Apparently Benintendi will be traded by the end of the week? Seems like an odd move - trading low.

Or last chance to get anything for him? He's pretty s*****, relative to past expectations.

They must be really REALLY worried about his back affecting his ability to run and field. It'll be interesting to see what the return is.

After acquiring Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco, the Mets remain engaged with Springer, Mets GM Sandy Alderson told Jon Heyman on the Big Time Baseball podcast.

"Given the level of excitement, enthusiasm surrounding the Mets, I don't think we've been crossed off his list. ... I would say that we're still engaged, in a loose sense, with Springer," Alderson said, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

Seems like confirmation they backed off. They’re probably dangling a half-serious Bluejay contract out there still

Sounds like Alderson is willing to entertain Springer at a bargain price, but he isn't going to make the top offer.

Encouraging for us, but all it takes is for Steve Cohen to say "f*** it" and he can sign Springer while barely going over the luxury tax. A Mets reporter was saying that if the Mets sign Springer for $25M, they'd have to pay something like $2M in overage fees, which is nothing to Cohen if he really wants to put his team over the top. That being said, I think the Mets might go a cheaper route for CF because they're looking to add a reliever as well. They might be looking to spread out the value.

Good news for us though. Let's get it done. Springer for 5 years, $135M!

I don't think the Mets actually care about paying the tiny amount of tax a 2021 overage would bring. They just don't want to start their lux tax clock this year, knowing that they will for sure be exceeding it next year and likely the years beyond. Trying not to start accumulating more significant future penalties by trying to stay under it this year alone.

It's Corey Kluber throwing day, which will inevitably lead to 3 or 4 Jays article from various local media groups indicating the Jays sent scouts to watch and they are interested! I'm glad the media will have something to write about tonight.

It would make sense anyone interested in Paxton or a handful of other starters would want to wait and see Kluber. Maybe we can get some movement on the starting pitching market after today.

That's what I figured

lol a KBO team has asked the league to suspend two minor leaguers they have for online sports betting, which is legal on Sports Toro in South Korea, but apparently not legal in the KBO (I guess they are worried about match fixing?). 50 game suspension, holy s***!

https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20210113011300315

SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean baseball club Doosan Bears said Wednesday they've asked the league office to suspend their two minor league players for gambling.

The Bears said they recently learned that right-hander Jeong Hyun-wook had purchased Sports Toto lottery tickets and that catcher Kwon Ki-young had gambled on an illegal betting website.

While Sports Toto is the only form of government-sanctioned sports betting in South Korea, Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) players are still prohibited from buying Sports Toto tickets. Gambling activities on any other channel are also banned.

The Bears said they requested the KBO to designate Jeong and Kwon as "inactive" players, and added they'll fully cooperate with further investigation by the league office and legal authorities, as necessary.

Once they're put on the inactive list, only the KBO commissioner can reinstate them.

The Bears said they became aware of Jeong's betting activities after learning that the 21-year-old had accumulated debt. The club then interviewed all the other players about their personal financial situations and Kwon's illegal betting came up.

Under the league rule guiding gambling, the first-time violators will face a suspension of minimum 50 games, 120 hours of community service, and a fine of 5 million won (US$4,560).

The second offense will result in a ban of 70 or more games, along with a 10 million won fine and 180 hours of community service. The third violation will lead to a lifetime ban.

Which 5+ (Nearly 25? c'mon Passan) were so busy that they couldn't send a dude for due diligence purposes?

None of the rebuilding clubs were there.

Unless he's counting the 25+ that sat in front of their computers watching him throw via zoom call.

yeah, honestly do you think the Pirates had someone there? No real chance or reason to sign him.

Kluber could be a good fit for Pitt, sign him, hope to god he kills it, and flip him at the deadline.

Kluber wasn't the only pitcher. Cishek and Swarzak pitched as well.

He could be a fit for the Jays. I hope he kills it and we're debating whether or not he should start game one of the playoffs!

Okay? My point was he has value to any club.

But what would his motivation to sign with them be? He'll have interest from better and competing teams

Baez signed a 2 year deal with the 'Stros, pending physical.

Depends on the contract $$$, I'm just saying it's a reasonable option in their park, much like a TB deal. Although, unlikely, lol.

That's a weird one for me. Baez was not very good under the hood last year. Astros are not the team I would expect to give him two years. Might be worse than AJ Cole?

Last year Pitchers didn't have a normal spring training to build up to the season. 17 innings wouldn't lead me to believe Baez is worse than Cole.

Plenty of guys I'd want here before him. Yuck.

He didn't have the special sauce.
