I'm fine with letting him walk for that deal

Me too...although if we had signed him for that deal, I'm not sure take too much issue with it. I'd rather we put all our eggs in a bigger basket. The problem is there are so many buyers out there unlike last year. Will we land one of the bigger fish?

Jon tells us on @FAN590 the Jays' 3-year offer was in the AAV range of Cardinals, likely mid-30s total. 4th year was, of course, the difference.

The #BlueJays offered Steven Matz a 3-year contract, source says. He is now in agreement with the #STLCards on a 4-year deal, as @JeffPassan has reported. @MLBNetwork @MLB

I’m not happy this morning . I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent.I guess words and promises don’t matter.

Mets GM Billy Eppler told Matz’s agent Rob Martin he was upset. Mets thought they’d have a final chance and didn’t get it. Word from Matz camp is he had a late change of heart,

wondered what he meant by "promises don't matter"? Did the Mets have a deal with Matz or his agent that he would re-sign back with the Mets before he was dealt here?

I think Matz’ Agent promised the Mets they would give them the final chance to match his best offer, but I guess they didn’t

Boohoo, Billionaire didn’t get the shiny new toy he wanted.

I know it was a different GM, but this is a guy they traded away for scraps a year ago. Just because he came up in the org, it doesn't mean he owes them anything.

Good for Matz. I wouldn't have gone 4 years on him, so glad he went elsewhere.

1/Just talked to Steve Cohen on the phone. He was angered that the Mets were pursued by Matz and his agent -- not vice versa -- and told the NYM were Matz's first choice, that there was unfinished business with the NYM and he wanted to return.

3/I can’t imagine what the agent was thinking in the context of how they reached out to us and the reasons they wanted to come back. I have ever had an agent do that before with me.”

Steve Cohen also said: “Steve (Matz) was a good Met when he was here. I only wish him well. This was about the interaction with the agent.”

Maybe Matz is a spiteful person and did it purposely to the Mets for trading him for scraps lol

The Mets should've been angry for only being able to get scraps for Matz.

I'm not very upset about this. Matz was good but I wouldn't want him for 4 years. 2/3 year deal tops but why not go after the guaranteed money and years. Good for him. Steve Cohen's an idiot and I hope the Mets suck as long as he's there.

I don't think it has anything to do with if he came up in the Mets org. I think it is about your word as a person to circle back with someone. Heck, even in Fantasy if you tell a guy you will circle back before you accept something you should do it. Let alone in professional baseball. At least tell the guy you have no chance, sorry and this is what is happening.

I think this will be noted by the other 29 GMs when dealing with this agent. (Well maybe apart from the Cardinals GM, but it could happen to him next time if this is the agents character.)

Meh, you are hearing one side. I am sure the agent has his/her own version of what went down.

Funny how this type of s*** always happens to this new owner Cohen. You can made a deduction from that.

Well, the third-person report said Matz had a change of heart, so that prob confirms it to a certain extent. You’d think this type of situation wouldn’t be so uncommon with mlb and Hollywood agents, but apparently Cohen is just learning this and also most people wouldn’t make it public.

It’s also kind of surprising with his Wall St background that he would expect so much honor is business dealings

What the f*** is he on about? So just because Matz’ agent reached out to the Mets expressing interest in coming back, means they have to take whatever deal is offered? I don’t understand the problem here, other than Cohen is a twat

The agent isn't doing anything without Matz's okay. Matz is the one who didn't want to see what the Mets' counter offer would be.

Classy response that makes Cohen look like a rich cry baby.

Jesus f*** Matz is under no obligation to take the highest bid anyway. Matz decided to take the Cards offer, regardless of any Mets new offer, case closed.

If Cohen really wanted Matz, he should have ponied up in the first place instead of trying to just beat out whatever other offers are out there. That's also known as nickel and diming.

Even if Cohen offered 5 years for 60 million, like you said Matz is under no obligation to sign with any particular team. Maybe his wife has family near St. Louis or something. Maybe he loves the food there. It doesn’t f***ing matter where he signs, its his choice.

If Matz decides he wants to sign with the Cards there's no point in the agent checking back with the Mets before the deal is signed. The decision to sign with who and where is up to Matz. Maybe when the agent was talking with the Mets originally St Louis hadn't even reached out yet. And who's to say the agent wasn't going to reach out to the Mets GM today to explain the circumstances.

And what if the Cards informed Matz that they offered similar deals to a couple other pitchers, and first to accept would get the deal? Do you think that Matz' agent is going to wait around to hear back from the Mets. If the Mets really wanted him they would have made him an offer.
