Really sounds like a Bryant deal any day. This is on MLBTR:

TODAY: “The Mets and Cubs have not spoken in several weeks,” according to SNY’s Andy Martino, and it doesn’t seem likely that the Mets will reignite negotiations about Bryant now that Lindor has been acquired. However, there is “increasing industry chatter” that Bryant could be traded somewhere “as soon as this weekend.”

Bryant is such a good fit for us. The acquisition cost should be low and we get a shot to sign one of the top hitters in the game. If it doesn't work out, we can snag a comp pick and go after one of the big shortstops in 2021.

I agree with this, but with the understanding he probably isn't signing an extension (which may decrease the cost to acquire him).

But those are the same reasons the Cubs probably keep him (unless they get a good package).

If he still has Boras I’d imagine the extension would need to be based on MVP Bryant... so there will be no extension as part of anything

Only seems fair if we were the runner ups on Lindor to go after Bryant. We have the positional flexibility and the money to make it work. Plus the Cubs would ship him to the other league.

Yeah, he's going to free agency, no teams going to push a 35 game sample last year in Boras' face. He still gets to see what are team and FO is like, at least if acquired.

You think the Braves have given up on Riley?

They could keep him a 3b and Bryant in LF. Bryant fits their Donaldson, Osuna, short term big bat mode and Bryant can play 3rd if Riley does not break out. Not sure if they think Waters is ready and could trade an OF also in this scenario.

1/10 for Schwarber's a nice get, Cubs are dumb. Lets get Bryant from them.

The signing has been officially announced by the Nationals. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the deal also contains an $11MM mutual option for the 2022 season. That option contains a $3MM buyout, so Schwarber’s guaranteed money breaks down as that $3MM plus $7MM in salary.

Yeah, makes sense, certainly an AA target.

Bryant is a Boras client, really unlikely he signs an extension before testing FA.

I probably didn't word that as well I could have, but I expect that any new contract would come after the season. It just seems that players are far more likely to sign a free agent contract after they have already played in Canada. Robbie Ray wouldn't have taken our money if we didn't trade for him, for example.

So you are saying Robby Ray really likes Buffalo?

Probably emphasizes his point even more. Ray is on record saying he was impressed with the organization.

If all you have to do is pay most of Bryant’s salary and trade a prospect like Hiraldo, then I’m on board. I doubt they sign one of the big four if they trade for Bryant though.

That seems very reckless with Tatis for someone who isn't arbitration eligible yet. Would he really get more 2 years from now?

Basically 7 FA years at 7/203. And he’ll still be young enough where there’s hopefully not any dead money last couple years. For that privilege you’re paying maybe $50m+ more than arb process? So prob well worth it if he’s legit superstar

Acuna’s agent must be very embarrassed right now.

Huh? There's no way he gets 120M in arbitration.

I may have misspoke. I’m saying they’re paying him like $115m the next 4 years... so if he would’ve made $50-60?.. they’re overpaying by $50m+?

So if you add $50 mill on the 7/203- that’s a really good deal for FA Tatis

You're talking about a deal that's like 7/260 if you assume he gets 60M in arbitration (it might be a little more). I really don't see that as value that they should jump on now rather than 2 years from now when they have more information on him. I can't see a deal 2 years from now being considerably more per year than 37 or 38M.

I was just playing devils advocate. I can see both sides. In 4 years if Tatis is a super star, with FA inflation it’d prob be 10/400 contract he’s looking at. There’s some value in only having to give him 7yrs at that point. But I would prob wait..
