Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 What's the prognosis on Correa? Is he a career SS or is there a chance he would sign somewhere with a SS already in place and move to 3B? The guy is only 3 years older than Bo. Imagine picking him up to be a part of the core.

He definitely shouldn’t move off Shortstop and I doubt he will. Regardless the Jays should be very interested.
M.E. Verified Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Semien could be a HOF 2b. At SS I don’t think so.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 fandom a weird thing. I'm really hoping Ray wins the CY and that Semien hits 44. Both achievements just increase the chances of: 1) losing some or all of the 14 ish WAR they produced for $24mm in 2021. 2) increasing incrementally the ton of dough its already going to take to keep one or both of them.

I'm fine with other teams overpaying and absorbing the regression to the mean. Or the Jays signing one of them. Not both.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Same! Gibby always talked about going to Waffle House but he may have been joking. They look so sketchy. I always do IHOP if I can. Open 24 hours down there too. Wish they still had Chik Fil A in Alberta They just opened a Chik FIL A about a 5 minute drive away from us here in Kitchener 😀

I think we will see a lot of Semien…in pinstripes. As for Ray he is going to be an overpay by someone for sure.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 I legit have a Mancrush on semien, cool dude, really gonna miss him.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Giant’s aren’t typically a team that throws around s*** loads of money. I will believe it when I see it. Plus I feel they will prioritize bringing back Byrant.
keggy Verified Member Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 Rob Longley @longleysunsport Soon to be free agent Marcus Semien on post-game Zoom tonight: “I still see myself as a shortstop.” #Bluejays Semien is too much of a professional to say anything, but it must be hard for a gold glove calibre SS to watch an inferior fielder play your position. Moving Semien to 2B as a rental made perfect sense. But if the Jays are serious about keeping him long term, they'll need to offer him the SS spot.

If Semien is re-signed, he’s SS and Bo moves to 2B. Which I think would necessitate a Biggio trade too.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I really think the team should try Gurriel at 3B in spring training next year.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I really think the team should try Gurriel at 3B in spring training next year. Ya I was floating the idea of this before too. He has the arm/height/infield experience to make it work.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Is this a joke? The Giants are routinely one of the higher payroll teams in the league. Never mentioned their payroll. Outside of Cueto in 2015 they don’t typically throw out major free agent dollars. I just don’t see them going 5 years and 100 million for Semien to play Second Base. Feel they would rather give that to Bryant to bring him back if anything.

He's above average and worked his ass off to get there, but not GG material.

They might move Crawford to a different position?
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 They might move Crawford to a different position? nope, they would never do that
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Definitely. If Semien is re-signed, he’s SS and Bo moves to 2B. Which I think would necessitate a Biggio trade too. Bo has made significant strides defensively in the past 8 weeks that's going to solidify his starting role at short next season.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 They might move Crawford to a different position? But why do that when Crawford is the superior defender. And they just gave him an extension. I just don’t see the fit. If he’s going to stay at Second probably should just stay in Toronto. Yankess are the bigger threat in my opinion.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Bo has made significant strides defensively in the past 8 weeks that's going to solidify his starting role at short next season. If they think Semien is worth signing (or another SS like Correa) Bo will be the one moving. Not saying he’s a bad SS but good teams like the Dodgers go after good players and fit them in.

The SS market this offseason is deep
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I also think it would be weird as f*** to have Semien switch positions this season only to have them flip flop the following season lol. Like how would that conversation with Bo and Semien even go. You will only come back if we both switch positions. After we spent the entire season working together we’re now going to do the opposite lol. If Semien wants to play Shortstop. He will likely have to take less money or less desirable situation.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Yeah I forgot they just extended him. That was probably a mistake on their part. The SS market this offseason is deep I mean it was extremely team friendly. 16 million a year for the next 2 years. If they strike out on Byrant I am sure they will make a play for Semien but not to play Shortstop. And don’t think they will go balls to the wall money wise. Just not there M.O.
keggy Verified Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Semien is definitely not a GG calibre SS. He's above average and worked his ass off to get there, but not GG material. I didn't watch him play SS in Oakland so I can only go by the metrics. His defensive value from 2018 to 2020 is third best of all SS in baseball, behind only Simmons and Lindor. So yeah, he's an elite defender by the numbers.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I really think the team should try Gurriel at 3B in spring training next year. If they do that, he needs to be assigned to winter ball, AFL or DWL.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Yeah I forgot they just extended him. That was probably a mistake on their part. The SS market this offseason is deep The extension told me that Bryant will be a Giant.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Man, Jonn's dumn. Stick to the Jays bro.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 If part of the cost of re-signing Semien is moving Bo from Short, then I'm even less interested than I was before. Semien is (likely) better right now, but he's 31, and Bo is 23, so I expect Bo to improve, and Semien to decline going forward. I really think you give Semien a qualifying offer, and a reasonable extension offer to stay at 2B. In the likely event he doesn't take it, you take your draft pick compensation and thank him for the great season. Ray is EASILY the more important extension candidate, IMO.
