Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 Seattle's top player, should be expected He is not their top player...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 He is not their top player... No? He's the WAR co-leader in fewer games, with 19 steals, and plays CF. Tell me who I'm missing.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 Damn thought Tellez pulled the Jay game out of a hat. Had him benched for N. Lowe who has been solid

Offensively France has a higher wRC +, wOBA, OBP, AVG, xWOBa and they are tied in WAR. However, remember WAR can be deceptive. David Ortiz always had waaaaay less WAR then other far inferior players..

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 You are wrong in assessing France > J-Rod 1. I thought this is in the context of who from Seattle should represent at the All Star game. 2. I am not assessing this as who do I want as my keystone player for the next 10 years or who I want on my rebuilding Dynasty team. You have a lot of Fantasy shares in JRod and use this board to pump up your investments, I get it. Full disclosure I am heavly invested in France and would do the same. However, if Seattle gets one player to represent at the All- Star game this year, by what metric are you going to tell France to stay home and send JRod?

Papi WAR was depressed because he provided nil defensive value. WAR is the best measure of a player's value to the team. With the latest tater, J-Rod has the highest WAR of any Mariner, and in addition has 19 steals that WAR does not account for. That creates a pretty clear separation from France. After his initial rookie struggles, J-Rod has a 155 wRC+ since May 1. There's really no question that he is the best Seattle MLB'er going forward.

His offensive value on Fangraphs is 19.8 to 10.7 for JRod.. France just gets killed on the defensive side vs a CF and he is still basically tied for WAR. Regardless, I am not going to dispute your last sentence saying JRod is the better player going FWD.. I am going to stick to my assertion that if the Mariners get one player to represent them at the 2022 All Star game, it should be France, all helium etc aside.

Ortiz was so bad at 1B they refused to DH guys like Manny Ramirez and Hanley Ramirez -- among two of the worst defensive outfielders in MLB history. That's crazy when you think about it.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2022 Posted June 29, 2022 The ultra-rare “4th out rule” happened today in the Washington-Pittsburgh game. Brief synopsis, runners on 2nd and 3rd for Pittsburgh, 1 out. Hitter lines out to Josh Bell, both runners had gone on contact. Bell throws to third, and the 3b tags the runner who had run from second out for a double play, then also touches third, but the runner from 3rd had scored already. So…because he tagged the runner from 2nd for the third out, and THEN touched third without appealing that the runner left early(because there was 3 outs already, they didn’t think to do it) before they left the field, the run counts. Had they appealed to the ump the runner from third left early and tagged 3b first, and then tagged the runner from second, the run wouldn’t have scored. Had they appealed to the ump immediately after tagging the runner and touching 3b, run wouldn’t have scored. f*** I love baseball.

I agree with everything in this post, but France is on the IL and highly unlikely to play in that game regardless. One of their rookie arms might be selected as well. I like what they're doing in Seattle.

If they are more or less the same in value to date, isn't J. Rod just the more exciting player for fans to watch? He's more of an All Star in that sense. Superstar prospect, more homers and steals, doing exciting things.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 (edited) Pena and Alvarez just collided in LF... Pena seems okay, Alvarez, not so much. Pena got rekt he just came off the IL too This isn't looking good for the Stros. From what I've heard Alvarez had already been sent home before the game even ended to be evaluated and Pena might be heading back to the IL too. Costly mistake. Edited June 30, 2022 by Spanky99
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Holy f*** - Alvarez needs to DH. You can't have him running in the OF.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Who the f*** is taking him for granted? I think there are lots of baseball fans who take him for granted. I don't think people appreciate just how good Trout and Ohtani are. I think people are naturally drawn to flashy guys like Jazz Chisholm, Tatis, Acuna, etc. more.

I'm not so sure about that, Ohtani had plenty of press all last season, VGJ was an afterthought and he just simply raked. Passan didn't need to add to that tweet.
