Tapia now ahead in wRC+ (by one point!) and fWAR by a pube.

Balance has been restored

The saddest thing about this is the Rocket has been making up ground in ISO, could you imagine if Tapia finishes the year having displayed more power than Randal Grichuk, who's only plus tool is his power?

Can we go back in time, still make this trade, but release Tapia the next day? I feel that the deal would be looked at way more favorably if that were the case given how well Pinto is doing.

I wonder if he declined. Worst average EV, max EV, and ISO of his career. In Coors!

This is honestly what I thought they would do. Tapia didn’t really fit what the Jays were trying to do. But I guess they felt they might be able to fix him. My issue is how much he has played more so that he’s on the roster.

I think they were still trying to find a better LH bat after they got Tapia but couldn't land one

It's hard to get good bench players unless you develop them on your own. Guys like that can always sign with a s***** team and start. That's part of why the Dodgers have been so good is because they develop a ton of guys they can control and keep on their bench. I think we are getting close to that. AA and AAA have a ton of fringe prospect types that could turn into good controllable bench pieces.

Brett Gardner literally turned down $6M from Toronto. He preferred to not play baseball.

If he took it, would we still have Grich is the question.

I think they would have dealt him, just a slightly different deal. Maybe Grichuk + a few million for the prospect.

I'm glad that Caillou didn't sign with the Jays.

Tapia is now at a 97 wRC+ and replacement level. Grichuk at 77 wRC+ and -0.7 WAR. Atkins did this while shedding salary and gaining a C level prospect in the process.

The Rocket's baseball IQ is off the charts. Him deking out Durran tonight to turn a FB into a grand slam was legendary

Ross Atkins could make 100 trades with Dick Monfort and he wouldn't lose a single one.

Grichuk will cruise past 40 homers - Jim le cuck

Atkins shed salary that he created with that low IQ contract extension to Grichuk.

Watch him sign Tapia to a multiyear deal chasing after potential surplus. Just watch.

Kudos to Atkins for getting off that deal. I’ll be honest, when they first signed it I thought that it was an indication that this front office might not be that good.

Cost control of guys at Grichuks well established level just isn’t that important. You don’t need to lock down that calibre of player pretty much ever. Yea, technically if he’s a 2WARish player that’s surplus value but good teams find those players in their own system and pay them 700k. They certainly don’t sign them to 5 year deals pretty much ever.

Being able to extricate yourself from that and admit a mistake is good though. It shows the ability to grow rather than double down.

It's a bit of a misnomer that salary was saved in the Tapia deal, but that simply isn't the case. The deal was essentially salary neutral for this season as the Jays sent out $5,383,333 this season to Colorado. Add that to Tapia's $3,950,000 salary and you end up exactly with Grichuk's $9,333,333 2022 salary. The Jays sent $4,333,333 to Colorado for the 2023. Tapia is arbitration eligible for 2023 so if Tapia is to receive a small raise the 2023 total cash outlay could be essentially equivalent as well.

They turn some guaranteed money into essentially an option. It did shed a bit of guaranteed money.

Since May 11 (50 games), Tapia has a 133 wRC+, .320/.350/.484, and 0.7 WAR in 162 plate appearances. Only Kirk, Gurriel, and Biggio have a higher wRC+ over that span.

I'm not going to apologize to him because it's going to take more than this to wipe away the stench of everything he did prior to May 11 (including his time with the Rockies), but the Jays seemed to view him as a project that was worth developing during a contending season. If it turns out they were right about him, then that's a big positive.

Still have to wait and see though.

I'm not even sure Tapia improved on anything significant.

Seems like his ground balls are just finding holes now haha

Ah nvm they've actually got him hitting the ball harder. That explains things.

I haven't looked at the statcast numbers so don't know if anything he's doing shows a sustainable shift from what he did previously. If this is all just a BABIP related hot streak, then I guess it's worth riding it out since he hasn't been hurting the team in the last 2 months. I get the sense that the Jays think he's got another gear in him offensively, otherwise his current playing time would make no sense, so hopefully they are right.

The Rockies made him into an extreme slap.hitter but coming up the scouting reports always said he had a bit of pop

This is BP December 2014
