Watching the Rays game and this is honestly just sad:

jaysblue thinks the Rays are a better playoff roster/team than Toronto and I cannot understand it. Their offense is mediocre AT BEST and they also are not a good defensive team.

It's not a good roster. If Baz and Gasnow were healthy they'd be a dangerous playoff team with those two and McClanahan, but I don't think either of them will pitch this year.

Do they provide the cane and dog, or is that your responsibility?

Application is in Braille, and it clearly states you must provide dog and cane.

I’m so happy for Joey Gallo. Got out of that s*** hole. Got a hard reset on his Season and is enjoying a great start for them. Good on the Dodgers for taking a chance on him as well. I hope the success continues.

so that's like the expected arb progression plus about $20M AAV for two FA years I guess

Rays have won two games already against the Yankees and are ahead of the Blue Jays in the Wildcard. So far they've played better than the Blue Jays based on the standings and like you said on paper their roster is mediocre. Though they still always manage to be a thorn in the side for the Blue Jays and in the AL East, even with a mediocre roster. On paper I take the Blue Jays roster, though my gut feeling inside says the Rays beat them in a 3-game Wildcard series, especially with the way the Blue Jays are playing right now. Rays have an edge in the rotation and bullpen IMO.

That's what great organizations do. They buy low and roll the dice on players with previous success. Gallo was a great under the radar pickup for them.

That "not good roster" is ahead of the Blue Jays in the standings though lmao. Even without Baz and Glasnow, McClanahan + Springs + Rasmussen + Kluber is a great rotation in the Postseason.

They ended up beating the Yankees. You gotta love Rays baseball!

I have no faith at all in Springs, Rasmussen, or Kluber as playoff starters.

Even with Kershaw and Buehler gone, being without May for the entire season and after trading Mitch White, it's very impressive how the Dodgers can still field a solid rotation one through five! They're a team built well for a 162 game season. This shows you how roster depth is important. Something the Blue Jays front office should focus on addressing in the offseason.

Dodgers current rotation:

Urias

Gonsolin

Anderson

Heaney

Pepiot

Those five are better than the Blue Jays right now IMO.

May is expected back very soon, and Danny Duffy likely will be back in September. I'm also shocked why they don't have Price stretched out a starter but like you said they might know something we don't.

For the Postseason, if they get Kershaw back, and along with May in top form, their rotation is fine. They can run a rotation of Urias, Gonsolin, Kershaw and May along with Heaney, Anderson, Duffy and Pepiot in the wings in case someone gets injured again.

Now lets talk about their lineup and bullpen depth :P

I don't buy most of this. Anderson is falling back to earth, Heaney's shoulders had been hurt twice already this year and he's throwing like 4 innings a start since returning. Gonsolin has never thrown this many innings and it's showing in his results. It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers handle this situation. So much depends on the health of Kershaw and a dominant return by May.

But yes, it turns out the highest spending team in baseball has lots of pitching depth - shocking. If Rogers gave our FO another $90M to spend, then I'm sure they'd have more depth too. That said - I bet the Dodgers FO is sweating a bit - worried they'll fall short in the playoffs again.

And what makes you have faith in Berrios, Stripling, White or Kikuchi? Or even Manoah who has never pitched in the Postseason before?

If Anderson was on the Blue Jays, you would be hailing him as the next great Pete Walker reclamation project. How about Manoah and his innings? Heaney is injury prone, though he's still been more effective than Kikuchi haha who isn't even lasting 4 innings.

Does the Dodgers highest payroll have anything to do with their pitching depth? Has more to do with their main roster pieces. Outside of Kershaw, the rest of the starters like Urias, Buehler, May, Gonsolin, Anderson and Healey aren't costing a lot at all. Price is a different story since they took on his bad contract to get Betts, but he isn't even in the conversation for pitching depth.

Dodgers could very well fall short in the Postseason again. Teams like the Mets and Braves in the NL could pose a challenge for them. Though the Dodgers have built a roster perfect for 162 games and they should be in a good position to go far into the Postseason if Kershaw gets back and May returns to elite form.

Nothing? For everyone but Manoah anyway.

AA went to the Dodgers to become smart and now he's combining it with his elite salesman skills and he is a juggernaut.

Dodgers rotation depth is insane. I don’t know how you could argue otherwise:

Buehler

Bauer

Kershaw

Urias

May

Gonsolin

Anderson

Heaney

Pepiot

Miller

Stone

Their 8th best starter would be the the Jays 3rd best starter.

Yeah seriously. If Vlad was on the Braves, he’d probably already be extended for below market value by now.

Feel legitimately bad for Michael Harris

I understand getting the millions immediately and guaranteeing this amount of money is life changing for anybody BUT he was on track to be a free agent at 28 and if he was healthy and productive he could have bargained for a mega-contract, because he looks really damn good.

Instead the Braves will control him into his 30s. There is a chance that he declines during those option years and limps into eventual free agency as a year to year veteran player...

There is a chance he left $200M+ on the table here.

So do the Braves have the 3 most team-friendly extensions in baseball now? Not sure how AA, and pretty much only AA, is able to get these contracts done.

Anthopoulos is playing 4D chess at this point in his career

If he was still in Toronto the team would be 5 games up on the Yanks right now.

Yeah if every team were doing this then I’d say it’s an issue with the agents or the players themselves but the Braves are basically the only team doing this on a consistent basis. Players hand over their primes to AA for less than market value without blinking. AA may have inherited a gold mine but he put his personal stamp on it real quick.

Meanwhile waiting for the first young player the Jays can extend to that type of deal.
