RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 It's not... But as a general rule, they only have so much to spend. They're not one of the organization's that will exceed their budget and bury their mistakes. Money will always be a factor. IIRC Shatkins has been on record saying that they carry some room in the budget for deadline acquisitions every year. Also i remember reading that when Kirby went down that the way the contract boosters were written in (saves, innings pitched etc) that they dont count against the budget either so they have a little bit more wiggle room there. I think we could take on some substantial salary because of all that.

We're taking on a little less than 6 mil at the deadline. This really is nothing for Rogers. It's going to take greater prospect capital to get Rodriguez. I get that he has a couple years of control, but Kimbrel is the better player and might be the dynamic piece that could really help this year. It's only costing money. We save the prospects.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Don't want to see the Jays give up significant pieces for rentals. Try to bolster the team, and especially the bullpen for now and the future. That's what's nice about the Cimber acquisition. Years of control. I'd like to see them nab Richard Rodriguez from the Pirates and Taylor Rogers from the Twins. 3.5 years of control and 1.5 years of control.

I think the Pirates will ask a ton for him. Honestly I want no part of him. I would love to get Rogers though.

The nice thing about rentals is that you can sometimes get good ones with C grade assets...

Kimbrel is the perfect piece. He's expensive enough that it takes some teams like A's or even the Sox who want to keep under the tax out of it. We just have to convince the suits upstairs to spend the money.

Fair enough, but you have to wonder if the cost would be worth it to make sure the bullpen has more legit depth in 2022 (and beyond), after watching the bullpen f*** things up royally for this team over the last month and a half. They should literally be 1-2 games out of 1st in the AL east right now instead of 8.5. But sure, if Kimbrell can be had for cheap he can probably help the Jays go on a run this season.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Kimbrel has a vesting option. You'd want to be pretty sure it will not vest if acquiring him.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Kimbrel has a vesting option. You'd want to be pretty sure it will not vest if acquiring him. I know. I was trying to calculate that. I think he needs 30 or 31 more appearances. You could obviously manipulate it. He's close to being on track for the option. I don't know why players get these types of options. They're going to complain when they shockingly fall 2 games short of the vesting option.

Players with vesting options complain about manipulation when they're benched--even when they're having terrible seasons. If you manipulate an elite closer with a vesting option you're gonna hear about it for YEARS.

With the way Charlie uses his pen, I'm quite confident he'd hit the number.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Yes Time to start calling the Cubs for trades: -
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 It's crazy Brewers and Cubs were neck and neck just a few weeks ago
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 It's crazy Brewers and Cubs were neck and neck just a few weeks ago 11 W's in a row will do that bud. If Cubs and Reds can't make ground soon they'll be selling.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 11 W's in a row will do that bud. If Cubs and Reds can't make ground soon they'll be selling. Yeah. Cause no wild card is coming out of the NL Central either. It will be all NL West teams.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Yeah. Cause no wild card is coming out of the NL Central either. It will be all NL West teams. That's going to be a fun thing to watch, those 3 teams battling for the division pennant.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 That's going to be a fun thing to watch, those 3 teams battling for the division pennant. Think the Giants can hold up?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Think the Giants can hold up? Not likely, but they have a good chance. 81 games is a good sample size of what they are. 3rd highest run differential.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Think the Giants can hold up? I hate teams that throw a bunch of s*** in the oven and it comes out Beef Wellington.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Kyle Seager can't cost much at this point (DiPoto knows what they are). Would love him at 3rd with Espinal taking the occasional LHP matchup. Dickerson/Gurriel in LF and Biggio/Grichuk in RF. Teo to DH. Maybe pick up one of SEA's relievers at the same time. Seattle is garbage and they are punching above their weight class right in my opinion, but despite that they are still in the wild card hunt so are they going to sell?
Dummbo Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Trade Bichette. Move Semien back to short.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Trade Bichette. Move Semien back to short. I believe you have selected the correct name. ...but to be fair, I will allow you to make your case first.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Trade Bichette. Move Semien back to short. Well, you're not wrong about the Dummbo thing.
Davie Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 I would be willing to part with a top prospect + whatever is needed if we could get Bryant (with an extension). I must admit though i didnt realise he had an absolutely awful June at the plate. However if he makes it clear he wants to test free agency then I would avoid and look elsewhere.
keggy Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Trade Bichette. Move Semien back to short. Trade Guerrero for blue chip prospects. Play Tellez every day until he breaks out and then trade him for prospects. Our competitive window will be open until 2050. Edited July 5, 2021 by keggy
Dummbo Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Bichette is great, and it would hurt to lose him.. But his bat and "image" are what some teams would kill to acquire. Defensively? That's not what he's expected to bring, and we'd be fine losing him on that end, especially if it meant getting a pair of middle relievers and a journeyman in the vein of MacDonald
Dummbo Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 By middle relievers, I'm taking Plesac-Quantrill type stuff
Dummbo Verified Member Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Do you heonsely think if Bo was on DL for 6 weeks, it would have any significant impact on our ability to tread water at .500?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Do you heonsely think if Bo was on DL for 6 weeks, it would have any significant impact on our ability to tread water at .500? Yes He's on pace for a 5 WAR season And if Bo had missed 6 weeks in May/June it would have meant full playing time for Joe Panik And we're 4 games over 500 and rising, not treading water [/Feeding_trolls]
