@EvanDrellich MLB has arrived to hear the MLBPA’s latest proposal, and thus another collective bargaining meeting begins

1:18 PM

@EvanDrellich The meeting between MLB and the MLBPA has ended.

This tells us the meeting was not about core economic issues.

I like this. Having the top team advance gives them an advatnage to set their rotations up perfectly, and having the next two division winners pick their opponents will add a nice layer of drama and motivation to the teams getting picked.

The team with the bye can celebrate for several days. Big advantage to the other teams.

tongue may be in cheek there but it actually could be a detriment to the hitters to have 4+ days off in a row. timing could be way off for the first couple of games.

I think the "choose your opponent" feature is great. No other sport does it, so it would be unique to baseball, and I think in today's clickbait obsessed world it would be a pretty good marketing tool to add drama to the Wild Card round. Of course, they'd have to do it properly. Have a 30 minute special on ESPN where fans get to see the teams choose their opponent live. Have a player representative from each team, preferably the star player, show up on a split screen, and then let that rep announce which team is chosen as the opponent. Might be too gimmicky for some, but I like it. I think with the way bullpens are used in playoff rounds nowadays, a bye into the DS is a real incentive since teams can rest their relievers rather than having to use them excessively to win a 3 game series prior to it.

The only drawback is it would allow some mediocre teams into the playoffs, and devalue the long regular season. Ex. the exciting AL Wild Card race last year would have been boring since all 4 of Boston, New York, Toronto, and Seattle would have made it rather than only two of them. They might want to consider shortening the regular season in addition to this change, but it all comes down to money in the end.

19 minute meeting? It takes me longer to scratch my crotch.

Have seen it in other sports (e.g. hockey) where a team that gets a bye comes out flat when it is time to play again.

Re: your 2nd paragraph. With more playoff spots we might see more teams "going for it" so the boring scenario may not actually happen too often. More likely, there will be more excitement, with more movement of teams in and out of the playoff grid along with the races to get the benefit of being a division winner.

If they are sincere about meeting everyday next week and both sides look at the 2/28 deadline in the same way, then maybe a deal to save the regular season is possible. I won’t hold my breath though.

This will be ironed out before the end of the month and we'll be watching glorious, beautiful regular season baseball by March 31st.

Good for the players, this is likely the largest piece of leverage that they have available to them to get MLB ownership to actually bargain in good faith instead of trying to break the union.

Guaranteed. A deal will come together very quickly once we move closer to the end of the month. It is painful to watch from the sidelines but both sides know they can't f*** this up and drag it out.

We had a flurry of moves before the lockout, and massive period of zero activity and now we will again have a massive flurry of moves to finish before the season starts. I kinda like it to be honest.

Starting ST on March 5-6 would make sense with a 2/28 deadline to get a CBA done.

Of course, this assumes a CBA will get done by 2/28, and I'm not as confident about that.

Bruce Meyer is the death of all good things. They counter a proposal by asking for more arbitration bonus pool money than they asked for before. If you go and try and buy a house and offer 950K and it gets turned down, you're probably going to get turned if you lower your offer and ask for 925 the following week.

Now they're saying no expanded playoffs if we don't play a full season. Let's reject more revenue that will ultimately allow for more money to be paid to players and then this childish release.

Both sides need to quit the public PR ********. We're sick of both sides. Sit in a room, act like adults and don't come out until you have a deal.

1994–95 Major League Baseball strike called and has some other words.

That ain't happening, man.

I hope your right man. Up until Dec 1 things were really fun. Lots of early signings and news. Once the lockout hit my mind just turned baseball off. I've hardly paid attention or given thought to roster construction free agents etc. If this 2 group of clowns somehow close a deal we have spring training starting ASAP and ton of players to sign ASAP. It would be fun few days.

Hopefully the owners are ready for good faith bargaining. They've enjoyed some savings during the lockout, but that will turn to looses if they don't get a deal soon.

How much have they really saved? They still have to keep up the facilities and admin/coaching staffs. I doubt they furloughed those guys. Not to mention the insane legal fees they’re prob racking up. Any ST internal housing is prob already bought and paid for, as well as catering contracts. You think they’ll be like “ok, ST training starts next week so let’s find stuff”

No idea, but there would be some.

I don’t think it’s the meager savings in the off-season that changes anything. What’s about to change is the money they won’t be making from the new TV deals starting this year, the new ad revenues from player uniforms, the new gambling revenue and the expanded playoff revenues the players have said will be nixed if a full season doesn’t happen.

The owners will give at some point this time around, there’s too much new money they’re giving up on if they don’t
