March 15, 2022 - Mediation begins

Today, the University of Lethbridge and the University of Lethbridge Faculty Association (ULFA) begin a new mediation effort.

Mediation is scheduled for multiple dates this week, and we are hopeful it will lead to a resolution that invites students and faculty back to class soon.

The University remains committed to settling an agreement that respects the value of our faculty, honours our responsibilities to students, and protects the University’s fundamental need for financial stability and long-term sustainability.

We will keep students and other stakeholders informed about mediation updates as they become available.

It's probably just exhausting being there. As a fan I feel drained after watching a 5+ hour marathon game. Add in all the other issues you cite and I'm not surprised the players don't like them.

If it's implemented in the 11th or 12th as noted, I have no problem with it, I'd prefer the 12th. I mean there's only so much pitching to throw out there.

How is NHL overtime any better than what MLB is trying to implement? First team to score wins the game… that’s not how Hockey is played.

If hockey implemented a ghost runner type scenario it would be something like, OT starts with everyone inside the blueline except for one player that has the puck at center ice and gets to start the overtime with a breakaway.

No but a shoot out is what i compare the ghost runner to. I hate that a hockey game is decided by a skills competition but it gets you a winner.

shoot out in hockey would be more the same to a HR derby.

the ghost runner comp is already in place in the NHL with 3 on 3. It's not the perfect apples to apples but it's designed to accomplish the same thing, someone gets a goal in less than 5 minutes.

Does anyone want ties in baseball? There's never been an issue with how baseball games are decided. It's worked extraordinarily well for over 100 years.

Might as well just have a home run hitting contest to decide the game.

If baseball is dead-set on ending games early I think rather than the runner on 2nd rule, I would prefer something like this:

If the game is tied after 12 innings the team with the most base hits is awarded the victory. If tied in hits, the team with the most players reaching first base for any reason wins. If tied there too, you just get more granular (least amount of pitches thrown, highest strike percentage, I dunno). And the rulebook would probably have a coin flip at the end that would never be used.

Why? No stupid on the field stuff and if hits are the first tiebreaker it kind of incentivizes putting the ball in play at all times.

I dunno.

It's better than a ghost runner. At least you have tie breakers based on things that actually happened throughout the course of the game. Not a manufactured head start.

It's undoubtedly better than a Manfred Man on second base.

To be fair though...if you want to compare it to NHL 3-on-3 OT, what about removing 1 outfielder on the defensive side of things for extra innings. I was thinking about removing an infielder too but you'd probably have 20 run innings if you did that.

Thanks for framing this better than I could. I agree.

I absolutely HATE the ghost runner.

If a team can lose a game by giving up nothing but a bloop single, does the "win" still have any actual value?

Forget that. With the ghost runner you don't even need the bloop. Two ground balls can lose you the game.

I mean...both teams get a chance to hit. If 2 ground balls lose you the game, then hit better. It's that simple.
