Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Any decent centerfielders available? Nyquin just went to the Mets. Laureno would be my target.
Jays333 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Just like Soto Ohtani is not worth a fortune. Get him only for 1.5 years. His career isn't going to be long either even if we sign him long term. So much wear and tear

His career isn't going to be long either even if we sign him long term. So much wear and tear He’s the most valuable player in all of baseball. Anything short of emptying the entire farm would be worth it. But I still say he’s not gonna be traded. Arte Moreno just can’t keep his hands off the wheel
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 I think they really need to look at a good fall back plan for CF and maybe catcher. This offense and defense look a lot different without Springer and Jansen. The players they have now can shuffle to fill holes in all the other positions and still compete. If they lose Springer and/or Jansen the outlook is not nearly as rosy. I might even put those two positional needs ahead of relief pitching but it would be close. I think they can fill all three of those needs without breaking the prospect bank.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 While Ohtani is great, him being a full time DH really doesnt fit our team. Springer and Kirk need that spot so you're basically benching those guys for a lot of games if we get Ohtani.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Any decent centerfielders available? Ian Happ
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Hypothetical... VladJr for Ohtani Or VladJr+ for Ohtani+ Do you do it? Definitely not.

This team needs a long term replacement in CF and you could certainly argue they also need a short term replacement in CF who we could survive with for an extended period. Catcher on the other hand? We have the most depth in MLB right now behind the dish man.

I'd probably think about moving one of Teo/Gurriel in the offseason and shifting Springer to RF/LF permanently. Someone like Mullins would be perfect

Ketal Marte would also be a great fit, but like Mullins, will be expensive. I also see they've moved him to 2nd base full time this year (although it doesn't look like he's great defensively there).
The Iceman Verified Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Could Bo be a long term option @ CF? Espinal to SS?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Could Bo be a long term option @ CF? Espinal to SS? Interesting idea… maybe they should get someone in the minors like Groshans to start playing CF or something?
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 The more I think about a trade with the Cubs the more I want it to happen. Robertson and Happ would be a solid get. Happ would be someone you'd want to play everyday (would be a top 4-5 player on the roster based on fWAR) and is solid defensively in LF. Even after how hot Tapia has been I'd still punt him off the roster if an improvement could be found. 0.1 fWAR with a 101 wRC and horrendous D.

You'd have Ian Happ for 2023, but I think this really depends on whether you think he's a viable option defensively in CF (and I'm not sure he is).

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 He is a viable option at 6 or 7 positions defensively He's played 12 innings in CF this year. If he's an average defensive CFer than he is significantly more valuable to the Jays than someone who can only really handle LF/RF. It's also quite a stretch to think he's actually viable at 3rd, 2nd, 1st, etc.

For short appearances he'd be fine as a backup to Springer, but everyday he'd get exposed, imo. There's a reason the Cubs plug him in LF only now. He isn't an infielder anymore either, I don't get what LTBF is thinking.

Tapia only 60 for reference

Defensive Runs Saved 2022 Springer 539 innings................ -1 Happ 735 innings................... +4 LTBF is right.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Author Posted July 29, 2022 Vladdy has +7 defensive runs saved in 2022, lets put him in CF. We're not discussing the viability of Vladdy playing outfield for Springer's days off. Happ also crushes Springer among outfield uzr.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 Defensive Runs Saved 2022 Springer 539 innings................ -1 Happ 735 innings................... +4 LTBF is right. I said he can play CF in a pinch, he's no longer an infielder, though. Those numbers from Happ are LF, with OAA Happ is -1 at LF... Springer is +1 at CF, fairly big discrepancy. I'd love Happ on this team, sign me up, but they need to take care of the pen first and foremost. ETA: I'm not a big fan of defensive numbers, they seem to fluctuate far too much for me. LTBF is never right
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 He has played 250 games in CF in his career in the majors lol. JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 I just don't want our FO to make stupid trades. We need pitching and that's the bottom line but don't give away the farm.
