Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I have zero interest in Bauer at that price Makes you wish we went the Padres route via trade if true. Only good thing about Bauer's request is that the term is great and he also wants to start every 4 days, so technically you're getting more out of him than a normal pitcher.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Bauer is my favourite player in the MLB
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Haha damn... I'd be scarred from tweeting Bauer information out going forward.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Bauer looks like a douche there. Seems like Heyman did nothing wrong or abnormal.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I have zero interest in Bauer at that price Bauer pitched against the Sox once last year giving up 2 runs on 2 solo home runs striking out 5 over 7 innings with one walk. That was the only decent team he faced. He faced the Cubs twice who finished 20th in runs scored. He faced Milwaukee 3 times, Pittsburgh twice, Detroit twice, and the Royals once. He's obviously a very good pitcher, but where does his AAV land? I can't put him at 36. I'm not sure I can put him at 30. Somewhere between 25 and 30 over 5 years. It seems all the big free agents are asking for the world and there just aren't a lot of spenders. Are we going to wait until the end of January before their asks come down and guys start signing?

If Heyman is claiming he tried to contact Bauer's agent and he really didn't, then you have to wonder if the rest of the post is also made up. Bauer could definitely word things a little more professionally, but I don't blame him for being upset at media figures lying about him. It's about time someone was willing to call them out on it.

I think Heyman used "declined to comment" unfairly. Luba didn't reply to his texts yesterday, but that isn't the same as "declined to comment", especially if the texts were during the same day.

Yeah, agreed. Outside of the dripping sarcasm, which you either like or don’t/and if you don’t can see calling him douche, he’s definitely within his right to call out bad info and more ppl should do it
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I'm in full support of Bauer/Luba. The Momentum channel on YouTube ("Bauer Bytes" in particular) is great, and them being so active on social media and engaging with fans for Bauer's FA process (especially during one of the most boring off seasons ever) is something more players need to do. Hopefully Luba gets more high profile clients and this becomes more common.

Luba admitted that Heyman texted her but she "didn't have time to read his texts" or whatever. That's essentially declining to comment and I'm if a reporter that's how I would define it. These people communicate at light speed so when someone ignored a message 99% of the time that's an active decision. Despite his shortcomings Heyman is an old pro at this stuff and Luba is pretty new/naive so I'm not surprised she doesn't know how it works. Notice also that her and Bauer are not disputing the fundamental story. They are just pissy that an org leaked it so they are whining like babies on Twitter to distract from the meat. It's a PR thing and pretty lame. And I like Bauer and Luba enough, it's just so plain to me what is going on here specifically.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Agreed ignored text should equal declined to comment. Didn’t know that part. Also if the fundamental story is true, then yeah Bauer would be a douche. Closer reading I guess would indicate they didn’t really deny it. It’s different in tone than Cohen’s recent takedowns of media that were apparently making up stories/using bad sources Actually TB’s initial tweet is a bit ambiguous. By “learning so much” that could mean he’s learning it for the first time (which is how I initially took it) or as Laila said he’s just mad people are learning about it

Do you think the fact Bauer isn't asking for outrageous term allows him to ask for more yearly? A 5 year contract should be his entire prime unlike some other crazy contracts that get given out until a pitchers late 30s. Also if he really intends to pitch every 4 days, you are getting more out of him than a normal pitcher. I can see someone biting at a 5/175 deal only if he pitches a certain amount of games. Not us but someone lol.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Bauer's response to Heyman seems to suggest that he's more upset about "agent declines to comment" rather than the actual story itself. I guess Heyman could have written "agent could not be reached for comment" or something along those lines. I don't necessarily blame Heyman for the wording since it's semantics, but that might have been what caused Bauer's response.

Not us but someone lol. 5 and 35 is a lot for Bauer. He's got a career 3.85 FIP. You can say he's been really good 2 of the last 3 years, but last year was hardly a year and he pitched probably the softest possible schedule possible. I just don't see the teams that are going to bid bauer up to a 35 AAV. I think he's better than his career numbers(which are still pretty good), but I don't think he's Gerrit Cole either. I'm intrigued at where his number will go. There could be a team that goes 5 years and north of 30 AAV, but it would shock me if he had to take 3 or 4 years to get the AAV he wants.

As you said, he’s prob not worth it but agent doing their job by trying to push up the highest aav. See it a lot in football where Guy B gets highest contract even though Guy A who signed last year or two was better. Seems all the top FA are holding out for more dollars and years. Someone will break obviously at some point. Bauer will prob have to settle for a little less IMO. We’ll see

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Word is Springer wants $150m. Figured that’d be his goal. Hopefully Mets don’t want to go 6th year. That’s Jays best shot. Not a fan of the 6th year but that’s what it’ll prob take

Not a fan of the 6th year but that’s what it’ll prob take Report: Springer seeking contract worth over $150M https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2081016 Article says he's looking for "well over 150 million." I was going to assume that a 6/150 deal would get it done and that both teams are probably closer to the 5/125 mill area. If he wants more than 6/150, I don't see us doing it at all.

EZe Verified Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 There’s a reason Padres chose to give up prospects on the trade market. All 3 of the top FA options give me some form of reservation on a long term deal but I guess that’s almost always the case in FA.

Springer wants more but prob 6/150 gets it done in the end This was a good point by Steve Adams of MLBTR... In all likelihood, a $150MM+ contract would make Springer the top paid position player of the winter — possibly the top paid free agent overall. Such a contract could take multiple shapes; clubs more concerned about maintaining year-over-year flexibility could opt for a six-year pact in the $25MM-per-year range, or a team less concerned about approaching the luxury threshold could up the annual rate to around $30MM per year on a five-year term. Given the Blue Jays’ affordable young core, they seem less likely to be concerned with the luxury barrier than the Mets, who have several expensive stars already scattered about the roster.
