They’ll gamble that they can upgrade on him for less money in what will be a weird offseason.

There are some teams with an insane amount of players on the 40 man plus 45 day. I think the Marlins were at 50, SD 46, Astros 47, Cards 45. I have not looked closely at who are FA's or if they have a lot of crap they can DFA, but I feel like there will be some teams out of the FA market

Another thing worth exploring is extensions for some of our younger guys. I'm not sure if Bichette/Biggio/Vladdy would sign one this offseason, but exploring ones Jansen & Teoscar make sense. Teoscar especially since he is arbitration eligible.

We have $53M committed to salaries next season. I could see the following moves occurring:

- Dolis' option exercised @ $1.5M (what a steal)

- Anderson's option declined @ $9.5M

- Travis Shaw signed @ $4.5M in his final year of arb

- Teoscar Hernandez signed @ $3.5M for his first year of arb

- Ross Stripling signed @ $2.3M in arb

- AJ Cole signed @ $1.5M in arb

- Brandon Drury non-tendered

- Wilmer Font non-tendered

Realistically, you're looking at ~$13M added between players with options and arbitration salaries which would put us at $66M. That could give us upwards of $50M to spend just to get to the payroll we had this year, and I would expect a small increase. But even if there isn't, seems like there's plenty of money to spend.

Jays are in a great position to be world series contenders by 2022. Just hope we take a big step next year and this offseason will go a long ways in determining that.

Anderson auto-decline. And we can't be serious with Roark/Yamaguchi. Just cut them. Shaw gone too, thx.

If there's a minor league season, half our bullpen should probably be starting games in the minors.

Sign 10 pitchers. And Gregorius.

I'm pretty intrigued by Gregorious as well. Could shift between 3B and SS if needed, complements this lineup well with handedness and batted-ball profile, great defensively, proven AL East bat. Shouldn't be all that expensive either. Probably looking at 3-4 years at $13M AAV in this depressed market?

I think our front office may have had interest in him this past offseason too.

Why the hell would the Jays want to go after Gregorius when superior players including Andrelton Simmons (best defensive SS of this era??) and Marcus Semien are also available as free agents?! Hell, let's just bring Jeter out of retirement - that should solve the problem !!

ETA : Gregorius was the master of hitting s*** HRs into the short porch in new Yankee Stadium. He is a decent player but not good.

Reading between the lines, it sounded like Simmons rejected a trade to the Jays at the deadline. That's just my own speculation, however.

I'm not all that keen on paying a premium for a shortstop when we don't need one. Players like Justin Turner, DJ LeMahieu, and Tommy La Stella are more appealing. A great short term bat at 3B with playoff experience is a nice fit for us.

Turner is perfect. He's likely going to get a 2 year deal plus an option. I don't see any scenario in which the Dodgers don't resign him and I assume the same for Lemahieu and the Yankees. La Stella is interesting, but he might want more years than I would be willing to commit.

We need to build up our SP infrastructure MLB and minors as our #1 priority. SP wise, we do not have a great system compared to the Rays, SD, Diamondbacks, Miami, Cleveland, even Pittsburg IMO who have a lot of solid young pitchers still on the way. Apart from SWR, Manoah and maybe Kloffstien (far off) nothing too salivating at this point who isn't recovering from TJ.

Do some of those SP deals with the Pirates and others move some of our positional assets... Our pen was beset by injuries, but also exposed after a huge amount of innings since our SPs weren't going very long, by design or being s*****, it really wore down and exposed our pen in many games.

Sell while the iron is hot on some of our position prospects... Vlad was supposed to be can't miss. Look at his value now compared to AAA. It will be a tough decision, but we will have a log jam eventually at some positions and we need more young and solid SPs!!

This is absolutely correct and people probably need to cool their jets.

The 2020 team was handed a playoff spot but this team isn't one or two FA/trade acquisitions away from being a slam-dunk actual playoff team (unless they have an incredibly lucky year with health in 2021...)

Even during this short season the wheels fell off a lot of the young arms:

Borucki had a bad second half.

Kay did too.

Hatch had a sneaky mediocre year in the bullpen.

Pearson did not look dominant and got hurt.

Romano got hurt.

Merryweather couldn't stay healthy.

Thornton got hurt.

Pitching prospects will break your heart. People like to think about MLB pitching in terms of plugging 26 man roster holes, but the correct way to think about it tends to be as a system or pipeline. Toronto needs to keep building so that they are the team that has a surplus of arms and can sell a guy like Ross Stripling for younger assets during his 6 years of team control. Or, so they are the team with so much SP depth that they don't have to mess around with guys like Merryweather and Murphy as SP and can just let them succeed in the pen.

I don’t think you know what ETA means.

Also, park factors are a thing.

The Jays need to improve defensively next season. They were the second worst defensive OF by OAA, fifth worst defensive infield and second worst total defense by the same metric.

So what is the solution for fixing OF defense? Teo to DH? Can't really do that with Vlad on the roster.... Gurriel looks good out in LF so i'd keep him there. Grichuk probably isn't going anywhere with his contract.

Trade Teo while he's valuable? Trading Teo and moving Grichuk to RF would make the OF a lot stronger. Try to trade Grich? Not sure he's very valuable. IDK what you would do to fix the OF

EDIT: As for the infield, I think moving Bo to 3B and signing a legit defender up the middle would make a huge difference. Also Vlad should be DH half the time. Or maybe he can improve his defense this offseason.

They are horrendous defensively.

SS - Bo is probably below average with a chance to be average (small sample)

2B - Biggio may be average or slightly better than average (small sample)

3B - Shaw sucks now. Biggio may not be an average 3B either.

1B - Vlad is awful.

CF - Grichuk's metrics wary wildly. Some think he is good some think he sucks.

RF - below average

LF - below average

C - Jansen is good

There are a few positives though:

1) the major prospects on the way will probably (hopefully?) be defensive assets (Groshans and Martin)

2) defensive is one of the things that can improve with age, of course. Young teams/players can get significantly better with work.

3) a few players could move down the spectrum and likely be good defenders. Ex., say a plus SS replaces Bo. That could bump Bo to 2B where he should be plus, Biggio to an OF corner where he should be plus. Similarly a true CF could move Grichuk back to a corner improving two positions.

oddly enough in a shortened season Teoscar graded out as an average right fielder. His arm really is a weapon that balances out some of his other deficiencies.

Jackie Bradley Jr. is someone that would instantly improve this outfield defense. Play him in CF, shift Grichuk to RF where his defense will play up, and play Teoscar only when you have to. Gurriel was an adventure, but you’re hoping he improves his routes with more experience now. The raw skills are there.

This team is absolutely built for Bauer. Lots of near-term budget space until the young guys hit arb. Perfect for a one-year overpay. Him plus Ryu plus Pearson assuming an optimistic development path plus the offense plus your pick of about 15 guys to fill out the pen is a pretty legit contender in 2019 format playoffs.

Will they let him have 42 to 45 starts? That is what it comes down to

Ryu likes extra days of Rest and Pearson doesn't have a lot of innings behind him. The Jays are actually ideally built to bring in a Bauer and give him extra starts. That would be a complete deviation from their ultra cautious mentality though.

I would on a 1Year deal.

If it were up to me, I'd rotate Gurriel/Teoscar at DH so they are not in the field together, shift Grichuk to LF and sign Jackie Bradley Jr. to be the everyday CF. In the infield I would look to target Simmons or Semien to play SS, move Bo to 3B and have Cavan stay at 2B. I would fully commit to Vlad at 1B and trade Tellez for whatever I can get for him.

I don't think you know your ass from a hole in the ground. In this context ETA, means editted to add, (not estimated time of arrival, if that is what you are thinking). Other than that I can't help your feeble mind.....

If hes on a short term contract then I dont see any issues, pitch until your arm falls off lol

I'd rather trade Grichuk and keep Rowdy. Rowdy is just scratching the surface and he's cheap. His walk rate ticked up, his strike out rate went down huge. He only had a .276 Babip and he's an above average 1st baseman defensively. What if Vlad just isn't a good defender. I'd rotate the 2 through the Dh and first base position.

could they do 1 million per game pitched (minimum 4 innings) for 3 years. Seems that would be doable under the current rules...

This makes your defense worse not better because now you have two below average corner outfielders and no CF.

it's okay to admit you don't know what ETA stands for. No one is judging.

WTF is your problem?!

so enlighten me Mr. Einstein, what does 'ETA' mean?
