Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) So as things stand now, the Jays have Springer at CF and then 3 corner OF's. Obviously Grichuk is the worst of the bunch but we might be stuck with him because of his contract. The way I see it shaping out is we either trade Gurriel/Teo for a SP or platoon Tellez/Grichuk. Against Lefties - Grichuk plays RF and Teo DHs Against Righties - Tellez DH/1B and Teo RF What option do you prefer? Edited January 20, 2021 by Jays24
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 There are lots of ABs to go around with the current roster. If they add Brantley, then a move has to be made.

My choice would be sign Semien vs Brantley, play Semien at SS, Bo at 2b, Biggio at 3B, Teo, LGR Springer OF, Tellez 1B and Vlad at DH... Dump Grichuk and make space for young guns in future.

He just seems too expensive to be a 4th OFer but if we can suck it up, it would make for a great platoon situation and injury insurance.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 No need to dump Grichuk - good teams have good 4th OFers. Grichuk is a good 4th OFer.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 There isn't a redundancy as things stand. There will be one if Brantley is signed.

I would love for us to have that luxury but the guy makes 10M per for 3 more years. That's just too much for a 4th OFer, especially when we can use that money in other areas. But I won't complain if we do keep him as the 4th OF.

But once Martin, Groshans and others arrive, something needs to bend.. I would try to get something from Grichuk now or at least have someone take on his salary even if zero return, until waiting last moment and trying to shop him and nada..

I mean if you can get someone to take his contract - great, but that's unlikely. Why pay $5M/year for him to play elsewhere? Why give up a real prospect to get a team to take him? He's currently amazing depth to have. Good teams have great depth.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 No moves have to be made as things stand right now. Grichuk is a useful player and good teammate that will find plenty of at-bats. If we add a guy like Brantley then surely one of Teo or Lourdes is on the move and we're still in the same situation.
Funky Verified Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Few quick and tired thoughts Maybe Randal’s contract can be used to offset the cost of another larger contract being brought in. Ie) Arenado. How much does Cleveland value Kirk and Lourdes? Does it help get us into Ramirez conversations. What would it take to land Colorado’s beastly Marquez? Do you guys and gals expect Hernandez to improve defensively or is what we saw last year in the field likely to be repeated.

Grichuk as your 4th OF at $10M is what elite depth look like. He's not trash like most people (wrongly) think he is. He's just a flawed hitter playing out of position. His plate approach actually looked better this year (indicative by his lower K%). Save this post for when he will instantly post a 2 WAR season next year in RF.

Save this post for when he will instantly post a 2 WAR season next year in RF. In a 162 game season, Grichuk will be great for 60-80 games, the other half he sucks. That is my issue, his consistency or lack of. When he is on, he reduces his Ks and keeps the strike zone tight. When he sucks, he is Kng like a bastard. He does not play plus D. The good players all have slumps, but they are able to provide a more consistent product then just a streaky guy who's streaks inflate his numbers but is negative WAR when sucking 50% of the time.. IMO
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 There's no OF situation? Grichuk is a fine 4th OF, he'll still get 400+ AB's, good teams have good 4th OF'ers, man.

Yeah, there's no point for this thread. If we have Brantley, that changes everything, premature ejaculation thread.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 premature ejaculation thread. I usually try and think about baseball to avoid this.. In this case, baseball is the cause..

You just said sign Semien, same issue anyway you look at it? Who's our 4th OF'er then? No one's taking Grichuk's contract, chill, bruh.

Let's just hope that Grichuk does in fact see the least amount of playing time, but with Chuckles and Atkins desire in licking Grichuk's ball sack, who the f*** knows. I fear Atkins will order Montoya to play Grichuk just as much in order to gain justification in the contract he gave him. Let's hope Atkins swallows his pride and accepts it was not the greatest contract offer and let's the amount of playing be dictated by performance. I wouldn't mind Grichuk playing a lot while on one of his hot streaks, but at the same time he needs to sit when he's not. 300-400 ABs is perfectly fine.
keggy Verified Member Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Keep him. Grichuk is a solid 4th OF who can play center or platoon with Tellez if needed. The contract was a mistake but what's done is done. The elephant in the room is that Grichuk, Gurriel, and Hernandez all have somewhat risky batting profiles. If one or two of them takes a step back you won't regret having that depth. Grabbing Brantley and dumping Grichuk also makes sense if you want to mitigate some of that risk.

Keeping someone capable of playing passable CF (Ie Grichuk) isn't a bad thing anyway in case of injury to early 30s Springer or so he can have an occasional day off
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2021 Posted January 20, 2021 Injuries happen. There's nothing wrong with having four OF. If they sign Brantley and a starting IF that bumps both Grichuk and Tellez to the bench. A bit awkward but there's also nothing wrong with that - again, injuries happen and even if everyone is healthy the team can play some platoon matchups. I do think the team will try to trade Grichuk, in any event, but I'm not confident they will find a taker. A bad contract swap for a SP or SP/RP could make sense. I'm not a huge fan of doing something ham-fisted like signing an ancient Brantley and then flipping Gurriel or Teoscar for a SP. Gurriel and Teo are core building blocks with tons of value and upside - they should only be traded thoughtfully and deliberately for maximum value, they should not be flipped willy nilly because one old LF/DH is brought in.
