Anyone see this play from yesterday between Texas/Colorado?

https://streamable.com/2ojed3

Call was overturned and ruled an illegal slide at 2nd, Rox were given both outs and won the game.

Kinda ******** IMO. The slide wasn’t dirty and he slid into the bag… seems like umpires still aren’t sure how to implement this rule.

What i’ve gathered is basically the 2nd baseman can purposely make a s***** throw and then the call will likely be overturned for an illegal slide.

The Yankees next year will be paying $94.5m to Stanton, Donaldson, Rizzo, DJ, and Hicks. They have no real starting catcher. Judge and Gallo are free agents. Not looking good for them.

If Rizzo rakes this year in Yankee stadium he might be gone. He has a player option, 16M.

You're also missing Cole's 36M. Since the beginning of June last year he has a 4.15 era. Is he going to be worth his contract without the aid of sticky stuff?

That looks to me like it was an illegal takeout slide as the runner didn't appear to make any effort to maintain contact with the base.

Idk man the rule is all f***ed. We’ve seen worse slides NOT called interference.

Looking at the big DP Espy and Bo made yesterday, I wonder if they would have called an illegal slide on Hicks if Bo had thrown the ball away.

That rule sucks. I understand not having guys slide outside the base path and into the middle infielder coming off the bag, but thats a clean play IMO

I agree

Garver made no attempt to maintain contact with the bag and it looks like he made an effort to 'pop up' and further interfere with the 2nd baseman (typically a pop up slide happens when you slide into the bag, which stops your momentum....in this case, Garver slides over the bag, so he shouldn't naturally pop up). He also doesn't slide right into 2nd as it's clear he's trying to slide into the 2nd baseman, while 'catching' the bag on the way by. I believe he went into 2nd with the intent of interfering with the 2nd baseman and support that ruling.

That said - this is definitely a borderline call and rules that have interpretation in them will also have that grey area where people argue both ways. No different then that right handed batter running to first on a bunt up the 1st base line and whether he's in the base path or not.

At the end of the day, this rule was the right call by MLB and I personally think it's improved the game. I can live with people bitching about a borderline call here or there (and really - how many calls have been questioned by this board over the past 2 years? Not many at all IMO).

Without that rule - there's a good chance that Bo doesn't even attempt that throw yesterday - and if he does, he might now be on the 60 day DL as it looked like a carbon copy of the Utley/Tejada play.

Yeah im not arguing the rule should be tossed or anything, just that there should be a more consistent enforcement.

Seems like the play is 50/50 depending on whoever the replay umpires happen to be on any given day

The Rule: "When sliding into a base in an attempt to break up a double play, a runner has to make a "bona fide slide." Such is defined as the runner making contact with the ground before reaching the base, being able to reach the base with a hand or foot, being able to remain on the base at the completion of the slide (except at home plate) and not changing his path for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder. The slide rule prohibits runners from using a "roll block" or attempting to initiate contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking his leg above the fielder's knee, throwing his arm or his upper body or grabbing the fielder. When a violation of the slide rule occurs, the offending runner and the batter-runner will be called out."

Looking at the rule Garver both over slide the bag and threw his upper body at the fielder.

I think what likely happened here is Garver went in there hard, knowing he was gonna be out and intentionally slid to the fielder side of second, but realized a bit late he was going too far and tried to hold himself up, and failed.

I dont think there was intent to contact the fielder, but he defitnitely failed to try and maintain contact with the base with his slide. He then also ended up grabbing the fielder just as his throwing motion was over. So while it wasn't a dirty slide, it was against the rule as written.

Good application of an okay rule. I don't even think it's that borderline - he's like a foot off the base in the slow-mo and the bulk of his body is sliding away from the bag to mess up the fielder and he is keeping his upper body upright to increase the interference.

In short, f*** Texas.

Anyone else notice that MLB.tv routinely falls behind the actual live feed because they run longer commercials than the actual broadcast?

Is that why? I have noticed it runs behind.

I don’t think that’s the reason, but yeah its always at least 30 seconds behind. That seems to be the case with most streams though no?

The issue is that it falls behind itself. If you hit live to catch it up, it will go forward. Then if you do it again a couple innings later it will jump you ahead a half inning again.

He’s got plenty of Mustard in that arm! Not quite enough with the bat.

Yup. 98 mph and Naquin took him yard.

Then he gets a flyout and strikes out Votto on 3 pitches. Cant tell how the slider looks as Im just radio scouting but 98mph fastball to 85mph slider is pretty good separation

Pretty good depth actually. Fastball looks pretty straight though.

Great velo on the fastball but it's pretty straight. The HR was right down the middle with no movement. His slider is pretty good tho.

No one's going to tell me that the Grichuk trade was good for us and I'm not even a huge fan of his.
