I think it's pretty widely accepted that for hitting prospects that you care about their first AB should come in a start or at least in a competitive spot. If Kirk comes up down 17-1 and gets his first major league hit the accomplishment is diminished and it won't be celebrated as much since the team is getting their ass whooped and both teams just want to leave.

Was fun to watch him last night. Butchered frame on a couple pitches and that Dolis wild pitch was a poor block. Overall though he looked good at the plate and behind it. Media going bezerk. Need to remember JPA hit 2 HRS in his first MLB I think. Before we declare Kirk to be the next Pudge let’s see some more.

Kirk will be my science experiment. We have (at least) two obese players on the team now. One is a trust fund baby who's career success will have little to no impact on his quality of life. The other (presumably) doesn't.

 

Will the one who comes from nothing have the internal drive to improve his habits and transform his body as required to get the absolute out of his career? Will the trust fund baby fail to reach his potential? Or will their families financial situation play little to no part in all of this.

 

Time will tell.

Kirk was smart to make himself into a catcher so he can be a fatty all he wants. Vlad jr wanted to play 3b but couldn't keep his weight in check for even a year into his major league career.
