#61 HR ball is estimated to go for a Million dollars. Someone might be walking out of the RC a happy camper.

Gets hit into the bullpen. Doesn't reach the stands.

One of the jays relievers could use the money since most of em are only making 700K this year.

Yeah if I'm all over that if I'm Zach Pop.

He has also shown an ability to get in better shape when motivated and this mediocre season should be motivating

I'm sure weight and conditioning will always be a struggle but I think Vladdy has many great seasons ahead of him

I am not saying he will not. But using the data we have, he is likely to be inconsistent offensively with limited value defensively. Players who get 200M+ contracts usually occupy important defensive positions. You can live with fluctuations between 125 wRC+ and 200 wRC+ if you provide good defensive value. There are no examples of any team signing an inconsistent young 1B to a mega deal. Even 1B players who show some consistency are not getting mega deals. Why should Vladdy get more than Yordan Alvarez?

Weird that attendance was only 30,000.

In 2015 Jays/Yankees sold out a Monday night around the same time and there was way more buzz.

Do you think it's just the division vs wild card? If the Jays were tied with the Yankees would we see a full house?

I would have thought the Aaron Judge homerun chase would give added incentive. Oh well. Probably the next 5 are 40,000+?? Hot dog night tonight, weekend games, last game of series seems to get more.

On Twitter they are saying the economy is in crisis, everyone is poor and saving up for Playoff tickets. Who knows if Twitter knows anything though.

I would suspect it is a combination of things. Some likely still aren't coming out due to COVID worries. Some are due to inflation and having less disposable income than they did before. Also, travel can still be hit or miss so you might have less people coming in from the rest of the country than you would have before.

Idk it was cold and rainy last night so maybe that had something to do with it

Yeah I was surprised as well.

Maybe because it was a Monday night and it was cold and rainy yesterday, which probably limited the amount of walkups.

Also, I do think a tough economic crisis plays a role somewhat. Though people will still spend money they don't have, so I don't think it's the main reason why the Jays didn't have 40K fans. Regardless, going down to a game was always expensive when you factor in transit or parking, food, drinks and tickets as well. Two 100 level infield seats are going to be $200 for a pair, dinner $50+ along with beers at the game which will run you almost $15 per can. Best to sometimes watch a game in the comfort of your own home, with your own food and own beer haha. Even myself, would rather save that money to spend on a Postseason game if I had the choice.

I think the next 2 games against the Yankees will be 40K plus since the Aaron Judge HR chase is all Sportsnet and sports radio shows talked about yesterday.

The economy is f***ed. People don't feel like they have safe disposable income like they used to.

Also, a good chunk of people still don't have a lot of interest in packed venues because of Covid.

Do the casual fans even give a f*** about the homerun record?? Do they even know who Aaron Judge is?? Likely not

They probably heard about it on Twitter or on Sportsnet just last night and I'm sure some will be heading down to the dome tonight and Wednesday.

Most fans don't give a s*** about it because it's a lame niche record. "most homeruns in the american league from someone who is not a confirmed steroid user" is lame as f*** sorry Judgey

hit 74 next year and we will care more

AL/NL league records are like runner up prizes. Undisputed MLB record or bust.

Most concerts and entertainment venues this summer across Canada were all packed. Don't think the fear of Covid plays a huge role at all anymore to be honest. Sure maybe for some people, but it's a small minority. Main reasons are likely crappy weather and a crappy economy like you said.

School is back and Covid is popping back up. I'm hearing about more cases and outbreaks this month than the entire summer prior.

Significant surge is happening in the UK right now

Yeah also factor in being a Monday night, school night on top of that and on a cold/rainy evening with the dome closed. Not like a Monday night game in the summer with nice weather and the roof open.

Do you still follow the number of Covid cases everyday? I get the feeling most people have moved on. Restaurants, bars, malls and even entertainment venues are still packed. The Weeknd concert over the weekend (no pun intended) was sold out. Maybe certain age groups will be more cautious when it comes to attending large events but majority of people in the 20-40 age range likely will still be attending sporting events or concerts.

No I don't follow anything, this is all anecdotal.

But in the last couple of weeks I have had multiple clients cancel appointments because they have Covid. That was not happening all summer.

And the lawfirm down the street has a 20 person outbreak, apparently.

My grandma had covid this month!

Maybe the younger crowd will still go to sporting events but the old f***ers will stay home. Baseball is a sport that skews old, for fans.

I don't pay a lot of attention to COVID anymore, other than in passing, but I know we are not out of the danger zone. At any time a vaccine resistant and more lethal variant could pop up.

But right now COVID wouldn't influence a decision to go to a game or concert or whatever. And I'm 48 yrs old.

Also, it's the beginning of Fall season and usually this is the time most people get sick with the change in weather, especially when its damp. Always happens. Even I had a sore throat over the last couple of days.

I bet a lot of old folks and longtime Jays fans will still be attending games in the Postseason. Also, the games are still an excuse for a lot of the younger casual fans to go out, have some beers and party.

Yeah. The weekend games seem to be fine, and attendance is still good overall, but there seems to be a downtick in weekday games. Perhaps the weekday games are a younger demographic that may not have the disposable income.

Didn't your favourite President announce the pandemic was over? COVID is likely going to be here to stay. Most new variants will be vaccine resistant anyways though those variants will be a lot weaker than previous strains of the virus.

Kudos to you for taking the right approach and not letting COVID stop you from enjoying the things you enjoy like sporting events or concerts or hanging out with friends. The way it should be!

Different perspective here in NY. It's a big deal. The AL Record, the Yankee Record, and the "clean" record. However the former 2 are more important. So much history. Went to the Roger Maris Museum this summer, which is basically a display and 10 person movie theatre inside a dying mall. It was still awesome. Judge is also going for triple crown, but can see that fans won't care about that.

I was surprised by the attendance as well as I was expecting closer to a sellout. The Jays have pretty much locked up a playoff spot but they are still fighting for homefield in the WC round so they are playing for something, and it's against the Yankees. Judge's chase is the closest thing to a national story baseball has had in a long time. ESPN hates baseball and even they are interrupting College Football games to show Judge at bats, so there has to be some national interest for them to do that. Maybe that doesn't translate over to Canadian audiences. The fact that it's the AL/"clean" record doesn't hold the same weight as it would have if the McGwire/Sosa/Bonds stuff never happened.

The WC round starts on a Friday so I don't think anyone has to worry about tickets sales for that assuming the Jays are hosting, although the games are on ESPN, so it's going to be the death timeslots most likely (ex. noon). Toronto fans are going to show up for playoff games regardless.

Yeah they always give the Jays awful timeslots. Even in 2015 and 2016, most home games starts at 1PM or 4PM on a weekday which was awful.

It really depends who they play and what the other matchups are. I remember in 2020 when they played Tampa we got the 7pm game one day and a good time for game 2. I think Tampa has good TV numbers.

I'd say if we play Tampa, likely 5pm or later slot. If we play Seattle, could be 2pm or something.

As of now, the matchups would be:

Tampa @ Toronto

Seattle @ Cleveland

Padres @ Braves

Phillies @ Cardinals
