For now, it looks like he's nearing a decision. Tweet from Martino on Mets getting serious: Tweet from Bauer's agent that they've narrowed their choice down to two teams: Edited February 5, 2021 by TwistedLogic
Ray Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I think it’ll be the Mets. 4 years $140M, with opt outs after years 2 and 3.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Hopefully soon. It feels like everything is stalled at this point until Bauer signs.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Go Jays!!! C'mon... more heavy lifting!
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 He's destined to be a Met. They need him more - their rotation depth is very weak. Carrasco and Stroman are paper, Syndergaard will be rehabbing for half the year, and nobody should expect Peterson or Lucchesi to be anything more than SP5 types in 2021. After DeGrom and those names, their minor league depth is dogshit. It's actually kind of insane that they traded Matz - it's like they are operating under the assumption that they don't need more than 5 or 6 SP. They need Bauer to devour like 230 innings.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Rooting for the Mets to get him. Dodgers don't need him.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 So curious what number Bauer gets. Part of me thinks Jays fans might get upset thinking we should have beaten that. I've expected him to go to the Mets as soon as I saw us get Matz.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 Crazy that this wasn't enough and that it's expected to be even more expensive. Bauer's getting a godfather offer.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Bauer is my favourite player in the league but I have no interest in him at that price.
Ray Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Bauer is my favourite player in the league but I have no interest in him at that price. I think you do a high AAV deal if it's for 2 or 3 years. The upside is obviously there. But I wouldn't go more than $30M/yr if the term is longer than 4 years.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 Bauer is my favourite player in the league but I have no interest in him at that price. Conversely, I f***ing hate Bauer, so I'm perfectly okay with his price being so high that I'm no longer torn on my dislike for him vs wanting his performance on the team.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Bauer is my favourite player in the league but I have no interest in him at that price. Yeah, those numbers are crazy, he's actually going to come close to his goal.

If that was the initial offer, I'm scared what the final number will be. 4/140 with opt outs would be pretty crazy to offer.
jerb Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Mets’ offer is 3 years, believed to be close to $100M. Ed Coleman of @WFAN660 reported 3 years, about $90M. Offer is even a bit higher. Opt-out likely after 1, as Ed said.

So basically Bauer's plan is to re-enter the market every year as long as he stays healthy and effective. Probably makes like 35M in 2021 and then does it all over again next year.

All it takes is one injury and he will lose most of his leverage. If he stays healthy, he will earn more this way but it's a gamble.

No one was offering 5/150 or anything nearly as ridiculous so 1 year deals with some security it is while he proves that he's really an elite pitcher.

I think if he has one more elite season... he might get that super contract he's hoping for.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Mets payroll might be insane next season.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I think if he has one more elite season... he might get that super contract he's hoping for. Yeah you’d think he’d be in line for 5/150 at that point.

Imagine getting Bauer @ 100M his UCL blows up 120 innings into the year. 100M for 120 innings and a Rehabbed Bauer for the entirety of the contract. Welp!
jerb Verified Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Before the Mets got serious in this endeavor they consulted with Francisco Lindor, who knows Bauer well from the Indians years, and Lindor said the magic words they needed to hear: “Good teammate”
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Done deal. Well.. if he wasn't coming here, glad he's staying in the National League. Mets had an amazing offseason assuming they extend Lindor soon.
Ray Verified Member Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 Done deal. Yeah, I'm gonna need Rosenthal or Passan to confirm it first, but if true, thank god. Good for the Mets. Now let's hope the other FA starters sign
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2021 Author Posted February 5, 2021 Knew I should have added a Boob Nightengale asterisk, lmao.
