Report: MLB proposes 154-game season to players' union

https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2103892

Sounds like a perfect scenario. How can the players not accept this...

The idea to move the start of the season back a month is BS. Either you are set to play now, or you are not ref COVID. Every other sport is doing it. What is the metric going to be? It will just keep getting pushed back again and again. A new strain will come up or we now need a different vaccine. To me, total BS, if you can plan in May you can play in April/March.

Not really. They want to play as many games as possible in front of fans. If they believe that extra month will allow them to play another 30 games per team with people in the stands, then it makes complete sense. I don't think this has anything to do with issues regarding the players, who will all almost certainly be vaccinated by then.

The NBA started way late and wiped off 10% off their reg season schedule. Covid situation not much better now than was then, vaccine or not

Yes with the single shot j&j vaccine coming on stream in a few weeks with millions of doses already produced, and the military mobilized to carry out vaccinations, everyone that wants one should be vaccinated in the USA by May.

It seems to me both sides have an interest in the DH, and lengthened playoffs. Lengthened playoffs bring money to the owners and screen time / media coverage for the players. The DH makes the games better for the fans, and thus, for the owners and of course lengthened careers for some players. Counterproductive negotiating approach by both sides, the result of mistrust.

The league is pretty much offering 8 paid days off in exchange for expanded playoffs. It's clear that the owners are extremely desperate for the latter and players shouldn't concede until CBA negotiations if they are smart.

Why? The players can just agree to the expanded playoffs for this season only.

I think by agreeing to it for a second consecutive season, the players would lose almost all of their leverage.

They already rejected the first proposal for the same reason, so if they accept the latest it’s clearly still a concession.

The players are getting paid in full while playing 8 less games. How anyone could have a problem with that is beyond me. Them wanting to start as late as possible increases the chance for fans to be at games.

Times have been tough for everyone so MLB players are delusional if they think they don't have to make any sacrifices and what they're being asked to do for this upcoming season is very very reasonable.

If you're concerned for next years CBA then just agree to this for the upcoming season only. That will give both sides a better indication of how beneficial it is to both sides.

The rational for one month delay was a higher % of the general population being vaccinated by then. My point is, what is the metric? Will they keep moving the goal posts..? What if the new strains start to hit? I am in Florida and everything has been relatively normal for months apart from the 4,000 people who died in January. So they set a target of they want X million vaccinated by start of play, fine, but then a second or third strain and they need another vaccine.. They meet the target for vaccines but cases rise 50% with warm weather and more people out and interacting?

My point being, either you have protocols in place for fans like they did for the payoffs, NFL, College etc, or you don't. They think they will go full capacity due to one month??

But every month that you can delay increases your odds of things returning to normal. There is obviously a breaking point where you can't keep delaying things and it seems the MLB has chosen that to be only 1 month. There's no prescendence for something like this, which is why I guess we have a ton of difference in opinion.

Each state has different rules for fans. Clearly whatever talks MLB has had with the relevant authorities suggest to them that a month delay is going to be worth enough to them to be paying the players the full amount for less games. The only way this would be the case is if at least some fans are going to be in the stands who otherwise wouldn't be.

So who ghost edited my post?

There are almost 22 million people in FL, almost 2/3 the population of Canada. In 2017, there were almost 17, 000 deaths a month in Florida.. 4000 is a blip..

I got Hurl as the even money favorite, Laila right behind 8/5, and BTS 5-1

Haha. Actually after I posted I totally remembered you were also an active mod. I just usually think of the Big 3.

You would’ve taken quite a bit of action if it was Vegas

Breaking: Sources are telling me and @Ken_Rosenthal that the @Orioles are trading RHP Alex Cobb to the @Angels Not all details have been worked out yet. Cobb is on the last year of his deal -- owed $15 million.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Orioles ship off a worthwhile prospect(s) to get them to pay the whole $15m

Classic Angels move. Could've probably bought Odorizzi and have some more stability/upside but hoping that 33 year old injury prone Alex Cobb bounces back is the way to go instead.

If the O's are eating like $8-10M and only getting a C prospect then that's fine for LAA.

Buy fantasy stocks in Akin, Kremer, and Baumann because they are going to pitch this year.

Solid career for Pedroia

I always had an admittedly irrational dislike for him

Probably would have loved him if he'd played second base for the Jays

In a deal between the O's and the Halos, its anyone's guess as to who will win. Probably neither.

Angels have been hamstrung throughout Trout's peak by the Pujols deal, and the same team that gave good assets away for the right to overpay Vernon. New management, I know.

As for the O's, well, where to start?

Had to trade away some payroll since they couldn't get plan A to work (Trying to convince Trey Mancini to defer a sizeable chunk of his hard earned salary after coming back from battling cancer... LOL)

The Angels will probably bring Garrett Richards back for 10 games or whatever before he explodes again. It's sad because they legit probably are a Trevor Bauer away from being a very good team. Trout/Rendon/Ohtani/Fletcher/Adell is a very good offensive core, and guys like Iglesias, Upton, and their catchers should all be 1-2 wins at their positions.

Bauer

Heaney

Ohtani

Quintana

Bundy

Canning/Sandoval/Barria/Cobb

Is actually pretty good. Definitely good enough to win games with that lineup.

So trade for him with the Red Sox?

Garrett Richards has already been signed by the Red Sox.
