Official Spring Training 2021 GDT/discussion thread

What do you guys think about this (new?) rule about just ending innings if pitchers have reached their limit and managers having the ability to schedule 7 inning games or to cut them short if they want.

 

I mean I get it - they don't want to have to rush to get the next pitcher up early if their guy is struggling, but I wonder what it's like for the fans. They are back out buying tickets and supporting the league and now they've taken the sails out of it being a real baseball game. Blue Jays down 4-2 in the 6th with the bases loaded - uber prospect Austin Martin is at the plate....whoops - this pitcher sucks, just cancel the inning.

 

I've been to a ton of spring training games and I know you don't go to watch a 'good baseball' game. It's more about the atmosphere, autographs/meeting players and just enjoying a relaxing day. I don't think anyone really enjoys innings 8 and 9 anyway. I'm totally cool with the changes because I get it - but I have to wonder if some % of fans are like WTF is this? Why am I paying to go watch this? They have 183 people in camp - get someone warm and play the inning through.

I can understand why they allow managers to end innings, but honestly kinda sucks because running up the score is fun and watching Austin Martin demolish struggling pitcher is also fun.

101, 102, 103 MPH to start the game. He got lit up, but good to see him back on the mound.

 

 

 

I don't know who approved both teams wearing red jerseys, but they have done it a few days in a row now and it looks ridiculous.

I'm fine with the rule. It only runs until March 13th I believe. Easier way for pitchers to shake the rust off, and teams to control how many pitches a pitcher throws. It's easy to say they have plenty of pitchers, why not throw someone there to pitch. Well, each team already know who they're gonna pitch, everyone else has probably planned some kind of other workout for that day to go with their routine/timeline.

 

It's not ideal. But I'd prefer pitchers start the actual season healthy instead of overdoing it and blowing their arm out in a game on March 3rd that no one really gives a f*** about.

Would it be fun to see Pearson have to take a couple weeks off in spring training because he got a dead arm from throwing 40 pitches in his first inning of the season?

For people who were complaining about Sportsnet's spring training broadcasting decisions, the wonky rules may have been part of it.

 

Tough to send a production team down for a game without even knowing how long it will last, how many innings it will last, etc.

As someone watching on TV I don't really care, I would be annoyed if I paid to go to a spring training game and they played 5 to 7 innings instead of 9.

They can take him out after 25 pitches and have him rest for 20 minutes and then throw another 10 on the side...

 

Yeah, I guess this relies on having a bunch of fringe minor leaguers and journey men there who can fill in the other innings, and with the contracted minor leagues there are less of those... but that is another change for the worse.

It's just not the same. And then who would you put in to finish the inning? The other starter that's expecting to start the next innings and isn't warmed up? Or some other pitcher that didn't even expect to pitch that day that hasn't warmed up at all?

Dante Bichette on what he's seen so far: Vladdy looks great. Biggio looks like he's hitting the ball harder. Semien had this Dad voice, a very calming presence around the clubhouse. Springer brings a ton of energy. Rowdy is killing the ball. It's exciting. #ArashandStephen #Jays

Bichette says since he lives in Dunedin, he'll be around the team quite a bit during the early portion of the schedule. Says he'll be helping out with some of the Jays minor-leaguers and that he could do some international scouting down the road. #BlueJays #ArashandStephen

SWR with a three up three down first inning. Fell BEHIND DJL flied out to RF on a 2-0 fastball. Judge lined out on a 3-1 fastball. Hicks grounds out on 1-1 fastball. Probably nervous as f***, let's see if he finds his command next inning.

A three pitch strikeout in less than 37 seconds. Kid is aggressive and pitches fast. Pretty fearless considering he has the generation's best power hitter across him.
