Of course it is. Sounds like he won't start Friday, but Saturday is the day

Catching for Gausman in his first MLB start?? Okayyyyy lets go

Ya. Highest trade value of the 3 is probably Kirk right now. Question is, would trading Kirk be a sell high or a sale of a true talent unicorn short fat guy that OBP .450 with power and can catch

His minor league stats were great, his contact rate is great. He is a lifetime .287 .365 .465 hitter. He's under-valued because he is 5'2" 300 pounds and because of the missing 2020.

His max exit velocity/distance seems to be around 110 mph, 420 so he has power.

His fangraphs batted ball data is similar to Michael Brantley's.

What if he had the same rate stats but was 6'3" 215 and there was no pandemic so he had a chance to put up good numbers in the high minors and get on the prospect lists? What would his value be then?

If Alejandro Kirk wasn't a short, fat guy he'd 100% be untouchable.

He may be untouchable anyways.

Are we certain that Moreno won't go back down when DJ comes back?

They might be just giving him a taste while they can.

I guess if he lights MLB up it'll make it harder to send him back down, but I don't think his call up is necessarily permanent, or a trade of a catcher is a sure thing.

I kind of don’t see how jansen isn’t the one you trade unless they know something about Kirk beyond that he is small and fat.

They wouldn’t call Moreno up if they intended to trade imo. This almost has to hurt his trade value in the short term. Maybe.. or maybe teams don’t care at all about short term performance in the majors?

Kirk is 23 and we have him until he is 28. Again, unless he has something going on we don’t know about, then who cares about his height and weight.

Jansen is the odd one out.

It could be just a quick look for Moreno and there’s no trade this year, but I still think it’s more likely then that Jansen would be gone in the off-season.

If my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle

Not necessarily anymore

Lol. I grew up hearing that expression as a kid and as soon as I posted that, I just thought of the above. I’ll have to stop using it

Jansen is definitely the one they trade, it’s just a matter of when. It won’t be during this season so this off season at the earliest. He has the fewest years of control left and can’t stay healthy. Plus, while Montoyo doesn’t do it often enough, he at least uses Kirk in the DH spot from time to time, something he won’t do with Jansen, so Kirk is likely the more useful player to the team.

Is he only a catcher or can he play at other positions on the infield?

He has played 3B before but I'm not sure he has this season yet.

So what's your point? The equivalent question in that case would be, say your Aunt was getting paid 85k a year, and she was wondering if she was under-paid. What would she get paid if she had balls? If the answer is 125,000 then maybe she is underpaid.

If Kirk's trade value would be higher if he was tall and had a complete 2020 season in the high minors and got high up on the lists... then he's under-rated. That's all.

What ifs are just an empty exercise. What if he somehow had 80 speed? What if he could telekinetically make his balls drop in for hits? What would his value be then?

Blue Jays To Promote Gabriel Moreno

By Sean Bavazzano | June 8, 2022 at 10:17pm CDT

The Blue Jays are calling up top catching prospect Gabriel Moreno, as first reported by Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase. Keegan Matheson of MLB.com adds that Moreno’s call-up is likely to coincide with Toronto’s upcoming weekend series in Detroit. No 40-man moves will be required to facilitate Moreno’s debut, as the young catcher was added to the team’s roster back in 2020.

Signed as an international free agent in 2016, the 22-year-old Moreno has seen his stock soar after an excellent 2021 showing. Entering the 2022 season both Baseball America and MLB.com ranked Moreno as the seventh best prospect in baseball after previously missing top prospect lists (and the 2020 season) entirely.

Through 32 games last season at Double-A, Moreno hit an otherworldly .373/.441/.651 with eight home runs and a manageable 22 strikeouts. A right thumb fracture limited the amount of regular season reps given to the Jays’ top prospect, but it didn’t stop him from receiving a promotion to Triple-A at the end of the year. An additional 100 plate appearances of .329/.410/.494 hitting in the Arizona Fall League, against older competition no less, only helped to reinforce the hype.

Moreno’s 2022 season hasn’t been quite as powerful as last season’s performance, but a .323/.377/.406 showing against Triple-A competition was clearly enough to impress Toronto’s top brass. Those 35 games will net Moreno his first big league call-up, but it remains to be seen what position he’ll be manning when the decision becomes official.

Primarily a catcher with a strong arm, Moreno has received the odd start at DH and third base in recent years to get his right-handed bat into teams’ lineups. With Alejandro Kirk producing at an elite level from behind the plate and offseason acquisition Matt Chapman locked in at third, there doesn’t appear to be a slam dunk place on the field for Moreno to helm.

Catcher Zack Collins was recalled just yesterday to fill in for injured catcher Danny Jansen (who was having a strong season in his own right), a move that perhaps signals the three catchers will shuttle between catcher and DH duties for the time being. If nothing else, Moreno’s call-up figures to place some pressure on a number of bench players and outfielders (who have seen reps at the DH position) who have underperformed offensively thus far.
