I hate the Braves. Lucky World Series win and then they turn around and can't find cash for a Braves legend like Freeman? I hope the Mets and Phillies (also two trash orgs IMO) smash them this year.

What do you think now, with 8 years of Olson?

good thing you put your money where your mouth is and stuck with it in all your dynasty leagues right

The dynasty leagues were free

Not only does Atlanta have a new 1B in Matt Olson, it’s going to have him for a long, long time. Olson and the Braves have agreed on an eight-year, $168 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Atlanta locks up the hometown kid two years before he was due to hit the market.

That's a really good deal.

Probably not a great thing, when Fernando Tatis was asked when his motorcycle accident happened, he responded, 'which one.'

lol... my gosh!

Olson is also several years younger (even if we compare the free agency age)

Almost forgot that prospect haul they had to give up.

The extension makes it better, and you're getting the prime of Olson vs. the hypothetical down years of Freddie, but I think there's a case to be made that shelling out $180M to retain Freeman & keeping those prospects would've been the way to go still. Maybe it's me thinking that Freeman will actually age gracefully & he's not going to cost that much more than the total guarantee to Olson (both pts could be wrong), but it's close.

Exactly - how does one leave that out? The Braves now get Olson's age 30-35 years instead of Freeman's age 32-37 years. Then again - Freeman has a better track record.

Craig Goldstein left it out because he's a disingenuous hack

Astros plan to make new offer to free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa shortly, source tells @TheAthletic. His potential return is creating buzz in camp. “Players can’t stop talking about it,” one source said.

Incredible stuff here from Ken - I was convinced that adding another player in return would make Cinny's return even shittier...

Seeing as it's a PTBNL likely one of Ford/Arroyo or Morales from the past draft. Still not a great return, they best hope it's Ford. :P

What if it was a guy with a bad contract?

What's the closest comp for Freeman, a little worse than Votto probably? Votto was still mega elite from 32 onwards.

comp in what sense?

plenty of elite 1B types have cratered

f***, Miggy fell off a cliff at 34

TBH Votto seems like an *******.

Votto and I went to the same High School. Not at the same time though. Perhaps that school made *******s out of both of us.

So who else had 'Pirates sign Dan Vogelbach' as the biggest transaction of the day?

Its 3:30pm… and did you miss the Olson extension?

Most transactions seem to get done during working hours. I just think we all expected a bit more to happen, it was a bit of a joke.

I think a comp in terms attributes, statcast, athleticism.

So.. I'd say lefty, BB/K acumen, top 2% xwoba, reasonable athleticism (not a fatass).

Actually looking at Miggy, how bad did his park/athleticism destroy his numbers. 93 mph exit velo in 2020.

I looked at the top 1B in both 2000 and 2010 and a LOT of them fall off a cliff at some point around 33, 34 years old. Guys like Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez, Miggy, Fielder, Tex, Konerko, Helton, Giambi, Delgado, Olerud...

... almost none of them are guys you would have wanted on a big contract for their mid-late 30s. Most gave their teams a bunch of negative WAR seasons and maybe a couple league average years.

I don't think many people, even certain SABR people, give age effects the appropriate consideration. They can make all the difference. When it's a 32 year old vs a 27 year old like Freeman and Olson.... I mean history tells us that Freeman may have 1 or 2 more good years before he sucks and Olson should be good for most of his contract.

Votto is weird. He maintained all of his skills at 32 and 33, then his power fell off a cliff at 34,35, and 36. Then at 37 he decided to sell out a bit for power and became elite again.

Votto is a hall of famer for that career transformation alone, lol

he is so freakishly good. it's insane.

And now you have a shrine for Votto in your mom's basement... the center piece: a piece of Votto's chewed-up gum you found under a desk... the teeth marks are distinctly Votto-like you say.

What a legend. Such a smart player.

That's a significantly better deal for Atlanta in the long run than Freddie Freeman would've been.

Massive win for AA.

So did he collect hugely impactful embarrassing dirt on Albies, Acuna Jr and Olson before negotiating their extensions or something??

... Joking aside, it's clearly the thing he is absolutely best at

Braves so cheap that not only can they not afford to bring back their own legends but they can't even hire a graphic design team to change the uniforms of their FA signings.

Wow I had completely forgotten that Robinson Cano is still a Met.

I wonder what he'll be like this season? Maybe the roided out 2020 will carry over.

The Yankees are in agreement on a deal with free-agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo

Well that takes them out of Freeman you would think.

Was just about to post this. So I guess they're out from the Freeman sweepstakes.
