jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Has Bryant gone downhill that fast? I was reading an article that proposed the Cubs trade him to the Jays for Kirk + a low tier prospect. Their fans laughed, and that it wasn't even close to realistic because it would be terrible for Toronto. I know he had a tough year, but damn. Maybe I'm just not as high on Kirk as some also

I still think that's nuts... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/11/2020-non-tender-candidates.html
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Jon Gray surprises me as a name on that list, Pham too.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Jim Callis and company think we'll be protecting these 6 guys and adding them to 40. That would mean we drop Valera or Fisher, likely the former... Toronto Blue Jays: 8) Gabriel Moreno, C 13) Otto Lopez, SS/2B 19) Kevin Smith, SS/3B 22) Riley Adams, C 26) Josh Winckowski, RHP 30) Chavez Young, OF What do you guys think of that list... or would change?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 If Bryant is a legit non tender candidate for the Cubs (I don't think he is), then trading for him makes a lot of sense. I'm sure the Cubs can get some value in a trade for him, so a non tender doesn't make much sense, but hard to say with the Covid environment whether a ~$20m rental 3B is going to be in high demand. If the Jays are seriously after Lindor, then I wonder if they'd have interest in Baez. Not a fan of Baez's BB/K rate, but he's clearly a legit SS and likely more extendable than Lindor is.

All signs point to some major cost cutting on the North side. I think we'll be surprised by who is available on some teams.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Riley Adams? For who Baez?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 For who Baez? Bryant but that has to be a pipe dream. But who knows
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Is Jeffrey Loria trying to buy the Cubs or something? If Bryant is seriously on the chopping block and the ask is as low as people are suggesting, the Jays should be prepared to be aggressive and be the winner. The team has the depth to afford a slight overpay in prospect capital. I think he would absolutely rake here. Though he doesn't help much with the team's mediocre defense.

He had 34 bad games coming off a 4.8 win season, lol.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 I would sign him but I heard he's a registered sex offender in the state of Florida so he has to reside there. He can get a waiver to travel for a limited number of away games (that's why he only wants to pitch for half the season) but otherwise that means he has to play for the Rays or Marlins. Come on you guys. This post was pretty funny and not even 1 like. ********.

Valera isn't on the roster. They'd only have to cut one guy from the 40-man to add those 6. IMO it should be Waguespack or Yamaguchi.

Here's the thing, I really don't think Bryant would cost that much in prospect capital either. I don't think we'd have to give up any of our Top 5 prospects to land him. He's projected to make $21M in arbitration. With the Cubs aggressively trying to cut payroll, it makes sense to trade him now, and not a lot of contenders have the need for a 3B. I would be all in on Bryant though. He's been quietly forgotten since his MVP season even though he's been a great hitter. Obviously, I would prefer trading for Lindor and extending him, but in the event that can't get done, it makes complete sense to get a guy like Bryan. Fill the 3B gap for a year while Groshans/Martin develop. Bryant can also play the occasional corner OF if needed. What would he realistically cost? I legitimately think you could get it done with a package of Riley Adams, Miguel Hiraldo, and another flier. Adams apparently was impressive in the alternate site and should be a MLB ready catcher next season (also Rule 5 eligible), Hiraldo is a Top 10 advanced, young bat with upside, and maybe you can throw in another flier pitcher in there. Would do that in a heartbeat. Edited November 19, 2020 by Ray

We have Bo, Cavan, Martin, Groshans, and Martinez ahead of him. You might have a hard time fitting him on the 40 man in 2 years and lose him for nothing. Even if you get him on the 40. Who is he replacing on the active roster in a couple years? He could play really well and jump other prospects over the next 2 years. You come to these points and you have to make evaluations. Sometimes you are wrong. There isn't room on the active roster for Martin, Groshans, Martinez and Hiraldo when you have Bo and Cavan ahead of them. If you think Bryant is capable of bouncing back being a 5 win player in one year. That's more valuable to me than a guy who might be a 8 to 10 win player over 6 years when we are going to have a hard time finding a place on the 40 in 2 years. If I can get Bryant and the center piece Hiraldo, giddy up! I do that deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

They could just sign Justin Turner. They could trade Hiraldo (or anyone else they deem expendable) for someone who has more objective trade value and maybe more team control than Bryant
