Tapia's numbes batting numbers dont look awful. Sure he doesnt hit for power but the other numbers look not awful?

He's hit .271, .321, and .275 the last three years? That's a heck of a lot better than most folks on our team.

Admittedly, Im just getting into baseball but I must be missing something.

Hey, welcome to baseball! (join date 2015? weird!) :) You've picked a pretty good site for fans with advanced statistical knowledge. Generally, average is no longer considered an important stat (it has some value, but not that much). While you can get some information from all stats, the ones I personally tend to use mostly are wRC+ (which is a scale where 100 is exactly average, above 100 is better than average by x percent, and below 100 is below average by x percent) WAR (I prefer fWAR from Fangraphs as opposed to bWAR from Baseball Reference) and wOBA. Here's Tapia's Fangraphs page which will give you a much better idea of what he brings to the table than average.

He will have to win me over, we'll see. I thought we could get a better return.

We were never going to get much for Grich. He doesn't have much trade value at all.

Tapia is far from a bum. I've always thought of him as a solid player. Don't understand the hate for this guy. He's basically another Ben Revere and IMO exactly a guy we needed in our lineup. A guy that can constantly get on base for our power hitters. Enough of the solo dingers. And not to mention... Tapia can fkin run! He'll be a nightmare for catchers (wish Yankees still had Sanchez).

Don't know anything about the prospect we got but looks like the FO snagged a real good one.

If your mad about this trade, give your head a shake. We just got rid of a double play machine and his ugly contract.

Good posts, you guys won me over. Buying my grandma a Tapia jersey as we speak.

LOL. He's clearly a flawed player, we werent getting a star with Grichuk.

But the tools seem to be there if he can figure it out. Seems like a low risk, high-reward project.

Versus Grichuk, seems like a worthy bet.

Just happy he’s gone. He was tough to cheer for. Actually something interesting in return as well is fantastic. I thought they would just have to eat all of that money.

Oh god, I've been wondering for the last hour why I hated Grichuk so much last year and why I complained about him to my dad every time he came up to bat.

It was the double plays. I forgot about the double plays.

wow 17 last year, 20 in 2019. Not at the top of the league, but on the first page (15th)

Then again, those are the same totals as Vlad in those 2 years lol

I like the trade. Tapia will add a nice dynamic on the field and in the clubhouse, plus we get a lottery ticket. The question remains on how much we're sending back.

People are acting like Grichuk was supposed to land us some stud loooool come on

I don’t think anyone is implying that. We’re just talking about the fact that if Tapia is his replacement, we just made the 2022 team slightly worse.

Now I’m ready for the season.

While it's nice to get out of the Grichuk contract I am seriously struggling to see how this makes the team better in any fashion. Grichuk could at least passably man center field and was legitimately good in right field. Tapia looks to be limited to left field and actually has a worse bat than Grichuk. Hopefully another move is incoming to bring in a better backup for center field.

It's pretty much entirely baserunning. Tapia has a +6.9 BsR over that time while Grichuk is -4.8. They're pretty much a wash defensively and Grichuk is far better offensively.

If we could trust Montoyo to use Tapia strategically from a baserunning standpoint, I would classify this trade as a straight win even without taking the saved salary into account.

But we all know Montoyo is going to give Tapia way too many plate appearances and way too many high leverage pinch hit opportunities.

I was nervous about Montoyo having Greg Bird as an option going into the season because it was giving me Joe Panik PTSD but I'd 1000% take Bird over Tapia.

If anything Tapia's use might include a higher proportion of baserunning because he's not in the top 3 in Toronto. So he'll be pinch running a lot.

I'm very glad they got out of the Grichuk deal. That being said, there's a lot of celebrating going on in this thread but Tapia is garbage and, unless there's another move coming, he is absolutely going to get more playing time than anyone on here wants.

Tapia being a lefty is the worst thing for this team because it means Montoyo is going to find his career 80 wRC+ split a spot in the lineup every single time the Jays are facing a righty.

Which is going to be brutal and have people here raging harder than they did over Joe Panik. People will be begging to have Grichuk back in the lineup a month into the season.

Really hope they have another move lined up.

I've always thought the ideal situation was to have 1 or 2 left handed OFers and then have your 4th OFer be a lefty killer with speed who could play all 3 OF positions. Like Drew Stubbs.

Its interesting to note that Tapia actually hits the ball really hard when he elevates his launch angle and doesnt strike out much. The Jays fixed that issue with Vlad, maybe they can unluck some potential by doing it with Tapia. I'm encouraged by the fact that Tapia is coming from the worst organization in baseball which means there is a decent chance he wasn't exposed to any of the stuff the Jays will provide.

Can Greg Bird play outfield at all?

Love the trade depending on the money but scared shitless to see Montoyo start Tapia at DH and bat him lead off 80 games this year.

Tapia - 142 games .284 .321 .364 1 WAR

Reese - 71 games .244 .291 .322 0.5 WAR

Kirk 78 games .288 .423 .490 2.8 WAR
