TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Author Posted March 4, 2021 This guy is built like a freaking tank! Kid's a bad ass. Already love him. Hope he turns out.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Body looks a lot like Tijuan Walker He's actually bigger than TW. I dont know how accurate BR is, but they have Manoah listed at 6'6" 260 lbs and Walker at 6'4" 235 lbs https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=manoah000ale https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml Going by that video I dont think they're that far off

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Manoah actually looks like he's slimmed down since he was drafted. But he's a mountain of a man. Does he? If he's a true 6'6 then I'd have no issue believing he's still 260. He's a large lad and it's not even like he's some bumbling fool, dude looks pretty athletic moving off the mound.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 This is him pitching for Vancouver... Assuming his body has changed, which I guess from that ST angle it looks like it to some extent - jersey is far baggier though and you can still spot a bit of a gut - then this picture above isn't of a 260 lbs man.

At 6"6" that's 300 lbs easy Wonder if this increased fitness is another product of the Jays player development system
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 At 6"6" that's 300 lbs easy Wonder if this increased fitness is another product of the Jays player development system Exactly. 6'6 is huge and Manoah is built like a tank. He would look skinny at 230-240. It could be, maybe the team gave some recommendations for the players/prospects in the offseason in terms of workouts, but a lot of it is on the players. Many guys now in the offseason will go to private facilities or just generally do workouts on their own so I'd attribute most of this success to Manoah's work ethic.

For sure, but I betcha $500 there were a series of internal meetings after Vladdy showed up with a lot of new fat last summer. Changes were made.

Blue Jays FO (probably) - "OK, so we thought the next topic went without saying, but evidently not, so we're going to say it. You're f***ing professional athletes, the expectation is you keep yourself in prime shape to improve and perform. Nobody better walk into our new training facility in March with an extra 40 lbs around their waist - is that f***ing clear?"

I am 6'6 230 and noticeably smaller than him. He's a very big man.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 What's the chance we see Manoah this year? He killed it after being drafted in A-. Was a college pick. Probably would have pitched last year in A and A+. Should start this year in AA. https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/top-blue-jays-prospect-alek-manoah-made-sure-2020-wasnt-lost-year/ There's an article on him, little dated though. He touches on his conditioning, and developing his change-up last season at the alternate site.

I think he still has some real development to do as far as pitch #3 is concerned. That might keep him down all season. He could probably be a good reliever right now but that's not the goal.

On that note, is anyone else expecting significantly greater use of an opener this season?

Updated my post with an article that touched on him developing that 3rd pitch(change-up) to go along with his fastball and slider. Sounds like it was his top priority at the alt-site.

If keeping "starters" at 150 it makes sense to use the opener a lot for another reason, It would let starters "vulture" wins even if they don't go 5. Use an opener a lot, then you can have good "starters" still going 15-7 with 140 innings or something. I guess it would suck to have an opener give up 4 runs on your day, but probably it would even out, sometimes your team would score 4 and you come in, in the second leading 4-0.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Anyone else wish to discuss BJMB's cancel culture? I apologize to those that kept a baseball spin on the topic. Call this predictive deletion...the topic was heading in a repeated direction with the usual suspects leading the way.
