Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 There is a finite supply of players in key areas of need. The Jays have massive holes in the infield and starting rotation, and with Kim and Lindor off the market gone are two of the top available targets with which to fill that hole. More dire is the starting pitcher market, where arguably 3 of the top 4 available free agents targets in Gausman, Stroman, and Sugano are all gone. The trade market is quickly dwindling as well, with Darvish, Snell and Carrasco all being traded away to other teams. If Jays management continues to slow play the market and stick to their value offers they are eventually going to be left fighting over the scraps. Stroman was never an option even if he was a FA. That relationship was damaged prior to the trade and yesterday was just more evidence of that.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Definitely not happening. Right now it's a 1 team race, so like... "definitely" isn't correct.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2021 Author Posted January 8, 2021 We don't need to spend this offseason just because we can. If the right player can't be had, for whatever reason, there's nothing wrong with holding onto our flexibility for the trade deadline or offseason next year. We supposedly have an advantage this offseason which we have never really had compared to other teams. Next, or trade deadline, if all goes back to normal or it looks like it will be and owners have confidence to spend, then we become another fish in the pond. Having said that, if we really think we can get some of the FA's next year, then I wouldn't want to handicap us with moves now. But def think longer we wait, more competition. So bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush? Exactly, if we csnt attract free agents when there are very few buyers, what makes people think we can bid with other teams when things return to normal. This offseason should be our perfect storm so let's see how things unfold.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 From Longley: "Meanwhile, Jays fans in a tizzy about losing out on Lindor may want to stand down — for now, anyway, especially if it means the chances of landing Springer improve. The talented all star reportedly is seeking a five-year deal for a minimum of $150 million U.S., which would be towards the upper end of what Toronto would be willing to pay, although doable." https://torontosun.com/sports/baseball/toronto-blue-jays/longley-losing-out-on-lindor-doesnt-mean-blue-jays-are-doomed-in-off-season-derby/wcm/22d159ff-7b7f-482c-bc71-83577dfc30cf/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Stroman was never an option even if he was a FA. That relationship was damaged prior to the trade and yesterday was just more evidence of that. I'm well aware Stroman was never an option due to the fractured relationship, but the fact remains that dependable good quality starting pitching is a rare commodity, and each guy that the Jays management strikes out on reduces the options available to them. The free agent market is already basically down to Bauer and various reclamation projects, then finally back of the rotation options.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Haven't heard many recent Bauer rumors. Can't imagine too many teams willing to pay him 25+/yr. Any recent connections with us to him?

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Haven't heard many recent Bauer rumors. Can't imagine too many teams willing to pay him 25+/yr. Any recent connections with us to him? I think there are no rumours because Bauer is just getting to know all of his suitors. It doesn't seem like he's fielding offers yet. It is possible that his market is softer than people think. He's probably asking for $36M AAV and hoping for $30M (on a long term deal). Teams might not view him as Cole/Strasburg though... if he's seen as more of a Wheeler/Ryu talent then his AAV will not get so high. I don't think his persona helps him either. Teams aren't looking for off the field drama - they want their stars to be adored by all.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Wat?? You don’t think teams would hop on 5/125 say? I meant for his 36m/yr asking price. I don't know, for Springer there are reports hinting to what the Mets and Blue Jays offered, but not much on anyone else.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Anyone think its possible with the Lindor trade, the Cleveland Baseball Team becomes a Springer suitor. They have more of a need for him then perhaps any team in MLB. And clearly have the salary room.

I'm also worried about the Giants. They are losing almost all of their payroll at the end of this year.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Like the Jays Stroman trade / Ryu signing... I doubt it, but maybe? Cleveland has always been crafty. Replace the 28 yr old Lindor just before he hits free agency with a 22 yr old solid player with upside in Gimenez (and three other players), and sign a superstar (or elite at least) 30 yr old Springer for probably less than what Lindor would demand in a year. A much better outcome than retaining Lindor alone. The conventional thinking is they need to save money, I'm not so sure that's their motivation.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 You're kidding right? Nope. MLB.com listed Cleveland as a contender, but an unlikely one, to sign Springer. Dark horse candidate.

Who's going to give Springer 30 a year for 5 years though? 5 and 125 seems pretty realistic. A team might stretch to 130 or 135. Mariners, Giants, Sox, Jays?
