipping endless sliders (to their 9 hitter) as a result. Yesterday was a dagger to the heart, in front a packed house at home. It lays naked the laughable nature of the "this will be the movie" and "this is my house" talk. It makes it the worst loss in our history as a result.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 It’s up there and boy did the jays have some bad luck with the bloop hits. The collision with Bo and Springer was costly as well. Bullpen was a weakness and again it cost us

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Worst part of it all (nobody wants to admin it) is the Jays didn't really make any obvious mistakes... the Mariners just got lucky AF. There were plenty of mistakes did u watch the game?
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 '87 worse Which game in 1987? I've been a diehard fan since 1984, and this is FOR SURE the worst loss in franchise history. Just the biggest choke, disgusting win ever. I am not even sad. Just really angry.

Springer was just a walking bag of bandaids for weeks. Up by a ton, yeah, JBJ and Zimmer in. And none of this f***ing happens. But I also blame Mayza and Bass for looking like s***, too.
Fastball21 Verified Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I haven't seen it mentioned here so what about Vlad going 1-8? That's pretty concerning to me, there are some who think he isn't taking the game seriously enough and plays around to much, he's still young but I'm starting to lean this way as well, I think he needs to tone it down a bit.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Before Tapia began his sad clown act, when I saw him coming in for Whitt I had friends over and I was screaming at the TV "no no no -JBJ!!!!". My friends are all casuals and they say "why are you going mental? Tapia is fast and good in the OF" That decision and turning Santana around to face Mayza are now infamous in Jays lore. The Springer Bo thing on a 75% catch probability and Romano running low on gas flipping yet another slider to the 9 to put in play just make it overwhelming clusterf***ery. (And some twisted baseball gods bad luck) The slider over use was always going to catch up to Romano, makes no f***ing sense, hitters look for it. The lack of defensive replacements was a huge error by Schneider

Plat Verified Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 It's gotta be up there with the worst losses in Toronto sports history, what a collapse, I'm still pissed. This team needs to stop talking so damn much, the trailer/movie and pressure in tires talk gotta stop, haven't even won a single playoff game.

The lack of defensive replacements was a huge error by Schneider Becoming too predictable. I just don't think he has his good V or command of his FB last night. Getting tired too. On the winning run he had just given up a 2B on a Center cut 96. You know Frazier was sitting on a juicy first pitch slider and he caught it hanging. Didn't miss.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I think we have to take it easy on Romano here. He came into the 8th with two on. He allowed a base hit. Then he got the next two batters out. Big outs. The BFH (bloop from hell) well, what could he do? If the BFH had been caught we may be talking about him being one of the games mvp’s this morning.

Yeah Romano came on and got two big outs. Almost got out of that mess in the 8th if it wasn't for that bloop hit. As for his performance in the 9th, Schneider left him in for too long or shouldn't even have had him start the ninth. Again awful management by Schneider today. The guy made some boneheaded moves all game. One of the worst managed games I've seen in a long time.

Sportsnet still tried to sugarcoat it with: "the same group will be back next season with other new players to complement them, this team is still young and exciting, a learning moment for this team etc."

This is what really concerns me here is the GB rate. 75 percent is too high for a 1st baseman. Extend Manoah and move on from Groundbollo would make sense. The Jays can try Horowitz or Berger at first next year.

Ya, I'm not s***ing on him. Agreed. Just discussing if he had his good FB and % slider use. He also pitched the night before and was at like 25 pitches when he gave up the winning run. If he has 99 maybe he doesn't throw the #9 a slider and maybe its a K - no bloop. He is allowed to be tired. Munoz didnt look his sharpest either. If the ump doesn't f*** that ball 4 call and Kirk walks who knows what might have happened. My bud just texted me from TOR. Bandwagon casual there for the games. Got on the elevator this morning at the Ritz Carlton with a bunch of the Mariners and said they were "pretty chill guys". Easy to be chill when you just come back from 7 down for a W and series win in TOR. I hope the Astros crush them. Edited October 9, 2022 by BigCecil

This team has a lot of stupid players on it, and we can’t really use the young/inexperienced excuse anymore. Bo and Vlad only have a couple years left before Free agency FFS

They need to sell the Jays as a potential World Series contender and build up hype again for next season. That's why I don't take any of their analysis seriously.

Yah with 2 good pitchers and nobody in sight coming up off the farm. Pearson is a total bust, but yea one of the best built teams in baseball right now bahahah. You do realize pitching wins in this league not 22 right handed power bats.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Tell me how that is not accurate? We are the one of the best built teams in baseball right now. This team isn't one of the best teams built in baseball or else they would still be playing, c'mon Kev! They didn't address a weakness on this team for two straight years and we saw that on full display yesterday how this bullpen couldn't even close out a 8-1 lead. Inexcusable for a team with World Series aspirations at the beginning of the season. Also, there are questions marks surrounding some of their main core pieces. I stated I'm for giving Vladdy, Bo and Berrios a mulligan on this season and hope in 2023 they can show some of their 2021 form. Though if you think they come back as the same team without some major improvements to the bullpen, bench and adding another SP, you're nuts.
