He's a free agent after the season, so I can't see it being too painful. It'll probably be one or two guys on the 40 man plus someone else. Fisher and SRF perhaps.

He's a perfectly good #4 or #5 starter with the upside to be more. I like it. Hopefully we'll see that 37.8% home run rate drop down to where it should be.

Yeah, very little value going out. I'm fine with this I guess.

 

Matz might have a bit more upside than most of the free agent pitchers.

 

On one hand, I want to say that I would prefer to just cut two guys from the 40 and sign a free agent pitcher for $8M or whatever... but signing a solid SP to a pillow contract in the AL East is easier said than done. It's not where SP go to build value, obviously.

 

I trust the organization so much that I assume they have an idea of how to fix Matz.

Diaz and SRF were candidates to be removed from the 40-man anyway, so this is basically Winckowski for Matz. I'm fine with it.

Matz has good stuff, I'm sure some of our internal metrics see some upside in him.

SRF and Diaz were bubble 40 man roster players, and Winck isn't much of a prospect. The issue is Matz hasn't been good lately. Maybe they see something in him, or maybe they don't have that much left to spend, and found this to be cheaper/better than some of the FA options.
