Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 The length is bad but the AAV is relatively low. They are definitely going to be eating some years on that but I think there's a chance this doesn't end up being so bad.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Maybe he would have been given a pass if he pretended to apologize for the hanging comment and kept quiet, but he kept saying things that he knew would not be taken well by the voters. That said he deserves to get in on merit. Merit and the bloody sock.

Turner is projected for what? 4.7war a year? Even if he gives them 5-6 good years, they will have broken even on it, the rest will be just a bonus. Add jersey sales, and a possible championship and it's peanuts for a big market team willing to sign a key position player.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Ryu was signed the year before that too. We basically sign one top tier FA each year now. We aren't LA or the NYY but are otherwise considered a big market team now. I just wish the likes of Max, Verlander, DeGrom we’re on the market when Jays were in the market to overpay for a Starter.

They were close on Cole allegedly. You could argue he was that calibre as a free agent. They pivoted to Ryu
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Every year people cry about the free agent market and how everyone's being overpaid. Either you have an endless budget or you need to fit on most of the deals you dish out. Welcome to the big boy club.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 All I think about when I hear these deals is how it will impact the Jays ability to sign anyone of significance. They're not going into luxury tax territory... Trades it is. According to Nicholson-Smith, we were willing to go multiple years on Verlander, who was surely not signing less than $40M AAV. That would’ve blasted us past the first luxury tax threshold. Seems like we have around $30M-$40M to spend this offseason. My bold prediction is we do cross the threshold by the end of the 2023 season after midseason acquisitions. Jays were an absolute cash cow for Rogers this past year.

In the future a 28 million AAV will probably look like less than it is now too.

He finished runner-up for the Cy Young Award three times. He played 20 years in the majors and finished with a 3.46 ERA and 3,116 strikeouts. He is one of 19 pitchers to record 3,000 or more strikeouts. The only retired pitchers in the club who are not in the Hall of Fame are Schilling, Clemens and CC Sabathia. Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are still playing. Curt Schilling earned runs allowed in 19 career postseason starts: 2 1 6 0 0 1 1 1 1 2 1 2 6 1 0 0 5 2 1 2 ER or fewer in 16 of 19 starts. He is the the best big-game pitcher of my generation an unequivocally belongs in the Hall of Fame. He 100% deserves to be in the hall and whoever disagrees can f*** off!
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 "deserved" descends into semantics here on talent alone he does but all things considered Curtis Schilling deserves the bed he made for himself if I call your mom a soggy taco I don't expect her to invite me for brunch
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Ok so what has Schilling actually said that is so offensive that it should prevent him from entering the HoF? I googled it and some clickbait article presented the following: 1. He posted a right wing boomer meme about transgender bathroom laws. 2. He made a nazi comparison by stating that 5-10% of Muslims are extremists and that in 1940 only 7% of Germans were Nazis. Ok, so we got more ******** boomer memes coming through. 3. He denied the theory of evolution in a debate with Keith Law. LOL 4. He defended the State of South Carolina flying the Confederate Flag. Seems crazy right now but ten years ago it was a pretty common position. This is probably the worst thing on the list so far. 5. He frequently criticized Hillary Clinton. 6. Claimed ESPN employs some of the biggest racists in sports. 7. Says he's not in the HoF because of his political beliefs. 8. Criticized Obama for not having a flag in his recreation of the Selma bridge march, while also seemingly giving the original 1965 marchers some credit for having tons of flags in their march? Looks like this list might be a little bit old. I know more recently he said that Adam Jones' story that he was called the N-word in Boston was ********. Boston is a racist hellhole but Adam Jones is also a huge drama queen. Not sure that one tops anything else on the list. So he's basically your average idiot boomer who is active on Facebook. That's not even close enough to keep him out of the HoF.

Either you have an endless budget or you need to fit on most of the deals you dish out. Welcome to the big boy club. Yeah, I mean it’s the market. Like I get if you don’t like a deal because of something before it’s signed, like say if you’re not confident in Lindor’s bat.. but if it’s just aging that’s the worry…they know full well about all that, it’s what the market is making them pay if they want the guy. I’m not even against the Jays refusing to do 10yr deals. I’m actually glad they don’t bc a dead $25m can really cause big problems for them. I don’t begrudge the big boy teams for being less risk adverse though You don’t see Friedman running LAD like the Rays lol
