I guess I'll be listening to Detroit Tigers radio out at camp this summer. Extremely disappointing news.

End of an era.

I have fond memories going back to the Championship days and before when I was a big fan in the late 80's early 90's listening to Tom Cheek (RIP) and Jerry Howarth on the radio when I couldn't catch it on TV. They described the play so succinctly as if you were watching or there at the stadium.

Sometimes when I was watching a game on TV, I'd turn off the TV sound and listen to Tom and Jerry instead. Whenever they replay Joe Carter's infamous HR, it was alway's with Tom Cheek's voice: "Touch 'em all, Joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life!" Listening to them was a comforting pastime, a joy, the sounds of summer.

Not all that surprised. How much do people really give a s*** about radio today? Does it generate much revenue?

There's a ton of nostalgia and history with radio broadcasts. I suspect this is a sign of the times though. It saddens me more than it probably should. Guess we'll have to see what it sounds like before getting too upset.

I typically just have it on in the background when I'm outside with the kids or doing some yard work. I'll tune in if I'm driving while a game is on too - but it's mostly just background noise, so I suspect it won't make much difference to me.

Canada is a country full of cottages, campsites, and commutes. Even in 2020+ so many baseball fans have times when they want to follow a game but all they have access to is radio.

Anyone who says this is just part of the changing media landscape is out of touch. For years I could pull up the MLB at bat app on my phone and listen to the ballgame radio feed while I was outside or on the treadmill. Rogers' cheap radio decision will ruin my smartphone app experience!

This is just a horrible decision, plain and simple, and I hope they reverse course at least before 2022.

All the people cying are bullshitting them selves. There will barely be a difference. Wilner and Wagner pretty s*** imo. And you will literally still be able to pull up the radio and LISTEN TO THE DAMN GAME.

Are they discontinuing the radio feed altogether though? I thought they were going to broadcast the TV stream over the radio using some kind of simulcast technology. If that's the case, your MLB app and your radio feed should still do the trick.

I grew up with Tom and Jerry too, and there's some nostalgia here that I'm missing as well, but I wasn't in love with the current radio crew. In fact, I'm quite a big Dan Shulman fan. I think he calls a great game. This might not end up being as bad as it first seems.

They should let the community take over. Give people the ability to make their own play-by-play and colour. Maybe they agree to give Rogers some free advertising during it or something.

I'm almost certain it will suck but I'll be happy if im wrong.

Calling a game on tv is very different than a radio call. They don't try to describe the game on TV, nor should they. You might even listen to the game on radio for like half an hour now before the score is mentioned - there's no score bug on the radio. I think it will suck and I love Shulman. Ben Wagner was decent though. Wilner sucks ass.

Ya i don't get it. People acting like they're cutting off radio all together. There shouldn't be too much of a difference.

I am very tech savvy and yet I still listened to the radio broadcasts all the time

Mowing the lawn

Running errands in the car

Hanging at the cottage

Doing dishes

Going for a walk or bike ride

On a long drive home from working out of town for the day

I rarely have three straight hours to sit in front of my laptop or TV to watch a whole game

This sucks

---------------------------------------------------

Edit: OK, wait. So we can still listen to the TV broadcast the way we would normally listen to the previous made-for-radio broadcast?

I usually use my phone and MLB AT BAT app and use the radio section.

The game is still on the radio, its just not a dedicated radio broadcast.

I dont think its going to be as big a deal as some think it is. Dan has experience calling games on the radio. He'll probably call the game as if it was just on the radio, which will come off as unnecessarily descriptive on TV, but still not a big deal.

I think there will be

Jerry Howarth describing things you can't see knowing you can't see them vs usual Buck is not the same

That said as long I can listen to a broadcast of the game it's not the end of the world

Hes been done for years

True

It's been just Wilner and Wagner wasn't it. I miss Howarth

Wonder if sportsnet will push Schulman/Buck to mention the score more often and describe things a bit better for the radio crowd. Wouldn’t surprise me if the television broadcast suffers because of this

Probably a positive for me. Over the last few years when I'm in my car, I would have prefered the audio of the tv broadcast than listening to Wilner act like it's every play is a walk off hr in game 7 of the world series. Ideally they'll hire a compentent replacement for Wilner and not scrap radio altogether but Wilner made the broadcast so unlistenable that this is an improvement!

If you have SiriusXM it might still be on one of the MLB channels

Sirius plays the home feed. I'm assuming since the Jays are being silly and not producing a radio broadcast that Jays games on Sirius will always be the other team's broadcast. I've listened to a most AL teams at some point over the years. It makes me appreciate ours more although I did quite enjoy Cleveland's calls. The Yankees broadcasts drive me crazy though.

Some games also have an away feed on a higher channel

I used to tune in to that sometimes to listen to Alan Ashby or John Stirling

The biggest thing the radio broadcast will suffer from is the existence of Pat Tabler on it. Dan is a pro so he'll make it tolerable and Buck can be fine as the colour guy, but Pat Tabler continuing his streak of adding zero to every broadcast he's a part of will make those people that used to switch from the TV feed to the radio really miss the dedicated radio broadcast.

I’ve pretty much had it with Buck even at colour. He just grumbles about the modern game all the time now. At least he doesn’t have as many chances to butcher names. Even names like Martinez!

I can't stand Buck either. It seemed like every inning last season he would complain about pitchers not using their fastball more.
