I agree i think if we can find 1 more late inning RP i would be more comfortable..... I am scared for our pen i think it is ok (Mayza figured it out in the last half, Cimber is good, Romano took a big step last year, Garcia should be ok, Richards was decent, who knows what happens with Phelps).

But one late inning pitcher would solidify things though

Pie in the sky hopes would be that Merryweather is that guy .... if his arm doesn't actually detach during his delivery one day.

Grichuk over the last two full seasons is a sub 90 wRC+ hitter, a negative baserunner, and barely above replacement level overall. Him getting 400+ AB's would not be a good thing. If the current outfield alignment stays this way heading into the season, then they really need to find a LH 4th OF who can cover CF. Grichuk being RH makes his fit even worse. We need to find the next prime Jarrod Dyson, that's the ideal type of 4th outfielder for this team.

I want him to be that guy but i just assume he is going to be hurt.

Palacios is left handed, good at Defense, but ... who the hell knows with the bat. No track record in the bigs and doesnt project well with the bat, so right now he's probably on the Buffalo shuttle.

Brett Gardner is available, and would be cheap. Still projecting at 1 WAR over 400 PAs. Still a good baserunner, not terrible on D but probably trending down. Vetrin presents.

I'd take Caillou as 4th OF over pretty boy Randall anyday.

I don't know that I take a 39 year old Brett Gardner over Grichuk... He was always a pest against the Jays, but I don't really see that as an upgrade, unless you REALLY value "left handed" over everything else, which I don't.

But the fact that it's close, really shows how bad we all feel about Randall.

I really love this trade, it's huge that Atkins was able to pull this off without shipping out any of the top 3 prospects or anybody important off the expected major league roster. It's nice to think that since mid-season of 2021 the team has added Cimber, Richards, Garcia and Berrios, while also replacing Ray, Matz, and Semien with Gausman, Kikuchi, and Chapman. This team is seriously stacked, I think all that's left is another dependable leverage arm for the bullpen.

You're not wrong, but with this team as currently constructed I'm not at all worried about giving 400 ABs to Grichuk. Bat him 8th or 9th, and hope we get more of his hot streaks than usual this year.

Somebody with more autism than me should analyze which teams out there are an appreciably better 4th OF than Grich. You can't obsess about the money as there is nothing to be done about that. I think we could do worse.

Its not the money for me, its the getting nothing for the money. I would gladly pay a 4th OF 10 million dollars (on a team like this mind you that's already a legit contender) if he was still putting up positive value and good defense.

Espinal and Biggio platoon at 2B is another big outcome of this deal.

Other than Grichuk getting probably 400 AB, this team is perfectly constructed

YES

If Espinal is your everyday 2nd base with ELITE level defense and your weakest link you gotta love it.

I don't mind Randall G sticking around as our CF safety net for Springer rest days, and potential injury replacement.

Randal Grichuk is projected for about 1 WAR

Teams that have an obviously better 4th OF by the projections:

Rays: Austin Meadows

White Sox: Gavin Sheets

Astros: Chas McCormick

Dodgers: Chris Taylor

Giants: Austin Slater (this one's close)

Jarren Duran, Oscar Mercado, Tyrone Taylor don't project as much, but it's easy to see them being better than Grichuk

Lets remember we also have Phelps coming back, he could win a job and be quite good.

Yeah I had Phelps in mind as well but left him off considering we simply don't know what he's going to be able to offer coming off of major surgery.

For sure. He's the kind of arm that could come right in and be amazing though. Or, could be a nothing burger that gets released in 2 weeks.

Was that based of steamers or steamers600? I'm sure Grich's projections still have a lot of AB's listed that he may or may not get.

Meadows, McCormick, C. Taylor, Sheets are starters, though?

The 4th OF'ers would be... Phillips, Siri, Raley, and Engel from those teams. Grich is a decent 4th OF'er all things considered.

Taylor is a super utility guy, but by the projections estimate he's spends most of his time in the OF

McCormick is very much a 4th OF, Brantley, Meyers and Tucker have the other positions locked up.

Meadows and Sheets are fair, probably the DH, they'll platoon with Diaz and Vaughan most likely.

I agree Grichuk is a decent 4th OF, especially since the WAR difference between all those guys are really close anyway.

So wait, did Carlos Baerga break this?

Seems to have been the first to break Chapman to the Jays but was a tad off in his reports of the return

Yes. And supposedly, he’s saying that the Jays are going after Ramirez even harder now. I never read that from him myself, though.

I think Pearson is the X-factor in the pen. Romano and Pearson are going to be a lock down 8th/9th inning guys. Cimber, Mayza, Garcia, Richards are middle inning guys and Merryweather is that complete unknown who will either put together an incredible season and our pen will be untouchable - or he'll blow up and be nothing (probably a 10/90 split on those outcomes).
