We would get Schwarber's prime years and I think think there's a solid chance that Schwarber's bat (wRC+) is better than Freeman's over the next 4 years. I think Freeman's wRC+ is closer to the 135 range it was in 2018, 2019 and 2021 than the 186 it was in the shortened 2020. I think Schwarber is a lot closer to a 140 wRC+ hitter now that pitchers can't use spider tack and will further benefit from the shift rules (if implemented).

 

Schwarber is much more likely to be OK with DH'ing and he can play (poorly) in the outfield or at 1st if we need to give Springer or Vlad the day off - or get Kirk some at bats at DH. Sign Schwarber and spend the rest of the money elsewhere.

Yeah, Schwarber + a 3B (not named Villar) is a much more sensible idea than signing Freeman. Of course the issue with that is the FA 3B market sucks, so they'll have to lose some assets in order to get Ramirez (if available/realistic) or Chapman (definitely available but at what cost?) in that scenario. This lineup with Ramirez and Schwarber added to it is fap worthy.

I agree, but still think we would want a 3B acquisition on top of Schwarbs. A Freeman contract probably looks great for the first half and could turn ugly in the last few years. Offense hasn’t really been a weak point for this club and I think the money is better spent elsewhere

Sounds like most are down to sign Schwarbar and trade for Chapman/Ramirez.

 

It totally seems like the logical move as Schwarber + Chapman/Ramirez combined will earn less over the next 2 years than Freeman.
