Laika Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 They should just forfeit the game. Nah there are certain players who are 100% healthy and it's probably best for them to get their regular action.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Forfeits are the Bogeyman in baseball. I've been a big advocate of them in blowout games. But instead, managers throw out valuable relievers or position players and make a complete mockery of the game instead. This is another type of instance in which a forfeit is warranted. The only thing I would ensure however is that you announce that you will forfeit well ahead of time so that all 420 fans in Baltimore know not to show up. Timmy - Did the Orioles make the playoffs Daddy? Daddy - No Timmy, the Orioles did not pull off the miracle. However they have several young fun players, and I got a day off from the West Virginia coal mine I work at, and TImmy, we are going to go see Rutchman, and Henderson and Mullins, and cheer and have some candy corn. It is the only time I will see you since your Mom divorced me, but we will go to a cold September game and make memories seeing our young Orioles. TImmy - I love you Daddy. I am so excited. Mom says you are a dead beat, and Richard is my Dad now, but I told Richard we are going to the ballgame, and I love you, not him. Special announcement! the Toronto Blue Jays have forfeited the game to prepare for their playoffs, please do not come to Camden Yards!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Springer, Vlad, Bichette, and Kirk should definitely get rest. Everyone else you can use according to what lineup spots can't be filled by bench players.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 I heard Rogers may be doing their own broadcast this year, so that might be worth watching instead lol I'm in the States, so I'll be watching on mute, I guess.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 It's pretty crazy to think that Danny Jansen is going to finish the year with the highest wRC+ on the team. And Pujols may finish with a 150 wRC+ Baseball is a crazy sport. I love it.

It’s quite impressive that all of these guys have a wRC+ > 110 Jansen Springer Guerrero Hernandez Kirk Bichette Merrifield Chapman Gurriel And Espinal and Biggio are at 99 and 96
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 The reference to forfeit was in jest. But not in jest, Jays should put their worst shitballing pitcher at DH

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Interesting stat I just uncovered: Berrios has given up at least 1 earned run in EVERY single start going all the way back to mid-May. YIKES. The last time Berrios gave up 0 runs? He pitched 7 shutout innings vs the Mariners. That hardly seems very damning on it's own giving up a minimum of 1 earned run in each appearance for a starter. If Berrios had given up something like 3 or 4 earned runs in every appearance this stat on it's own would be cause for concern.
jerb Verified Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Mike Wilner @Wilnerness It's an ugly weather day in Baltimore and there's a good chance tonight's game gets banged early. If there's no game tonight, #Bluejays have been told there will not be a doubleheader tomorrow, just the regular 4:05pm Eastern start. Then home for the playoffs.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 The reference to forfeit was in jest. But not in jest, Jays should put their worst shitballing pitcher at DH Long term they may need to change roster rules a bit so teams can carry a shitballer. 28 is too low for September. 40 may have been extreme but why not 32? And maybe an extra roster spot or 2 long term during the rest of the season. Starters are all pitching 50 innings less than 15 years ago so need to adjust.

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 The Espinal and Gurriel injury timelines are pretty awful I'm not sure I would be starting Gurriel in the WC round at all, even against a LHP (Ray). And Espinal might not even play for me. He's certainly not starting in the WC round and it's not obvious who he would even pinch hit for. He's probably just injury infield coverage. Or a last resort pinch runner in a weird game if the other bench pieces have all been used.

If you're starting Whit in LF with Biggio at 2nd, than LGJ/Espy certainly becomes an option to replace Biggio v. LHP. I mean thank god we traded for Merrifield, or we might be starting Biggio and Tapia in a playoff game.

Stick him at the bottom of the lineup if Bo gets injured. Maybe Lopez fills that role better, idk much about his D.

He has started every game in LF for a week now. You'd think if Whit or Biggio were going to be involved in that way they would have been doing that... instead Biggio just has the two 1B starts and Whit has been full time 2B. Against Robbie Ray Option 1 Tapia LF Whit 2B Option 2 Whit LF Espinal 2B I don't think Option 2 offers anything more offensively and it might be a downgrade since Espinal is so slow and just a boring contact bat who has been bad for months. Actually I think it's a downgrade offensively. Is it a slight upgrade on defense? Maybe but with Espinal coming back from injury he won't be sharp.

I can't speak to the rust issue with Espinal, that could be a factor, but otherwise Option 2 against a lefty is clearly the better option. Clearly. Offensively and defensively. Tapia is s***, but he's shittier against LHP. His defense is meh. Again, the rust issue could be a factor with Espinal, then again a bit of extended rest may be a good thing for him. Either way, I'm going option 2 against Ray without a second thought.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Hoping they kick Kirk out of the clean up spot It’s unfortunate he has to Catch Manoah. Jansen should be the #1. Wouldn’t be shocked if Jansen actually DH’s in Game 1.

I just assumed at this point it was a given that Kirk/Jansen will C/DH in every game from here on out. The only way I could see that no happening would be to get Gurriel in the lineup (not that I would support that).
