Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Pitchers seem to love Pete Walker. I don't think i have ever heard a negative thing said about him, wonder if he gets a shot some day at managing or if he is happy being the pitching guru at the Jays, Don't really want to lose him. Also i would be happy with a Walker/Paxton get should be able to get Walker for 2 years and maybe Paxton on 2 but it might take 3years. Ryu Paxton Pearson Walker Ray/Stripling Thats not a terrible Rotation there. I don't think either of those guys get multi-year deals, wouldn't mind getting them, though.

Yeah with Happ and Quintana both settling for 1/$8M, it seems like outside of Bauer and perhaps Tanaka there is a decent chance that every SP left settles for a one year agreement. Heck there's even a chance Tanaka takes a one year deal (for a good chunk of money).
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 I was under the impression Walker had already signed with the Jays lol

Starting pitchers who signed 1 year contracts this off season: Stroman (QO) Gausman (QO) Kluber 11M Ray 8M Happ 8M Quintana 8M Morton 15M Smyly 11M Wacha 3M DeSclafani 3M Lester 5M? Did I miss anyone? So far isn't Mike Minor the only one to even get a 2 year deal?? Bauer will get a multi year deal of course (Unless he and the Dodgers decide to do something crazy like a 1/45M deal) and probably Tanaka but that might be it.

Yup, Tanaka has said he'll do a 1 year deal for 15+, weird how Minor got 2 years the only SP to get a multi-year deal so far. Imagine if the Dodgers got Bauer on a one year deal. f*** that, imagine if Toronto did. Edited January 21, 2021 by Spanky99
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 (edited) I could totally see that Dodgers 1 year deal actually happening, especially if he doesn't have super strong offers elsewhere Bauer - f*** Gerrit Cole I'm the highest paid single season SP ever and I can maybe win a WS possibly pitching against him Dodgers - f*** the Padres now our rotation is still better than yours 1. Bauer 2. Kershaw 3. Beuhler (Dave Roberts - f*** I don't even know how to order the first 3 cause it's an embarrassment of riches Muah ah ah ah ah!!!) 4/5 - May/Price/Urias/Gonsolin Pay luxury tax one year, win the WS back to back, and let Bauer go elsewhere after, leaving payroll space for Seager/Bellinger Edited January 21, 2021 by G-Snarls

Odorizzi is reportedly searching for a 3 year deal, however in this market and with the rough season he had I doubt he'll get an offer like that. He can serve as a cautionary tale against second tier starters turning down multi year contracts in favor of the qualifying offer, there's a good chance he'll end up short on overall earnings compared to had he accepted the Jays offer last offseason.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Yeah, I've read that chat, I'm a Taijuan fan, I wouldn't be upset if he's an addition after some other names. It's starting to look like the Birds are all in on FA. Talent and dollars aside, it's always a big plus to have a player who wants to be a Blue Jay.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Down for Walker coming back on a short term deal. I prefer that over giving Odorizzi a three year deal. I would still love to dream on Bauer though. I just think the Jays can afford to make that play. The core of this team is still multiple years away from making big money.

Yes they could certainly afford to give Bauer a nice front loaded contract 2021 - 40M 2022 - 35M 2023 - 35M 2024 - 30M 2025 - 30M Would that get it done?? But they might prefer a trade for a more cost controlled starter plus a 3B
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Signing Bauer (who declined a QO) would cost us: A team that neither exceeded the luxury tax in the preceding season nor receives revenue sharing will lose its second-highest selection in the following year's Draft, as well as $500,000 from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. Trading for a SP/3B combo would cost a major leaguer and multiple prospects

I don't care how data driven he is and how he seems to believe he can pitch every other day, he's not Jacob deGrom. Bauer has no business getting a 5/170 deal after one elite season two years ago and one third of an elite season both in the worst divisions in baseball. I'd certainly welcome his addition to the rotation and I know it would take us overpaying to get it done but hard pass at those terms.

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Christ - I work with my U11 team during the winter (for those who want to come out and when it doesn't interfere with hockey or other commitments). Well Done!!!!....My son-inlaw also coaches that age group in Kitchener and it's the same for him working on skills and team building. It's not always baseball skills but people skills and building friendships.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Damn. Maybe this lowers his trade value Yeah. Trade for him and offer him a long-term deal at a slight discount with a full NTC. Everyone wins (except the Cubs).
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Damn. Maybe this lowers his trade value He's the new Adam Dunn. Plus he has an ugly wife. Hard pass.

He said it all leading edge, they have cameras that can zoom into the pitchers hand at the point of release to analyze the grips on the seams and other minut details to increase velocity or spin rate. He admitted that it may not increase greatly but maybe just enough to make a difference!

Especially if those one yr deals for SP could put 45,000 fans in the seats for a few yrs till our young stars start earning the big bucks. Rogers saw what having a contending does for butts in seats and viewership and these increased numbers goes a long way in paying these players when they are due! Otherwise the Jays will just become a farm team for the big boys like a cpl teams in Fla.

I think 2-3 of our young guys could be effective starters right away. Maybe a 1-year, $40M isn't crazy. Then we'd have the SWRs and Manoahs of the world ready by 2022.

I would like Odorizzi here on a 2-3 year deal. Damnit, Roark has kind of mucked things up with his awful self.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Had to Google. Woof. Solid take It's true but it's also kind of a meme haha. I think it was a scout who said Kris Bryant was going to fail because he has an ugly wife and that it shows a lack of confidence.

It's a Moneyball (the movie, not sure about the book) reference isn't it?
