Pirates really killed this draft. First 4 picks were essentially ranked as 1st-round calibre talents

2. Anthony Solometo ($2.8M signing bonus)

3. Lonnie White Jr. (TBD signing bonus)

4. Bubba Chandler ($3M signing bonus)

 

Really maximized that pool bonus well. Cherington and Sander have done an excellent job restocking that farm with the Taillon, Bell, Marte, and Musgrove trades too in essentially a year. Might be the #1 system soon enough.

I'm sure the front office had a decent idea of if they could get these guys within their budget but I'll still be surprised when Bucknam and Palmegiani sign for those amounts. Like, I'm expecting and hoping for it to happen but I also know that the amount the Jays can pay these guys is like the bare minimum they could get in a future draft even if they decided to go to school. The risk here is super low, relatively, so the only real reasons I can see them signing for is that they're either super passionate for baseball and want to get their pro careers started or they feel they aren't good enough to maintain their stock or improve on it over the course of another year or two.

It looks like we got 17th round pick LHP Cooper Benson signed as well for $125,000 according to the MLB Draft Tracker. He was a draft-eligible Sophomore (only eligible because the draft got pushed to July this year) who blew his elbow out after one start I believe. He should be one to watch as I believe he could have gone much higher had he not been injured.

I'm honestly surprised they let Rocker go. I feel with a talent of that caliber, the chance you can rehab/fix whatever you found in his arm is still higher than a standard #11 pick in most years.

I feel like these stories usually end up where the guy needs TJ like 2 months later. If they’re going to just waste a development year+, may as well try again in a year. Not like Rocker is generational. He obviously slipped on draft day without even the elbow thing known

He can go back to Vanderbilt for a year. Or he can leave college and play independent / unaffiliated baseball. But either way he's subject to the 2022 draft, I think.

Apparently he's not planning on going back to Vanderbilt. This is worse for him than it is for the Mets. Remember that he turned down 1st round money out of HS and now he's left unsigned again. It sucks that it worked out this way for him, but he's slipping into dangerous territory.

He can work out on his own, go to independent league, go back to school, and be eligible for 2022 draft.

 

Or he could take the Carter Stewart route and go to Japan or Korea, but would not become a free agent eligible to sign with any MLB team for 6 years.

His arm would have still blown out, but at least he could have been paid first. Rocker's career goal was to reach MLB. He could have done that out of HS. Now he has an education that he may or may not have even cared about and it cost him 3-4 years of his pro career and millions of dollars in the process. Hitters choosing to go to college is more logical since the level of injury risk is much less, but for a pitcher to do it, especially when they could have conceivably gotten 1st round money out of HS, is a massive risk.

Even with TJS, he'd probably be faster to the league than whoever they pick #11 next year.

 

And Rocker's going to have literally no leverage next year and would have benefited from rehabbing in a world-class major league facility.

 

This move is puzzling and hurts both parties.

 

It just sounds like the Mets found something in the physical, lowballed him, and Rocker's camp refused to take the pay cut out of spite/anger.

 

But whatever the Mets' lowball offer was, it was probably still better than what he'll make next time without all the added risk.
