G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Yeah I don’t like the whole draft lotto format, but if that’s what’s required to stop teams from tanking then so be it. I think it needs to be more than just the top 3 picks though.... maybe top 10? Bottom 10 teams have a random lotto for the first 10 picks? I like the lotto for the NBA Some years there's a Lebron and little else and you don't want teams trying to sink to last place to guarantee they get him In baseball there's usually more to pick from and harder to project who might be a superstar years down the road.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 The system in place discourages tanking to get #1 since the top talent doesn't always go as the # 1 pick. In the NBA, NHL etc, the top talent always goes #1 with very few exceptions. To make a draft lottery as an effective tool against tanking in MLB they'd have to change how the draft works entirely to make tanking useful, and THEN put in a lottery to discourage it. There are any number of years where the teams with the #1 pick takes guys that are NOT the top talent, because they know they can pay them less than slot in order to sign other guys in later rounds above slot. So a draft lottery doesn't impact that at all. Makes no sense. Teams sell players at trade dealines because of 2 reasons. A) they know they aren't making the playoffs so they try to sell any players they can to save money, or because they know they're pretty sure they aren't making the playoffs and want to trade any talent they can that will net them assets at lower cost... to save money. The best way to discourage tanking in the MLB is with expanded playoffs and a hard salary floor. There's still advantages to tanking in MLB. Like receiving more pool money.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Look at Wander Franco's deal, this looks so bad.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Franco will be traded in 2026 for a monster haul.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Franco will be traded in 2026 for a monster haul. Exactly, Rays have a track record of trading their players when they get expensive. I don't see that changing.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Can anyone who's been more closely paying attention confirm if there will be a Rule 5 draft and Winter Meetings if there is no CBA deal in place, or will they get postponed indefinitely?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Look at Wander Franco's deal, this looks so bad. Did he negotiate the deal himself?
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 I don't see anything majorly wrong with that Franco deal. He might end up leaving some money on the table. But this is a player with half a season in the majors.

If no CBA, no transactions can take place. Zero. Not sure if they will still have winter meetings for the social aspect but find it hard to believe they would even reach verbal deals pending the signing of a new CBA if not 100% sure what the CBA is..

But this is a player with half a season in the majors. He probably earns most of that just going through arb, without having to sell out any of his free agent years. But that's more money than his great grandkids could spend in their lifetime, so at that point it's choosing security over that massive, ridiculous payday. Let's offer that same deal to Bo and Vlad!

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Franco will be traded in 2026 for a monster haul. Yeah, we can all tell exactly which year Franco will be traded. Rays owner is a f***ing joke
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Yeah, Misner is a 45FV on Fangraphs. That's not nothing. Rays move Wendle for an OK prospect and make room for a player >> Wendle in Brujan.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Look at Wander Franco's deal, this looks so bad. it's funny how closely this structure matches the TV deal. 2025 is the first increase. 2027 is when it hits close to $100M Franco will be traded in 2026 for a monster haul. Depends on the stadium/city situation. 2028 is the first season in a new city/stadium. If Franco is a top performer, makes it tough to trade him and sell 3 times the tickets.

They also had 41 men on the 40 man with the Raley and Kluber signings I don't think they necessarily have to see that much in Kam, they like the value in the bottom end of their 40 man. I have to admit I know nothing about the 3 of the 4 guys they added to the 40 man, but they got watch listed for the LOD draft just cause they are Rays.

Fangraphs has him 11th in their rankings. Not sure where BA and BP have him, but the kid has loud tools.

Everything I’ve seen says 11:59pm EST is when the lockout starts. Hopefully that means there’s enough time between tonight and tomorrow morning to get signs/trades done with physicals before the deadline.
