glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 He's in a corner somewhere crying. He's getting money from the Jays for the rest of this season and all of next season, while having all the free time in the world to play bongos. He's fine.

Just a hunch. There were obviously things they disagreed on which we may never know about. For ths most part Charlie probably followed orders but he was clearly lacking an element of leadership. Fun over winning. That can’t fly when the stakes are high and the GM’s job is at risk. For example AA and Farrell had a big disagreement about which guy should get the bulk of playtime at SS (Hechavarria vs Vizquel) which we never knew about until years later.

Just a hunch. Charlie is an ideal #2 like he was in TB Hard working, respectful, experienced. Where he lacked was in his ability to motivate, be respected by players and umps/get the best out of his players. I remmember watching Caleb Joseph fire up the team before their playoff series. WELL, shouldn't that be the manager?

Theres 1000 different ways to fire up the team, it doesnt necessarily need to be the manager. The managers job is to find out which way works best, then make it happen. Whether it's him doing it, a respected veteran , the bench coach or whomever.

WELL, shouldn't that be the manager? Ideally, if I could choose between a player and a manager, I'd rather a player get the group wound up and motivated. They're the ones that are going in to battle on the field together. The manager, although definitely part of the team, is still at an arms length away.
