L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Danny Jansen gave the front office every opportunity to extend him for peanuts and they squandered it. Now he will demand 10 year 200M contact at the end of the season. They should’ve extended him this offseason. A 4/40M extension that bought out his last two arb years and two FA years was what I suggested. As long as Kirk is here there will have to be a catching tandem
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Danny Jansen has more WAR now than Vladdy in half the playing time.

I had thought there would have been an extension for someone over the off-season. I thought it would be Jansen after the Moreno trade

glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 This front office extended Randal f’n Grichuk two years before free agency when the team was openly tanking so I would hope they prioritize someone like Jansen during a competitive window. If they think they are set at catcher long term then they might be in for a rude awakening. Extend Jansen, keep splitting time with him and Kirk to keep both healthy/fresh, and go from there. Kirk hasn’t hit for any power in 12 months so I’m not sure a grossly out of shape singles hitter is a huge asset even at catcher. The Jays need Jansen.

As long as Kirk is here there will have to be a catching tandem I don't think that's still not a possibility, I wouldn't be opposed to inking him for 3 years of FA.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Braves gave Murphy a 6 year, $73M extension. Jansen won't get that much IMO. Probably could extend Jansen around 4 years/50 million. I don't think it would be too difficult.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Yeah or 3 years/40M isn't that bad if you want a shorter term and increase the AAV a bit. It's an interesting discussion what it would take to get Jansen to sign an extension. I think the proposed numbers may be a little high given that he's only making $3.5 million for the season, and unless he manages to stay on the field and have a big season offensively he won't likely get a massive raise in the offseason either. Sean Murphy isn't a great comparable, as while Jansen *may* have somewhat similar upside (this year's breakout from Murphy notwithstanding), Murphy has shown the ability to provide this type of value over a full season as he hasn't suffered the litany of soft tissue injuries that keep popping up for Jansen.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 They probably could still sign him to a similar type of extension or for maybe more AAV. Well ya I’m sure he would be open to getting more money. The point of doing it this offseason was to try and lock in a lower rate. Plus I don’t think I’d be too horny to give him more than 10M/year. Two arb years and two free agent years would’ve taken him to age 32 at 10M/year.

Like I said as long as Kirk is catching the position will have to be a tandem and if you run some s***** all glove no bat as part of the tandem that’s not pretty
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 The closer they get to FA the less incentive there is to sign an extension.

I don't think there is much of a difference if they locked him in during the offseason or if they lock him up now. Maybe we're talking about a 2M difference in terms of AAV if anything or an extra year. But yeah something around 4 years/40M would still be doable.

I'm using the Murphy contract as a benchmark. So there is no way Jansen gets the same or close to what Murphy gets. L54 suggested 4/40M last offseason and Jansen still likely would get that extension or a bit more right now. It's not like the Jays missed the boat in signing him to an extension last offseason. He likely could sign for similar money now if they wanted to extend him.
bluejaysinternNo5 Verified Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 I'd even give him 60 million. But that would be my upper range.
wamco Verified Member Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 I don't think there is much of a difference if they locked him in during the offseason or if they lock him up now. Probably not a world apart but he’s a year closer to free agency and has an extra 3.5m in his pocket. He was already hurt this year so I don’t see him signing during season at a low- ball offer.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Jansen up to 746 OPS on the season. Should be able to overtake Vladdy by end of July and then become the team leader in September. My only complaint is that I wish he was not so smug and didn't give his teammates a head start in the race early in the season.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 It’s almost sabr mutiny, you guys pimping a .283 obp
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 4/40 should still be doable. Would love that deal but OK if you have to go to 5
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I really don't think Danny is going to be that expensive to retain. Plus he's fairly injury prone. Would be shocked if he got anymore than 2-3 year deal.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Extend this beautiful MF at the All Star Break It's the right thing to do
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 My guess is yesterday's price is not today's price. They really should have extended him a while ago, especially if they were willing to trade Moreno. Hopefully they bring him back even if they have to pay market value. They have nothing in the upper minors as far as catching prospects, and Kirk is a backup at best at this rate. They need him, especially since they will avoid a rebuild like the plague, so might as well keep good players in that case.

That's just it I don't trust Kirk to catch over 1/3 of the time And there's no one else If you don't extend Jansen you're going to pay free agent $$ for someone else who probably isn't as good
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 I've always been a huge Jansen fan and wouldn't mind an extension. However, we might need to use the money on a different position. Kirk's defense is becoming elite, especially with framing thrown in. His noodle bat has been disappointing but he still projects well and at worst can take a walk as the #8 hitter.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 The only reason why I think he might extend is because he’s so injury prone But if he bets on himself and stays healthy heading into FA he will cash in

Getting hurt again could cost him.
