saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Me too I'm at the point I'd rather sign Didi or Kim or Turner and trade for a starter like Darvish or Gray The asking price for Lindor is obviously too high or a trade would have happened already. I like a Darvish trade too. This is likely just my over active imagination, but I keep thinking we will trade Jansen in a package for Darvish and sign JTR. You might say the cubs don't need Jansen with Contreras, but Contreras only has 2 years vs 4 with Jansen and if you're trading Darvish you're probably taking a step back for 2 years. Contreras would garner a pretty good return at the trade deadline this year.

The Padres get Snell, Sign Kim and now trade for Darvish....wow if it all comes to....they will have a great offseason Padres “Deep” Into Talks To Acquire Yu Darvish By Steve Adams | December 28, 2020 at 11:57am CDT Despite last night’s agreement to acquire Blake Snell from the Rays, the Cubs are also “deep” in talks on a trade that would send Yu Darvish from Chicago to San Diego, according to Dennis Lin, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic (Twitter link). R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports first indicated that the Padres were still in the mix for Darvish even after landing Snell. Importantly, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that San Diego is not on Darvish’s 12-team no-trade list, so the deal can be made without requiring Darvish’s approval.

Crazy to think that they're still in on Darvish! Are they trading Gore now? Preller's never been afraid of making a bold move. Lots have backfired, but Darvish and Snell sure will help out a rotation next year! At least they are in the National league!
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 How many guys can the Padres keep trading for? Do they have an unlimited supply of prospects? P.S. I love that there's a separate thread for this. It gets hard to monitor all the information being thrown into 2 or 3 big threads.

I love that there's a separate thread for this. It gets hard to monitor all the information being thrown into 2 or 3 big threads. They really do have a lot.. Great scouting department. That is what I was talking about with the Jays. Jays do not have anywhere near the pitching depth in their farm/system. Not close to Padres, Indians, Pirates, Rays, Arizona, and others...with pitching. While a good system, that would be my prioriy at the milb and MLB level.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Kim to the Padres is confirmed. Disappointing.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Hey Ryu, let's meet for dinner and tell me all about SOCAL. What is the name of that strip club Tommy Pham likes? Where are the best beaches...
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Conflicting messages now. Joel Sherman is the one reporter saying the Padres are "in the lead". He is saying the deal will have an AAV of $7-8M and be 4-5 years, but only guarantee an amount in the high $20M's, which seems silly and is non-specific enough for me to think that he is being fed BS and doesn't have a clue. Other reporters (Korean) are saying Kim is coming for a physical but it's not with a specific team. I don't get the fit with the Padres. Kim has only started one game at 2B in his KBO career. Are they throwing Cronenworth into the outfield? Seems odd. I have to think if they're serious about Darvish they'll be offering Cronenworth to the Cubs in a Darvish deal. The Cubs have a hole at 2B and an imminent gaping hole at 3B when Kris Bryant leaves.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Jeeze, he gave up on playing shortstop I guess. SS and 3B, the two positions he's played regularly since becoming a KBO regular.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 (edited) The positive spin is that this means we're still in on the better players with one less rival. We already have Biggio and Bo for 2 Infield spots so there's only space for 1 more infielder this offseason. I will only be disappointment by this if we strike out completely on DJL or Lindor. To be honest, my hearts already set on one of them. Edited December 28, 2020 by Jays24
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 SS and 3B, the two positions he's played regularly since becoming a KBO regular. That's huge for the Padres. If you could, you'd love to have 4 SS's playing all 4 infield positions.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 There's too many good options out there to be disappointed in not signing Kim. He's probably the most fun of all the infield options but his outcomes are also probably the most volatile. Semien, Didi, etc. would all be fine signings too and those guys are more sure things as they have track records of hitting against big league pitching.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 The dream offseason infield signing is still Justin Turner on like a 2 year deal
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 The dream offseason infield signing is still Justin Turner on like a 2 year deal Jays dream off season should not be signing a 36 year old to a multi year deal. Jays need to get out of the deep end and put their water wings back on. Trade for a salary dump and add a prospect. Target Pitt and try to acquire Musgrove or Tallian Sign Molina and Happ to 1 year deals and save some $$$ for a franchise SS next season.

Planning your current moves for potential future free agents isn't a good approach imo. If there are players you like and you can flex some of the muscle you've been raving about all offseason then go do it. If you can't then sure, we have no choice but to wait. Don't be like the Raptors with Giannis or the Knicks every offseason planning for things that can change on a dime. Especially considering you aren't even a lock for getting anyone.

If Rogers had an ironclad guarantee the money would still be there next year it could make sense to bank that much. Wish it worked that way

Wish it worked that way And the fact there should be more teams competing in the market with things returning to normal soon. If we can't sign free agents when most other teams are trying to stand pat or trim payroll, why would anyone be confident we can do better next year? We need to progressively show that we are becoming contenders. We started with Ryu last year and have communicated to the public that we are trying to do the same thing this year. I have faith we will do something but lets wait and see what that is.

My fear is that they over pay to get lindor. I would rather they overpaid with dollars to get Bauer, Springer, or Lemahieu

Most I would give up for Lindor is below: LGJ, Hiraldo, Adams & Murphy But I would rather try and get Carrasco as well and maybe reshape the deal: LGJ, Jansen, Hiraldo, Pardinho & Kay

I would rather they overpaid with dollars to get Bauer, Springer, or Lemahieu For sure, why trade your best prospects to pay Lindor a lot when you can do that in free agency just for a draft pick. I'm just not sure of the chances of it actually happening. We'll find out soon enough. With the Lindor/Shatkins connection, that seems like the most realistic route.

xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I was hoping we'd get Kim just because he's still young and rumors were he was only getting 8-10m/yr while projecting for 3-4WAR. I preferred him vs trading away a bunch of prospects for an unsigned Lindor. Too bad we couldn't get it done.

His market for that cost in COVID times is relatively small. Add in Carrasco and it's more, but still not crazy, since he had a poor and unhealthy 2019 and 2020 was a small sample.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Author Posted December 28, 2020 The Jays are still a hard sell to free agents with options. It takes two to tango in free agency. Jays could have strong interest but if the player doesn't share that interest or likes another team/offer better, then there isn't much you can do. With Kim gone, DJ likely re-signing with the Yankees, Turner unlikely to leave LA for Toronto, and Semien/Didi/Simmons probably looking for SS gigs, I'm not sure where the Jays turn at this point. Lindor seems like a very unShatkins type of move so I still don't think that's all too likely, but if they really want him, then chances are trading for him and trying to sell him on staying is the only way they'd be able to do it (hoping he chooses Toronto as a FA over teams like the Yanks, Mets, etc, who might want to sign him is a pipe dream).

A big move would be Springer obviously. Sugano is a good fit also.
