5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Rowdy can definitely run into some cookies, but he has the longest swing and slowest hands that I've seen from a power hitter in quite some time. Not to mention his terrible plate discipline. What do the Jays see in him? A team needs someone who can produce at the 1B/DH position and Tellez just doesn't have the upside. He's the perfect player to go play in Korea. He reminds me of a Roberto Ramos type player.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 He's lost at the plate right now but be fair. He has had very good plate discipline at times in the past (2020 and in the minors) and has paired big raw power with contact ability. I'm not convinced he's a starter on a good team but he could make it and he could more likely be a good role player. If everyone is healthy in Toronto he could be on the bench and he's a nice guy to have on the bench.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted April 8, 2021 Author Posted April 8, 2021 You need guys who are versatile on the bench though. Not much use in having a one dimensional player who might be able to run into a few riding the pine in this day and age. And if you did have someone on the bench to play that role, it's always a veteran. A young guy like Rowdy would need playing time, but he's just not worth giving it to.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I still think he's a Justin Bour/Ji-Man Choi clone: left-handed hitting 1B with big power that will bleed runs on the bases and defensively. Good enough contribute 1.5-2 wins in his very best years if given every day time, but better deployed as a platoon 1B/DH or bench bat on a good team. Boring asset, but a legit end-of-roster MLB player on most teams.

The days of the bench being mostly veterans are sort of gone. Lots of teams give those spots or most of them to young, cheap players now.

But he was a huge reason we made the playoffs last year, and he's only played 5 games. I think he can turn it around.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Gurriel 1B, Vlad DH, Grichuk OF. In a serious game. Why not Grichuk OF, Teo DH, Vlad 1B? Vlads been pretty good at 1B with the exception of today's missed catch. We should be worried about Bo at SS more than any other defensive position thus far and I'm saying that as someone who had minimal faith Biggio could handle 3B.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 This The SSS reactions are puke worthy, I just read the GDT and holy f***, what a shitshow.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Gurriel is a bigger target (6'4") and definitely has better infield actions. You can shift more aggressively because he'll cover more ground. I don't know who's a better OF between Teo and Gurriel. I feel like Teo is faster and has a better arm but Gurriel is not s***. Of course, this all depends on if Grichuk hits. Ya it would be great to have an athlete at all positions but I don't think we're gonna push Vladdy off 1st. Gurriel had issues with his routes but still happened to make his catches while Teo was lazy as hell on more than a few plays last year. I'd give the speed advantage to Gurriel. Both have great arms but I'd give the edge to Gurriel on this too. Just my thoughts.

Still very early so I'm not panicking yet but it's something we should monitor. Being worried about them defensively is very valid. None of these guys came up with the belief they'd be great at their positions defensively. Biggio has done better than I expected at 3B so I'll give him credit there but Bo has been bad. Almost every game there's a play he doesn't make that a good SS should. Let's see how it goes with more reps though.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I am jumping in too. Must admit. We are only 6 games in but not too many Jays have looked great defensively. And this is a carry over from last year. Even Siemen didn't look impressive at SS today. Vladdy over his 6-7 games at 1st base have made a handful of plays that make you wonder. 1st base is pretty easy to play. This should not be. He is not natural on D in any way. I really wish he played 1st in winter ball. Justin Smoak he ain't around the bag. Anyone who has watched games this year can already pick 4-5 plays from memory where he just messed up. He clearly cost the team a run today not making a routine play. Bichette is a below average defensive SS. Hope time proves me wrong. He would be a helluva 2nd base or 3rd baseman though. Biggio is not a worry at 3rd for me. Springer will help big time when he is activated and will be the Jays best defensive player. Still a defensive work in progress IMO.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 He started like s*** last year too. Dumb thread.

These are players in their early 20's ffs. Bichette has HALF a season of MLB experience. 82 GAMES! Most of these players are on occasion going to make plays that cost the team runs. I don't even...figure your s*** out man...
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 The SSS reactions are puke worthy, I just read the GDT and holy f***, what a shitshow. Yeah.. Last year they looked awful for 10 or 15 games, then went on a streak scoring like 10 runs a game a bunch of times.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 He has an option remaining. Let's see if he's still in a slump when AAA season starts.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I suppose it's too late to merge this into the General Jays Discussion thread huh? C'mon people, not every brain dripping you have needs its own thread with a stupidly verbose title.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Rowdy is definitely pulling off some pitches. I felt pretty good when he had a slow start last year because I thought he was taking good swings. He's overswinging a bit right now. There's being late on a fast ball and there's missing a fastball. Yesterday he wasn't late, he just missed it. It was a pretty good pitch. It's tough for a guy to lay off on pitches at the top of the zone and take 95% swings and stay on the ball when all you want is a hit. Rowdy's ABs were a bit better the last game he started. He just needs a couple good games to get some confidence going, just like Teo, Cavan and Lourdes.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Maybe you are right, but all I see is huge overreactions based on 5 games...5 games in baseball is nothing lol. relax

The first month of the season is always the over reaction time. Some things you see are real, some things aren't. You won't really know for 6 weeks or more.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 (edited) Thread is an overreaction, but someone has to go when Springer is activated and it won't be Grichuk, Panik, Kirk or a bullpen arm, that's for sure. Edited April 8, 2021 by G-Snarls

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Milone > Roark We all want Roark gone but won't happen until we get at least Ray back of course Though TBH I'd take a bullpen game over another Roark start at this point
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
