Chapman PROJECTS to be the team's 7th best hitter, guys. Seventh.

(that's wOBA projected in order, based on the FG DC projections)

I don't think they hit him 2nd in the order unless he is killing it for several weeks of the season

Out of curiosity, what did Semien project to hit last year before the season started?

I think anyone that puts him 2nd is assuming he's closer to the 2019 version than last years. You also have to account that there are egos involved so there is 0 chance he bats 7th unless hes an utter disaster this Spring. He will definitely bat 5th at worst and then let the season decide where he goes from there imo

Granted, but those projections are heavily influenced by his last two seasons of performance post hip surgery. If Chapman has fully recovered from that operation like he claims there is a non-zero percent chance that his true talent level is closer to his 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Exactly my thoughts. People had Semien batting 6th/7th before the season started last year. If he looks great in spring training, he will go 2nd. If not, he bats 5th.

He struck out 200 times last year coming off a hip injury and you want to put him 2nd in the order? Let him regain his form at least before putting that kind of pressure on him with his new team.

256 K's in has last 188 games.. yikes. Gotta pray that we aren't getting that guy lol

Winner, winner, Chicken Dinner.

This.

Also wouldn’t be totally surprised to see Grichuk hitting above Chapman

Yeah that’s what I was factoring in. Getting into the mind of a man who was putting 2021 Joe Panik at DH, and pinch hitting Valera for Kirk late in games is going to lead to weird predictions.

Although like I said if Chapman proves he’s back offensively then top of the order would be fine.

Projections don't matter, it's what is in Montoya's gut that matters.

It's possible although I tend to assume narratives like that aren't true.

But yeah if he's got a .360 wOBA end of April, move him on up

This is an absolutely stellar acquisition of my number 1 target going into the offseason.

Our biggest concerns at the end of last season were the lack of a third baseman and poor team defense/general run prevention. The impact that a a gold glove third baseman will have on this team can't be overstated.

Some will being up his handedness, but it needs to be noted that this team led the league in OPS against right handed pitchers last year. Chapman himself has identical splits against RHP and LHP. A lefty bat would be nice, but this addresses far more issues. A Biggio/Espinal tandem at 2B will be really solid in my opinion.

My number 1 target crushing a right hander to beat Houston. I love it. Many wanted other players instead, but we couldn't have found a better fit.

Uhmm... I don't recall anyone not wanting Chapman, that trade sent me to the moon! Hahah!

I’m on record for saying Eduardo Escobar. 1.1 WAR to 0.4 so far. 10% down

It was a really unpopular idea when the Ramirez rumours were going around and everyone was on the lefty bat bandwagon, but regardless, the man has quietly been a stud. He's money on both sides of the ball.

Congrats on being right, for once.

Congratulate Ross Atkins. I didn't make any trades, but he got a 2 time 6 WAR player for pennies on the dollar.

Chapman is a great fit on this team, but the team actually received stellar play at third base by Espinal last season, especially defensively. It's great that the front office was able to revamp the infield defence and the club may have improved defensively overall, despite losing a gold glover in Semien from second base.

As good a defender as Semien is, Chapman is still better, so I don't think "may have" is a necessary qualifier.

I try not to make definitive statements especially this early into the season just to cover my own ass later on, but this team's infield looks to be upgraded to a massive degree compared to last season. As amazing as Espinal was last season at third the club just brought aboard a platinum glover and arguably best third base defender in baseball. Semien was nails defensively at second but Espinal may be even better. Bo has looked very good at short stop, especially compared to his earlier season struggles of a year ago. And finally Vladdy is continuing to mature at first base and may end up as a plus defender there.

Only issues with Raimel in the outfield is his decisions on his throwing...wrong base and/or overthrowing the cutoff man.

It's cause his arm is so powerful and he doesn't know his own strength.
