G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Grichuk will hit 40 + HR's with a sub. 300 OPB. Damn right he will! And nobody wants to pay for that anymore
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Damn right he will! And nobody wants to pay for that anymore Except for the Rockies. They specifically stated that their goal was to add more power.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 While it's nice to get out of the Grichuk contract I am seriously struggling to see how this makes the team better in any fashion. Grichuk could at least passably man center field and was legitimately good in right field. Tapia looks to be limited to left field and actually has a worse bat than Grichuk. Hopefully another move is incoming to bring in a better backup for center field. Tapia is Dominican, a nice addition to the clique Grichuk was gonna be sitting on the bench a lot and the trade probably solved what would have been a clubhouse issue Now Kirk is not sharing DH with Grichuk Plus saving some $$. Overall, the trade is a wash
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Grichuk will hit 40 + HR's with a sub. 300 OPB. 100% agree. If he stays healthy, he should. Count me as someone really happy he is gone, though. He was a bottleneck.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Oh shittt he gone lol. Honestly I think he complimented the roster well as a 4th OF, not a fan of Tapia at all. I’d say we need a better 4th OF now unless they think Pelacios and Biggio are enough What is core dick at
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 What is core dick at He already signed somewhere
Ray Verified Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Not entirely sure why, but this trade makes me believe another move is coming soon. What's Michael Conforto up to these days anyways?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Any word on the money going to Colorado? I'm hoping we see some fairly significant savings in exchanging for downgrading the roster a bit. Part of this is just doing right by Grichuk as well. He's always been a total pro and a positive leader in the clubhouse. He deserves fulltime at-bats somewhere.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Grichuk looked like a good clubhouse guy but paying $12 million for a bench/4th OF bat isn't ideal. Hopefully he will mash with the Rockies and Tapia possibly figure out some power.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 The AP is reporting that the Jays will send the Rockies $5,383,333 this year and $4,333,333 in 2023, FYI
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 9.7 million to Colorado. This is a pretty blah trade. I don't think the modest financial savings justify making the move. Colorado actually did pretty well here.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Not great then He gets $9,333,333 in 2022 and 2023 with: $5,383,333 paid by Jays in 2022 $4,333,333 paid by Jays in 2023 Saves less than 10M overall plus we have to pay Tapia $3,950,000 this year Still OK with it if Tapia can play a decent CF but wish there were bigger savings to help improve elsewhere
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 So essentially a salary wash in 2022, just replacing Grichuk with Tapia in the bigs, and then a $5m savings in 2023 (Tapia is arb eligible so they could NT him).
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 This is exact how I feel about this trade. Tapia is not the LH bat this team needed.

Ray Verified Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 I would imagine eating more salary is the reason we got a pretty decent looking prospect.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 After seeing such a meagre savings from this trade I like it even less given the potential of Charlie playing Tapia 5+ times a week even when everyone is healthy. Just when I thought the roster was nearly Charlie proof "boom" here comes Tapia. This seems to be essentially using cash to make an extraneous player go away while buying a prospect in return. Hopefully Pinto turns out to be a nice prospect, futurebluejays has a quick writeup on him that at least provides hope for some future value out of this.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Yeah I was kind of over having Grichuk on the team but this feels like they've made the team worse with some serious potential for Montoyo to do stupid things with Tapia in the lineup that make us pull our hair out before April ends. Tapia is more suited to a bench role and as a pinch runner than Grichuk was and if used correctly this trade does make sense. But making your roster worse to get a decent looking but longshot prospect and barely saving any money has been nervous.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Just an FYI: Tapia had the highest groundball rate last season since 2002. Looking forward to a Vladdy-esque groundball turnaround in 2022.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Shouldn't the picture be of Art Howe?
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Looking forward to a Vladdy-esque groundball turnaround in 2022. Unless he starts swinging harder this won't be to anybody's benefit. In 2018 he hit the largest percentage of flyballs for his career at 44.4%, and subsequently produced an xWOBA of .230.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Late innings we have a runner on 3rd with 1 out. We need to tie or go ahead run on 3rd. Or leading off an inning where we are down a run and need a base runner, I prefer Tapia over Grichuk, especially if the second half of the season. Check out Tapias OBP and K rate compared to Grichuk.. Yea Grichuk could get lucky and run into one, but most likely not. Regardless, as others have mentioned, look at this deal for the Team as a whole and not just Tapia-Grichuk. Probably just a chess move in the bigger picture anyway.
